Please Don’t Give Up On Treatment

Chapter 13

Fortunately, the festive atmosphere of the anniversary celebration and the jubilant decorations around the campus helped to ease some of Yu Tian’s melancholy.

As she walked toward the outdoor venue, she listened to Qi Sihao gossiping animatedly beside her.

The sun shone brightly that day, and Rong Medical University had recently constructed a vast outdoor space. Besides hosting large-scale events and sports competitions, it had also been rented for smaller performances in the past.

Now, the soothing sounds of music drifted through the air as a crowd gathered. Numerous well-known alumni, who had previously only appeared on the school’s honor roll or promotional banners, mingled with eager students seeking advice on career choices or academic directions.

Yu Tian quickly spotted Yan Ming.

He was surrounded by admirers, a star consumed by the attention of his junior peers.

With his unforgettable visage and tall stature, Yan Ming stood at the center of the throng. As a physician, he was accustomed to being surrounded, yet his brow furrowed slightly, suggesting he was still unaccustomed to being surrounded by students who were not patients. Nevertheless, he patiently answered the questions from those around him.

At that moment, Qi Sihao was called away by a junior, leaving Yu Tian alone.

She couldn’t find an opportunity to greet Yan Ming, not only because he was busy but also because, soon enough, she became preoccupied herself.

Despite ranking among the top students in her class every year, she felt overshadowed compared to someone of Yan Ming’s caliber.

Yu Tian was self-aware; people sought her out not for her academic achievements or professional contributions but purely for her striking looks.

Her features were vivid and sharp, with an unforgettable allure.

“What year are you from? I think I’ve seen you in the library before.”

“I work in the emergency department of a top-tier hospital. If you ever come by, look for me, and I’d be happy to show you around. Want to add me on WeChat?”

“We’re just getting settled; I have a seat card up front with an empty spot beside me. Would you like to sit with me?”

Yu Tian engaged politely yet briefly with each individual who attempted to strike up a conversation, subtly steering the discussion toward a rejection.

“I can’t chat too long; I’m looking for my boyfriend.”

She used the same excuse to gently decline several offers. But when she looked up again, she realized that Yan Ming was no longer in his previous spot.

Had he left?

Where could he have gone? Was he preparing to go on stage?

As disappointment crept in, a gentle tap on her shoulder startled her.

Initially thinking it might be Yan Ming or Qi Sihao, she turned eagerly, the smile frozen on her lips, only to find Zheng Tingfu.

After several months apart, he looked vibrant, no longer wearing a doctor’s white coat but dressed in a tailored suit, resembling more of a financial elite than a physician.

With his tender yet pained eyes, he gazed at Yu Tian, “Little Fish…”

Her face seemed to draw him in, his gaze lingering on her before dropping to her injured hand. “Your hand…”

His expression revealed deep anguish, as though he were the injured one rather than Yu Tian.

“Did you know I was coming? I heard you saying you were looking for your boyfriend…”

Yu Tian had always seen Zheng Tingfu as gentle and harmless, but at that moment, he struck her as indecisive and overly sentimental.

Yu Tian reined in her smile, responding politely yet distantly, “Senior.”

It seemed he was trying to grasp Yu Tian’s hand.

Fortunately, she anticipated this and stepped back slightly.

His hand found only air.

Awkwardly, he looked at her with a pleading expression, like a reluctant victim.

“Little Fish, what happened was my fault. I felt so guilty that I didn’t think I could face you. During your time in the hospital, I didn’t dare to visit.”

Zheng Tingfu appeared genuinely tortured. “I never contemplated something like this happening. I didn’t foresee an aggressive patient wielding a knife and injuring you.”

With a gaze full of emotion, he continued, “You knew I was coming, didn’t you? I heard you say you were searching for your boyfriend, so doesn’t that mean you’ve actually forgiven me and were looking for me…?”

Before he could finish, a girl’s voice suddenly interrupted.

“Tingfu!”

The newcomer was petite, with average features, yet a haughty expression filled with hostility as she looked at Yu Tian.

She linked her arm possessively with Zheng Tingfu’s, tilting her chin to glance at Yu Tian before looking back at him. “Tingfu, since it’s such a coincidence, should you say what you need to say to her now?”

Her sharp tone transformed the atmosphere into something akin to a melodramatic soap opera, causing a few nearby to glance over with curiosity.

In Zheng Tingfu’s eyes, an unmistakable reluctance flickered, but he seemed to resolve himself.

“Yu Tian, I’m sorry, but I believe we’re incompatible. It would be best for us to part ways and find our own peace. By saying this, I want to clarify not only for you but also for myself, and to take responsibility for Zhao Xinxin.”

He cast a glance at the girl beside him, adopting a protective posture. “But please don’t blame Xinxin; she’s not the third party. Honestly, we haven’t been in contact for months, and you likely know our relationship has been little more than a formality for a long time.”

“Since we have this chance to meet, I thought it important to clarify this relationship and allow Xinxin to start anew without any psychological burdens.”

Yu Tian listened calmly, an incredible sense of disbelief and absurdity welling within her.

She didn’t attempt to interject or argue; she felt at a loss as to how much more ridiculous the situation might become.

Zheng Tingfu clearly struggled internally with his words; he couldn’t even meet Yu Tian’s gaze as he spoke, instead staring at the ground. “Regarding your hand, although it’s not my responsibility, and I know you’ve pursued legal action against the assailant, I feel compelled to offer some financial assistance, hoping you can have a better life…”

After the incident, Yu Tian had never harbored resentment towards Zheng Tingfu.

Even though that day, when she had gone to the hospital he insisted she visit, was under his strong persuasion.

Even though it had occurred in the pediatric consultation room he was overseeing.

Even after the crazed individual had burst in with a knife, Zheng Tingfu had abandoned her, leaving her waiting in the consult room while he fled.

Even after she lay in the ICU, uncertain whether her hand would recover post-surgery, Zheng Tingfu hadn’t even bothered to check on her…

Yet Yu Tian had never sought to attribute her injury to him.

But now, she had never disliked him more.

She had never found the situation more ludicrous.

It was precisely because of a person like him that her hand had been injured, effectively rendering her unable to become a skilled surgical doctor. It was entirely possible that her once-graceful right hand would never again perform delicate tasks.

Such irony.

A cold smirk rose within Yu Tian.

She surveyed the surroundings; although people bustled about, most were engaged in conversations with their classmates or acquaintances, ignoring the unfolding drama.

She neither argued with Zheng Tingfu nor confronted him.

Her voice trembled with restrained emotion, her beautiful dark eyes fixed on Zheng Tingfu as her tone softened, becoming almost gentle, like a benign creature: “Senior, didn’t you say you would always love only me in this lifetime? Why is it, now that my hand is injured, you’re ready to abandon me? If I’ve lost my hand, how could I manage without you?”

Zheng Tingfu visibly wavered; his expression shifted to one of panic and awkwardness. The arm linked with Zhao Xinxin began to loosen as he instinctively took two steps toward Yu Tian.

He genuinely had feelings for her, having pursued her for three years, but she had only reciprocated with kindness and no intention of evolving their relationship further.

Things began to change when he rotated into pediatrics at the hospital.

Yu Tian had grown curious about the rotation, slowly becoming more interested in the subjects he discussed.

Finally, Zheng Tingfu successfully persuaded her to consider moving from mere friendship to exploring something deeper.

Without a doubt, Yu Tian was strikingly beautiful and intelligent.

Had circumstances been different, Zheng Tingfu would have chosen her in an instant had she pleaded with him like this.

After all, her hand didn’t seem severely damaged; she could still manage daily functions, only unable to pursue surgery. That would suffice—having one doctor in the family was enough. He could focus on his career while she managed home life, freeing him from worries.

But fate intervened when he met Zhao Xinxin, who, despite being average in appearance, came from an affluent background; her father was a mid-level official in the Rong City Health Bureau.

The day of the incident, when Zheng Tingfu abandoned a young patient, it didn’t break any laws, but it had severely dented his reputation within the hospital he’d joined, tarnishing his relationships. This would likely hinder his opportunities for advancement. Yet, thanks to Zhao Xinxin’s connections, he had secured a transfer to a better department at the affiliated First Hospital.

The transfer notice would arrive in about a week.

Yu Tian could see the conflict etched on his face, so she called out softly, “Senior.”

Zheng Tingfu’s hesitation became even more pronounced, making Zhao Xinxin’s indignation palpable.

“Tingfu! You are my boyfriend! Not hers! What could she possibly do with such an injury? What help could she provide you?!”

The brewing argument between Zheng Tingfu and Zhao Xinxin finally attracted attention, drawing curious glances from passersby eager to know what was happening.

Yu Tian felt her aim had been accomplished.

She smiled lightly, her gaze locking onto Zheng Tingfu as she slowly said, “Boyfriend?”

Zheng Tingfu was trapped in his internal struggle, clearly torn between the two sides. One hand held Zhao Xinxin, while his eyes remained fixed on Yu Tian. “Little Fish… I do have feelings for you… but…”

He was certainly trying to have his cake and eat it too.

Yu Tian shed all pretense, her expression hardening as she articulated each word: “Unfortunately, I have no feelings for you.”

“Never have.”

“I never considered you a boyfriend.”

“Our relationship has always been you relentlessly pursuing me, while I merely agreed to explore being friends—not a romantic relationship.”

“Don’t you find it utterly absurd to stand before me and solemnly announce our breakup as you seek out someone new? It’s like declaring divorce without ever having been married.”

The corners of Yu Tian’s mouth lifted in a smirk, imbued with mockery: “Zheng Tingfu, in modern society, breaking up is a personal choice; however, when exactly were we ever together? I can’t recall!”

“What do you think you are to me? Who do you think you are?”

Ignoring the deep flush that spread across Zheng Tingfu’s face, Yu Tian turned to Zhao Xinxin, whose expression mirrored her own discontent, unabashedly stating, “Miss Zhao Xinxin, you needn’t worry. I won’t vie for this useless Zheng Tingfu. If you wish to turn trash into treasure, feel free to take him.”

Yu Tian raised her hand, “He brings nothing but bad luck. I only agreed to visit his department once to learn about pediatric work conditions, and I ended up in this situation. If you choose to be with him, you had better hope your destiny is strong enough.”

“However, if Zheng Tingfu values you so much, he must have many admirable qualities. For example, he must be quite fit; otherwise, why would he have fled like a sprinting champion when faced with a belligerent person, leaving someone like me—who lacks physical prowess—to withstand several knife wounds?”

This was the most liberated Yu Tian had felt since her injury, her lips unleashing a torrent of biting words, the built-up desire for revenge and anger threatening to overflow.

But then, as she lifted her gaze, she met a pair of eyes resting on her.

Yan Ming’s eyes.

He looked across the throng of people and the cacophony of voices, his gaze both serene and profound as it settled on Yu Tian.

The vibrant confidence Yu Tian had displayed moments earlier in confronting Zheng Tingfu and Zhao Xinxin began to fade under his scrutiny, as if the air had been let out of an overinflated balloon.
