Chapter 16: Co-Renting with a Beauty
“Boss Li, due to personal reasons, I can’t be by your side all the time to protect you. But if you trust my abilities, I can work part-time for you,” Zhou Lang said to Li Mengxue.
“Part-time?”
Li Mengxue asked, somewhat confused.
“That means you can call me whenever you need protection. Otherwise, I need to focus on my things, but I can still ensure your safety,” Zhou Lang explained. Over the past few days, he had realized the benefits of his newfound strength, and he wanted to spend time cultivating the Dual Cultivation Manual to further enhance his abilities, so he could eventually take revenge on Ye Qianqian and Nie Yuanxiong for humiliating him.
“That works too,” Li Mengxue agreed after some thought.
And so, Zhou Lang became the part-time bodyguard for this fiery and beautiful boss. However, he kept a low profile and continued working as a waiter until 2 a.m. before leaving.
…
“Brother Lang!”
As soon as Zhou Lang exited the bar, he saw Zhao Xiaorou standing at the entrance with a smile. Zhao Xiaorou had changed into casual clothes, and no matter what she wore, her pure appearance was always captivating.
“Why are you here? I told you to rest early. It’s late, and you’re running around—aren’t you afraid of encountering bad people again?”
Zhou Lang walked over to her.
“I couldn’t sleep alone, so I came out to play with you,” Zhao Xiaorou said with a smile.
“Brother Lang, with you, a martial arts master, protecting me, why should I be afraid of bad people?”
“It’s late at night; there’s nothing open even if we wanted to go shopping,” Zhou Lang remarked.
“How about we go hiking? The moon is beautiful tonight. Let’s climb Feiyun Peak,” Zhao Xiaorou suggested.
“I heard it’s a great place to admire the moon and watch the sunrise, but I’ve never been there.”
“Really? It’s hard to believe that someone from Feiyun City hasn’t climbed Feiyun Peak,” Zhou Lang said in surprise. Feiyun City was named after Feiyun Peak, and it was unusual for someone as active as Zhao Xiaorou to have never visited.
“I’m not a local; I’m from the provincial capital,” Zhao Xiaorou pouted.
“We still need to find a place to live tomorrow. How about we wait until we settle in before making plans?”
Zhou Lang suggested, not pressing further about Zhao Xiaorou’s background.
“Alright, but tonight, you can’t go back to school. You have to stay with me at the guesthouse,” Zhao Xiaorou insisted.
Unable to refuse, Zhou Lang agreed.
…
That night, as before, one slept on the bed while the other slept on the floor. After Zhao Xiaorou fell asleep, Zhou Lang focused his thoughts and entered the Heaven and Earth Palace, which was housed within the ancient coin passed down through his family.
“Brother Lang.”
As soon as he entered, the artifact spirit, Xiao Xi, appeared before him and bowed slightly.
“Xiao Xi, there’s no need to be so formal with me,” Zhou Lang said quickly.
Xiao Xi nodded and said, “Brother Lang, you should cultivate in the Heaven and Earth Palace since the spiritual energy outside is too thin, which slows down progress. The former owner set up a Spirit Gathering Array in the palace, so the spiritual energy here is abundant.”
“Today, I want to study medicine. It’s quieter here and more convenient,” Zhou Lang explained. His grandfather, Zhou Maolin, had died from a strange illness after years of suffering, which had deeply affected Zhou Lang. He was determined to study medicine and heal others, which is why he chose to major in clinical medicine after the college entrance exam.
Now that he had learned martial arts and cultivation techniques from the Dual Cultivation Manual, Zhou Lang believed that if he could master its medical skills, he could become the greatest doctor of his time.
“Brother Lang, since you’ve already reached the Qi Refining stage, you have a solid foundation. Learning medical skills will be much easier for you and can be done quickly. Just follow the Dual Cultivation Manual, and you shouldn’t need my guidance,” Xiao Xi said with a smile.
“Alright, you go and cultivate. I’ll figure it out myself,” Zhou Lang nodded, feeling that Xiao Xi’s revealing attire made it hard for him to concentrate.
“Okay,” Xiao Xi responded and left.
“If traditional medicine could inherit even a tenth of the medical skills in this manual, it wouldn’t have been overshadowed by foreign medicine,” Zhou Lang thought as he flipped through the medical section of the Dual Cultivation Manual. He couldn’t help but marvel at its profound and extensive knowledge.
…
That night, Zhou Lang didn’t sleep at all, focusing entirely on studying medical skills until dawn. By the time he exited the ancestral coin, he had not only progressed as a cultivator but also reached a high level of medical expertise. The knowledge in the manual was so thorough that he memorized and mastered it almost instantly, achieving in one night what would take others decades or even a lifetime to learn.
The next morning, Zhou Lang and Zhao Xiaorou went to look for an apartment near Dianxi University. Around noon, they found a two-bedroom, one-living-room apartment of over 60 square meters in a shared housing complex. The rent was 1,200 yuan per month, with all furniture and appliances included, along with a gas stove, making it very convenient.
Since Zhou Lang didn’t have much money, Zhao Xiaorou covered three months’ rent in advance.
In the afternoon, Zhou Lang went to the school to collect his books, clothes, and bedding, officially moving in with Zhao Xiaorou.
“Xiaorou, I’ll pay you back next month. I’m no longer working as a waiter; I’m a part-time bodyguard for the bar owner,” Zhou Lang said after they had settled in.
“How much is your salary, Brother Lang?”
Zhao Xiaorou asked.
“Ten thousand yuan,” Zhou Lang replied honestly.
“Brother Lang, that salary doesn’t seem like much considering your skills,” Zhao Xiaorou remarked.
“I only go when the boss needs me, so it’s pretty flexible,” Zhou Lang explained.
“Feiyun City isn’t a big metropolis, so the pay is decent.”
“Yeah, that’s a white-collar salary, not bad at all. So it looks like you have time to accompany me shopping this afternoon and to climb Feiyun Peak tonight,” Zhao Xiaorou said excitedly.
After a brief rest, Zhao Xiaorou dragged Zhou Lang out shopping.
Their transportation was Zhou Lang’s bicycle, with him pedaling and Zhao Xiaorou sitting behind, looking just like a couple.
There’s no denying it—women are naturally drawn to shopping. Despite the sweltering heat and blazing sun, Zhao Xiaorou spent hours shopping with undiminished enthusiasm.
As evening approached, they had dinner at a food stall and then biked to Feiyun Peak.
…
Feiyun Peak, located on the outskirts of the city, is the highest peak in Feiyun City and one of its top tourist attractions. By the time they reached the foot of the mountain, the sun had already set, but the sky wasn’t completely dark because a bright moon had risen in the east, casting a soft glow.
In the cool night air, with the heat of the day dissipated, they began their ascent of Feiyun Peak. Although the mountain had steep roads, Zhou Lang, with Zhao Xiaorou on his bike, handled the climb with ease.
Within ten minutes, they reached the mountainside.
At the mountainside lies Feiyun Temple. Under the moonlight, the temple stood quietly, but there were four black cars parked in front of the temple’s courtyard.
“Wow, those are some nice cars! Do monks drive cars like these? They must be loaded,” Zhao Xiaorou exclaimed as she jumped off the bike in surprise.
Zhou Lang also found it strange but suddenly his expression changed.
“Hands up!”
Out of nowhere, four agile men jumped out of the cars, pointing guns at Zhou Lang and Zhao Xiaorou.
