Chapter 10: Chapter 10 - Severus First Impressions
Ever since he learned about Hogwarts, Severus wanted to go there. In the few maternal moments Elia had, she would tell her son stories about her youth. He grew up knowing about the magical world and wanting to escape his life.
Lily was his first friend, and she was also a witch. At first, he didn't want to get involved with Petunia, but she treated him like a brother. At the time, he thought it was sad that Petunia was a Muggle and not a witch. Lily thought the same, but neither of them said that to Petunia. He had hoped that she would receive the letter, and it happened. Petunia was a witch like him.
The summer that followed was great. They went to Diagon Alley and spent a lot of time reading Petunia's schoolbooks while she sewed. Lily was sad when she realized that her sister would be away from her for a good part of the year.
He learned a lot about the wizarding world since Petunia sent him three letters a week and due to lack of content, she started giving him information about witch stories, the latest gossip, and rumors. She even sent him a copy of the Prophet from time to time and when she returned she gave him a magic pendant that allowed him to have security at home.
Severus thought that the wizarding world was perfect but when he paid attention he realized that people were similar no matter if they had magic or not.
Petunia had good manners. She knew how to behave in any type of environment and Lily was friendly and polite and he didn't understand any of that.
He realized that if he wanted to have a good school life he would have to learn that too. Severus didn't even need to ask Margaret twice. The woman seemed to want to correct him. The classes were boring but he understood a lot about how society worked and how to maintain a proper appearance (his clothes didn't help at all) this would improve when he had a wand.
He wanted to go to Slytherin because his mother had been in that house and when he said this Petunia started to talk badly about Slytherin at first he thought it was prejudice or house rivalry since his mother had told him that but she was a pureblood and came from a rich family she was part of the proper group while he was a poor half-blood.
Petunia always said that wizarding and muggle children were the same in terms of personality and classists and bullies existed in the wizarding world he didn't want to disappoint his mother but he didn't want to be segregated in his own dormitory for seven years and Ravenclaw wasn't bad.
Lily was overjoyed in the summer of 1971. They were going to Hogwarts.
Petunia was also happy and began giving lectures and classes on everything they needed to know.
His mother gave him, his school supplies. He only needed to buy his defense books. He had money saved, but it wasn't much.
Petunia altered his mother's clothes and she fixed them so that no one would notice that they belonged to a girl. Although they were second-hand, they were made of good materials and were in good condition. They were the newest clothes he had ever owned. He took all the shirts and jackets, and Petunia decided that it would be best to sell the dresses since he would need the money.
On the day of the shopping in Diagon Alley, the two went to a second-hand clothing store. She made the sale and helped him choose his uniform and pairs of pants. He felt embarrassed about buying clothes with her, but Petunia showed no embarrassment. The purchase he wanted to make most was his wand.
He thanked his mother for allowing him to have a wand because despite being poor, he would have practically new school supplies and a new wand. Many children had to use second-hand wands and old, worn-out materials that not even magic could fix.
Petunia had told them never to make fun of or talk about second-hand materials with anyone because the subject could be embarrassing. He had worn old, worn-out clothes his entire life, so he could understand the feeling.
He admired the way Petunia could tolerate and not care about her family life. He had noticed Petunia's parents' favoritism towards Lily (who hadn't noticed anything), but she didn't care or had already gotten over it.
She loved Lily and even he received a little affection and attention from her. Petunia treated him like a little brother, but she seemed to want to spend as little time as possible around them and the distance seemed to be mutual. Lily was the only connection between Petunia and her parents and she didn't even realize it since the three of them pretended very well in front of her.
He wanted to tell Lily about her family dynamics, but he didn't want the peace to be broken and Petunia herself didn't want her to know. At the moment, they would be away for nine months and Petunia wouldn't interact with her parents. Hogwarts was perfect for students with family problems.
On the day of departure, he went to the Evans' house very early. He took a shower and put on his new clothes. He was clean and tidy. No one could tell where he came from. He looked like any other well-groomed boy.
The two adults took a long time to say goodbye, although they never came to say goodbye to Petunia. They only left when more families started arriving at the station.
The three of them settled in the carriage and waited while they read and talked. Eloise Duncan joined them. She was one of Petunia's friends. She was a Potions enthusiast and didn't mind talking to him about it.
Severus also met Gwen Jones, who was the current captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team.
Pandora and Xenofolio Lovegood. The two looked like a couple, they were so close that it was disgusting.
Lily had a pointless fight with James Potter that he couldn't understand. He was in doubt about whether or not to go to Slytherin. Severus was a little disappointed to see that the selection method was a hat.
Old hat, he was a relic, yes, but he expected something more captivating. He observed the Slytherin table at the beginning of the selection.
Sirius Black, who came from a pure-blood family, went to Gryffindor, which caused a huge commotion. To his surprise, Lily was selected in Gryffindor. He thought she would want to be with Petunia in Ravenclaw, but she went to Gryffindor, Slytherin's rival house. If he went to that house, he would have difficulty interacting with her.
He didn't know if he would be able to make new friends, so Slytherin was no longer an option.
When the hat landed on his head, he asked for Ravenclaw. He insisted because the hat wanted Slytherin, but with much insistence, he went to the house he wanted. Petunia gave him a huge smile and he felt bad for wanting to go to Slytherin. The food at the castle was delicious.
He had to use all the self-control he had and all the etiquette lessons he learned from Mrs. Evans. He ate elegantly and without messing around.
Severus quickly adapted to his yearmates. He followed all of Petunia's advice. He tried to be friendly. He didn't touch on sensitive topics, and he never touched on any subject that might be sensitive to them.
He had two roommates: Brandon Devis and Eliot Smith (he was Helga's Hufflepuff cousin). He was lucky to have been placed in a room with three students instead of the one with five.
