Chapter 6
“Isn’t he a hundred times more handsome than Qi Sihao?”
Yan Ming’s face was flawless; even Ren Yali could find no argument against it. Yet, she remained undeterred: “Even if he is handsome, can he possibly compare to Qi Sihao? He possesses a healer’s heart, not only stunning looks but also remarkable intelligence! Moreover, he has a true passion for saving lives!”
“My brother is also a medical student! He is Qi Sihao’s esteemed senior and a genius, having been admitted to medical school at just sixteen!”
As she extolled the virtues of Yan Ming, Yu Tian became increasingly animated: “That little intelligence of Qi Sihao’s is nothing next to my brother! Qi Sihao only graduated with a bachelor’s degree at twenty-three and is just beginning his internship at the First Affiliated Hospital; my brother, at twenty-eight, is already an attending physician there! Though he is young, he can perform intricate and complex ocular surgeries with remarkable skill. His future is boundless!”
Yu Tian was beaming with pride and casually mentioned “my brother,” for having Yan Ming as her brother was a coveted wish of hers.
She turned to Ren Yali, pressing on: “Let me ask you one thing: if you truly needed medical attention, would you dare to ask Qi Sihao for a prescription?”
“…”
“And even if you and Qi Sihao ended up together, if a man like my brother were to pursue you at that time, do you really believe you could remain faithful?”
“…”
Yu Tian concluded emphatically: “Once you’ve tasted the ocean, mere water will no longer suffice. Had I ever encountered a man like my brother, I most certainly would never settle for someone as mediocre as Qi Sihao!”
Her words left Ren Yali momentarily speechless, yet she remained distraught, tears streaming down her face once more.
“Stop crying,” urged Yu Tian, feeling a thrum of exasperation. She patted Ren Yali, “If nothing else, dating my brother is far superior to being with Qi Sihao!”
Ren Yali choked out, “Is that truly the case?”
In a bid to pacify Ren Yali and prevent any rash decisions, Yu Tian set aside other matters.
She blinked innocently: “Of course. If it were within my power, I would gladly promise you my brother on the spot! After all, a man like him is the epitome of quality! You’re still so young and naïve! Take my advice: good men are in abundance like chives; get out there and experience the world…”
Yu Tian’s attempt at comfort was initially made out of a sense of desperation, considering Ren Yali’s declaration that she could only marry Qi Sihao.
However, to her surprise, no sooner had she finished speaking than Ren Yali ceased her tears and fixed her gaze on Yu Tian: “Really? Then you must send me your brother’s WeChat immediately!”
“…”
Ren Yali feigned innocence: “Isn’t your brother an attending physician? Just add him on WeChat; besides, it would be convenient for future medical consultations!”
“…”
Eventually, after much negotiation, Ren Yali temporarily relinquished her potentially perilous desire for Yan Ming’s WeChat.
Just when Yu Tian had successfully calmed Ren Yali and coerced her to call a friend, Yan Ming returned, carrying popcorn.
The perfect timing lifted a weight off Yu Tian’s shoulders.
She graciously accepted the popcorn and said, “Thank you, Senior Yan Ming.”
Looking at her phone, Yu Tian mused, “There’s still time before the movie starts. Shall we enjoy our popcorn on the sofa?”
Yan Ming glanced at Yu Tian, pressing his lips together to gently decline her suggestion: “No, I have something significant to attend to.”
Yu Tian, intrigued, tilted her head: “What could possibly be so urgent?”
No sooner had she spoken than Yan Ming dispassionately replied, “Perhaps it is to get married.”
??
!!!
Isn’t Yan Ming single? And now he’s talking about marriage?!
Yu Tian’s eyes glimmered with curiosity: “Are you secretly dating someone behind Uncle Yan’s back? Is it that he disapproves of your relationship?”
In an instant, Yu Tian conjured a melodramatic scenario of star-crossed lovers being thwarted, yet persistently striving to affirm their love against the odds.
However, before she could script the rest of her narrative, Yan Ming’s unflinching voice pierced through:
“Wasn’t it you who just decided to give me away to someone else?”
“…”
The smile on Yu Tian’s face gradually froze, its expression cracking.
Even while seated inside the cinema, Yu Tian still felt heated.
Despite being someone who usually reveled in jest, mercilessly mocking Qi Sihao in the past, when faced with Yan Ming, it seemed as though her usual wit had been silenced.
She was entirely unaware of when Yan Ming had returned or what he had overheard, feeling a great embarrassment building within her.
Even during a stark legal awareness examination, when confronted with entirely confusing legal queries, Yu Tian had managed to scramble and string together several hundred words in a desperate attempt to earn sympathy. Yet, as soon as Yan Ming spoke, she completely lost her will to engage; the enemy had yet to unveil its weapon, and she had already surrendered…
In the end, she uttered not a single word.
Like a novice diver whose oxygen tank malfunctioned, her face flushed, bursting with signals of suffocation and entreaty for help.
Fortunately, Yan Ming did not probe further into Yu Tian’s casual proposal of matchmaking.
Before long, the movie they were waiting for commenced ticket collection.
Yu Tian feigned nonchalance, confidently being the first to enter the auditorium.
Once the lights dimmed and the film officially began, she felt rejuvenated by the shadows surrounding her.
She likened herself to a moonflower, eluding the sun’s glare until the night descended, finally daring to unfurl her leaves in the moonlight, allowing herself to breathe and bloom.
Yet she remained cautious.
But Yan Ming sat far too close, his arm resting lightly on the armrest beside her. As she attempted to reposition the popcorn, her hand inadvertently brushed against his arm.
She dared not move excessively.
After all, he was her idol!
Amidst her uncontrollable emotions, Yu Tian found herself utterly oblivious to the film unfolding before her eyes.
The cinema seats were exceptionally soft and comfortable, their ergonomic design continually tempting Yu Tian to lean in. She summoned immense willpower merely to sit upright.
After all, she wanted to create a good impression on Yan Ming.
Yet it seemed that the more she strained to maintain her composure, the more elusive it became.
Yu Tian desperately sought to remain poised and quiet, but every position felt uncomfortable, prompting her to shuffle and change her posture repeatedly.
By contrast, Yan Ming appeared entirely at ease.
Since he had settled into his seat, he hadn’t shifted even slightly.
That must be what they mean by sitting like a pine tree.
Truly, he embodied the essence of steadiness!
A flickering illumination from the screen allowed Yu Tian to discreetly scrutinize the contours of the man beside her.
His long fingers rested gracefully on the armrest, each digit as elegant as he himself was; his fair skin gleamed in the theater’s dim light.
Yu Tian’s gaze lingered on Yan Ming’s fingertips, slowly traveling upwards.
She noticed his adam’s apple rising and falling in a smooth, sensual arc along his neck, complemented by a sharply defined jawline.
To be candid, Yan Ming possessed a beauty that seemed ethereal, and Yu Tian believed that what lingered most in her memory were his striking eyes.
They held a tenderness yet appeared empty, as if emanating warmth to all, yet retaining an air of indifferent detachment.
In that moment, Yan Ming seemed to epitomize perfection.
Beautiful, powerful, graceful, interlaced with coolness and nobility.
He resembled the luminous silver moon on a snowy night—far from reach yet comforting in its presence, invigorating the wanderers to brave the cold winds and snow in pursuit of its glow.
Yu Tian’s heart began to thump heavily.
A mingling of excitement, nervousness, and indescribable complexity stirred within her, akin to a girl finally encountering her idol.
As she carefully curbed her gaze, even in the shadows, Yan Ming remained oblivious to her attention, yet Yu Tian trembled with trepidation, her lashes fluttering like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon.
Finally, just as she was about to muster the courage to meet his eyes, she found that those captivating eyes had shut, resembling an exhibition of exquisite artifacts that had unexpectedly closed its doors.
Illuminated by the sudden brightness of the screen, Yu Tian soon realized that Yan Ming’s stillness was not due to a composed posture, but rather — he had fallen asleep.
His eyes were closed, lashes casting shadows; resting against the seat back, his lips gently pressed together, exuding an air of calm vulnerability that dulled his extraordinary aura, making Yu Tian feel as though the moon had come to her, granting her all incorrect illusions.
Amidst the film’s poignant farewell scene, many women in the audience found it hard to stifle sobs.
Yet even in the midst of such sounds, Yan Ming remained peacefully aloof from the world.
With an unguarded fragility and weariness.
In all the tales she had heard of the medical students, Yan Ming appeared as a distant, deified figure, yet in this moment, he was simply an ordinary person who had worked the night shift and felt fatigued.
Suddenly, Yu Tian felt she was drawing nearer to Yan Ming.
Rather than feeling upset that he had fallen asleep during their movie, she instead felt an unusual sense of responsibility—she felt like a guardian keeping watch over him in his slumber.
If he rested well, he would tackle the day with renewed vigor, capable of saving even more lives.
In turn, even Yu Tian began to perceive this otherwise mundane film as something sacred.
She genuinely did not wish to disturb Yan Ming’s peaceful sleep.
Yan Ming awakened ten minutes before the film ended.
Through her periphery, Yu Tian observed as his eyes transitioned from drowsy confusion to lucidity, ultimately settling into a composed indifference, mixed with a trace of self-satisfied belief that he was unnoticed.
He maintained a solemn demeanor as if the person who had just been asleep was not truly himself.
Yu Tian decided to play along, pretending to remain unaware, choosing not to expose his little secret.
As they exited the theater, Yan Ming glanced at the time before looking at Yu Tian: “Where do you live? Let me give you a ride home.”
Yu Tian rapidly waved her hands: “No, no, it’s alright! You’ve already wasted too much of your time; my home is not far, and the subway is quite convenient.”
Yan Ming frowned slightly but remained insistent: “I will drive you.”
Yu Tian understood well that he likely felt compelled to extend such courtesy under Yan Wenhua’s influence; thus, even though he didn’t need to be overly attentive, he still aimed to meet certain expectations.
Yet, Yu Tian sincerely did not want him to drive her: “I’m not just being polite; I truly don’t need it!”
Yan Ming shot her a sideways glance: “Are you feeling embarrassed now?”
