Chapter 1094 - 1091: Kind-hearted
Chapter 1094: Chapter 1091: Kind-hearted
“Madam, the room has gotten cold, should I go close the window?” Su Mei asked softly.
Ye Muyu looked up, “No need, you all can rest outside in the side room too. I will read for a while. Tell the kitchen to prepare some hot water, as the lord will probably need it when he returns later.”
“Yes.” Su Mei and Chun Xing withdrew.
Chu Heng only came back in the latter half of the night.
He carried an aura of blood about him, and even after washing, when he entered the inner house, his presence was still detected by Su Mei and a few maidservants. Their faces slightly changed, and they dared not lift their heads to look at him.
“My lord, the lady instructed the kitchen to keep the hot water ready, saying that after a whole day of work, a bath would relieve fatigue,” Su Mei reported.
Chu Heng saw that the lights in the room had been extinguished and, noticing the late hour, knew that Ye Muyu had already retired for the night. He could not possibly enter with the stench of blood still on him.
He followed into the bathroom.
Immediately, an older maidservant brought over water, filled the bathtub, and Su Mei added a few drops of medicinal herbs to relieve fatigue before she withdrew with the others.
Chu Heng closed the door, and once the room was empty, he slowly undressed and stepped into the tub.
The water, still a bit hot, wrapped around his skin, slowly turning it red, but his mind was entirely filled with Lin Hao’s confession from the prison.
Outside the room.
Su Mei and Chun Xing stood at the door with two other servant boys, who usually accompanied Chu Heng on his various official tasks.
“Young masters, please have some hot tea,” Chun Xing, straightforward in character, also lowered her voice as she poured tea for the two from the second household.
The two servant boys thanked them hastily and, not daring to enter, waited under the eaves outside the door, at least sheltering from the wind.
“Young master, did the lord really enter the prison today?” Chun Xing asked curiously.
Su Mei did not want her to inquire but, thinking that the lady might ask about it the next day, she acquiesced.
“Yes, you do not know, but the lord interrogating was too fierce. We could only wait outside the prison gate, and even from that distance, we could hear the screams inside.”
Chun Xing swallowed hard, “The lord is a good man, as long as we do not make mistakes, we will be fine.”
Seeing her like this, Su Mei couldn’t help but let a smile escape, “The lady is also a good person.”
“Isn’t that the truth? But I didn’t expect the magistrate of Yuzhou to be so bold. I heard he embezzled at least over a million taels of silver. That’s a lot of silver.”
Considering that a servant boy earns one or two taels of silver a month, they could never earn that much in several lifetimes.
“Did the magistrate of Yuzhou confess?” Su Mei asked, unusually.
“He did, with irrefutable evidence. I heard it won’t be long before they behead him.” The servant boy was somewhat scared and also felt that the silver was not worth coveting, “Even if embezzled, one wouldn’t have the life to spend it.”
“Isn’t that so.” Chun Xing nodded earnestly, “Our days in the Chu family are really good. I’ve never worn such fine clothes before and even have some silver to spend. Where else could you find such good work outside?”
“Hey, Sister Chun Xing, you might not know, but here in Yuzhou City, just those two workshops owned by the lady provide jobs. As long as one is honest and abides by the rules, one can work there.”
“Of course, I know that, it’s because the lady is kindhearted,” Chun Xing, who stayed close to Ye Muyu, was well-aware of the lady’s charitable actions, “The lady really is too kind-hearted. Look, which other rich families provide working opportunities for common folks like us, especially women?”
Most women from decent families would only sell handkerchiefs. Because of this, women relied on their dowries after marriage. If they married into bad families, a woman’s entire life could be ruined.
