Chapter 12: Chapter 12 - Fifth Year
September.
Dear Petunia, how are you? Are the prefects in your year nice?
Know that I miss you a lot, I'm getting used to the job.
Most of the librarians are thirty years old and up. Know that the clothes you embroidered with runes were very useful.
The library has strong preservation spells and for some reason, cooling spells don't work, so the only alternative is to embroider runes on clothes.
It's a huge market here and they never have enough people since it's a tradition here, since it was too risky to replace the spells around muggles.
If you have a NEWT in runes, the job here is guaranteed. The grades in them are valid here too.
I sent you some fashion magazines so you can get a feel for the style here. I also got a book on runic embroidery and a book on spells about clothing. I read them and they have many spells used by magical seamstresses and they are usually passed down from master to apprentice.
I hope my notes are useful to you. Is this year's defense teacher bad?
I didn't tell you before, but I'm going to have another nephew. He'll be born in December. I really wish I could visit him, but I want to save up my time off for the summer.
Love, Aster.
Petunia was alone in her room. She had left dinner early, but she grabbed some sandwiches. Her friends were suspicious and Petunia would tell some parts of the truth, that she was corresponding with Aster and that maybe the two of them would start something when she graduated.
Knowing that she would have a job opportunity was good, she liked working with clothes and runes were one of her best subjects, Petunia knew that after the O.W.L.s the room would be very empty and that would allow the teacher to dedicate herself more to the students. The two had talked and if Petunia continued in her classes after the exams she would have access to the restricted section where there were much more advanced rune books.
Although they didn't see each other as much at school, Petunia missed his presence, the daily letters, and the meetings, now she only had the letters that were once daily, and now she only had one a week.
But Petunia didn't have much time to miss him since she was dedicating herself completely to her studies, she wanted to be able to study in every free moment but she knew very well how stressed and anxious she would be if she did that, she studied with Lily and Severus, not that they needed it but they liked having someone to guide them (especially in defense).
She took an hour of the day to knit or do anything that involved sewing.
Unfortunately, no matter how old you are or how much experience you have in tests and exams, there will always be a little anxiety. It was the beginning of the semester and there were already students going to the hospital wing because of stress.
She had to reassure Eloise many times as the girl would become hysterical. Pandora and Xenophilius began to officially date. He would sometimes join her study sessions and ask questions about herbology.
Eloise was very happy to have been invited to the Slug Club. She knew it was because of her family's preconceptions, but the girl was motivated to get a good job opportunity. She asked her parents to send her a dress, but by golly, it was hideous. It was a horrible shade of moss green, full of lace and frills, and it was shaped like a wedding cake. She wanted to make a good impression, but with that dress, it would be very difficult.
Luckily, Petunia had seen the atrocity of the dress, and she didn't even need to ask her friend to alter it. She took a notebook full of drawings and started asking her what she liked. She changed the volume of the dress, and there was so much fabric that it would be enough to make three long dresses (or five shorter ones).
She leafed through Petunia's drawing book and chose a different model. The dress was green and had puffy sleeves. It wasn't the kind of dress her mother would buy, but she fell in love with it.
Eloise felt bad that Petunia was altering the dress and decided to pay her. She doesn't refuse but decides that a galleon is too much for an altered dress that doesn't even have anything magical about it.
She takes the leftover fabric and they negotiate: in addition to the long dress, she will make another party dress and three short ones for two galleons. Eloise realized that Petunia simply wanted to have sewing supplies to relieve stress.
Besides the dress, Petunia helped her get ready. She took some makeup from a seventh-grade girl and Petunia applied it to her and arranged her hair in a beautiful braided bun. She invited Petunia to be her date, but she refused. Eloise didn't quite understand why she didn't want attention, but she didn't ask. Everyone has the right to keep their secrets.
Petunia didn't go home for the winter break with the excuse of studying. Lily wasn't upset. She had seen her sister focus on her studies and had seen other students get nervous about the exam, but Petunia didn't notice.
Lily began to wonder why Petunia didn't want to go home. In addition to studying with Severus, she ordered clothes for Eloise.
Since there were few Ravenclaws, Professor Flitwick invited her to have the conversation about choosing a career sooner. The office was normal (by wizarding standards). There were several dueling trophies and many books, as well as a tray with tea and cakes. He has a welcoming smile and invites her to sit down.
- "So Miss Evans, do you have any career schools in mind? Know that with your grades you could be either a healer or an auror."-
- "I have no intention of pursuing those careers because I don't think I have a calling for them. Besides, both require a NEWT in Transfiguration and I will drop that class no matter what my grades are."-
He asks about her possible careers and Petunia has a general idea of working with runic charms, but she will be open to other opportunities. The two spend a good time talking and he advises her to learn Latin because it will be useful in runes.
- "Charms, runes, herbology, potions, and defense are good. Do you not intend to continue with creature care?"-
- "I never really liked the subject. I only took it because I'm not very good at numbers and I refuse to do fortune telling and other studies. But depending on my grade, I might end up taking astrology. It's not that demanding a class and it might be useful to know how to map the stars correctly. Any other questions, teacher?"-
- "No, Miss Evans. You're one of the most well-rounded classes I've ever had the pleasure of speaking to. Most of them are so nervous that they don't even know what they want to do with their lives."-
Petunia thanked him for the conversation. The rest of her vacation was calm and peaceful.
