Chapter 2: Chapter Two - The Evans Family
The Evans family was a lower-middle-class family, they had a modest three-bedroom house with a small garden but the house, although beautiful, was near Wiring Street, a place where poor families lived, they ate meat once a week and had a TV schedule.
Robert was a supervisor in a factory near London and Margaret was a housewife, the two had two daughters Petunia and Lily, both intelligent and beautiful girls, from afar it seemed a perfect family but for Petunia well they were somewhat unnatural parents.
Lily was kind, intelligent, and pretty, it was always said how beautiful she was, and whenever they said that Mrs. Evans had a beautiful daughter, it was Lily they looked at, while Petunia had a long neck and clumsy limbs and was average looking, Lili had beauty, intelligence and was her parents' favorite. She still had magic. Any child would envy Lili if they had her as a sister.
Petunia herself, who is almost fifty years old, is mentally a little envious because she doesn't have magic, but as a child, she would be so envious that it would turn to hatred, and the blatant favoritism didn't help, but she was grateful for the latter, because the less time she had to interact as their daughter, the better.
The relationship between the three of them was confusing, they ignored her in favor of Lily (she didn't complain) but they fed and clothed her, she had a roof over her head and a stable life, Petunia didn't hate them, but she would never love them, and the only thing that united them was their blood and their love for Lily.
The only time Margaret and Petunia were together was when they were sewing. It was the end of July and the two of them were preparing the fabrics and making sketches of the clothes since it was much more economical for them to do it themselves.
It was just the two of them since Lili had a strong aversion to sewing, she was learning to mend, but making clothes from scratch?
'She must be with Snape,' She thought.
Her feelings for the boy were complicated since he came from an abusive home and Lily was his only friend, but she couldn't ignore the roots of his problems. He put Lily on a pedestal and knowing that Hogwarts was a boarding school, Lily would have access to other magical children and the boy would probably will be possessive of her in the worst case Snape would fall in love with her and if it wasn't reciprocated he might try something against Lili's will and...
- Petunia? What are you thinking? - Asked Margaret.
- What do you think of a bag combined with the leftover fabric?
Margaret agreed and they both turned their attention back to the sewing in their hands, Petunia knew she was being neurotic, but Snape had all the signs of a future toxic friend.
She would have to talk with the boy, but he didn't seem to like her interrupting his moments with Lily, he looked at her as if Petunia was going to take the girl away from him if he was already like that at the age of eight she didn't even want to be near him when the drama started.
Her daydreams were interrupted again when it started to rain, the two had to run around the house closing the windows and running to get the clothes from the drying rack.
Lily arrived a few minutes later, soaking wet, she was embarrassed when she realized that she would have to take part in 'sewing time'. After drying off and changing her clothes, she sat down and picked up the embroidery (which she had been procrastinating to finish since Christmas) and slowly started to do it.
The three of them remained there working to the noise of the rain and the music on the radio, peace reigned until Lily decided that she wanted to drink some hot chocolate, and afraid that something would happen, she went along, the rain had stopped, and the two sisters were singing the song on the radio.
Everything was peaceful.
Lily hadn't done anything strange and Margaret hadn't opened her mouth, however, the peace was interrupted by the little bell, Lily ran to answer it and as Petunia had her back to the living room she didn't see who had arrived, but from the noise of joy it must be something good, luckily Petunia had her hands empty otherwise she would have broken her mother's teapot.
In the living room, there was a woman wearing clothes that looked like they were from medieval times and with a pointed hat. She was a witch with a Hogwarts letter, Lily was only eight years old and very young, while Petunia had just turned eleven in January.
She was a witch.
Petunia was so shocked by the news that she didn't speak for the rest of the conversation, Lily was elated that her sister was a witch and Margaret was more worried about the money but seemed happy that Petunia would be away from home for practically the whole year.
After the professor left, Lily ran to see if she could find Severus, and she would get muddy, Petunia decided to wait to make new clothes since she intended to make them in the witch style.
She eventually found out that Margaret came from a German witch family and that she was an abortion, a child of magical parents but without magic, well Petunia could understand a little of her personality, she felt a little sorry for her since it must have been horrible to be born without magic belonging to a wizard family, she felt sorry for her? Yes, but would she like her? No.
Petunia saw the pros and cons of being a witch, she would have to study at a boarding school with hormonal teenagers, and she didn't even want to think about what they could get up to with magic.
But she would also be away from her parents, even though she was an adult, it was getting harder and harder to maintain the facade of an obedient daughter in front of both of them, it would be bad to be away from Lily, but she was still a child with rose-colored glasses on her face, and although she loved her, Petunia couldn't ignore how annoying she was, and sometimes she just wished she could be alone she missed her parents, siblings, and husband she missed her old life, and she wished she could be away from the Evans as it was distressing to have to pretend to be their daughter.
I can't get over the fact that there was favoritism in this family, and any child would envy Lily, imagine if it were you, the adult Petunia has no forgiveness, but I feel a lot of compassion for her in infancy.
