Chapter 1: Chapter 1: roll with it
Okay, Steve. Step one is to get burgers from Ralph's restaurant. Step two: come home, watch a new Frogger video or play Overwatch and be in comp as Lucio. Mm... both sounds good. Maybe I can squeeze in a ranked match and just relax after a busy day. Can't go wrong with burgers and some gaming time.
Wait, where exactly is Ralph's again? I need to remember the address. I should probably grab my phone... I swear I keep forgetting to map out the easiest route.
Suddenly, a voice broke through his thoughts.
"Excuse me, young man!"
Steve turned, a little surprised, and found a strange figure standing in front of him. The man was dressed in an elaborate cosplay butler outfit — complete with a monocle, a bowtie, and a waistcoat. He had the air of someone who might've walked out of an alternate dimension, but Steve didn't have the energy to question it.
"Yeah? Can I help you?" Steve asked, a bit perplexed.
The man's smile was both too wide and too confident. "I am seeking a fine dining establishment here in Los Angeles... I've heard of a rather exceptional restaurant run by a certain Shirou Emiya, and I simply must try it. Do you, by any chance, know the way?"
Steve blinked. "Uh, you mean Ralph's, right? It's on the west side, near the park."
The man's eyes lit up. "Ah, splendid! West side, yes. Yes! I shall be off at once—"
Steve's head tilted in confusion as the man began to turn away.
"Wait... Are you sure—"
Before Steve could finish his sentence, there was a sudden white light, flooding his vision. His body stiffened as his surroundings began to dissolve into nothingness.
The stranger's voice broke through the chaos with a smug tone.
"Did you say something?"
And with that, Steve was no longer in Los Angeles
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve groaned as he pushed himself to his feet, the remnants of trash falling off his hoodie. His body felt too fluid, too foreign. "This is bad," he thought, trying to steady himself. "How the heck did I get here? And why do I feel so... different?"
Before he could gather his bearings, a voice cut through the alley.
"Oi, are you okay back there?"
Steve quickly turned to see a woman standing at the entrance of the alley. She was wearing a simple, but well-tailored outfit, her hair tied back in a bun with a few loose strands framing her face. Her features were warm and welcoming, with an air of authority that caught Steve off guard.
She looked at him with a mixture of concern and curiosity. "What's a boy like you doing here?" she asked, stepping toward him.
Steve blinked rapidly, trying to process her words. Japanese? He hadn't spoken much of it, but his mind was suddenly flooded with words he barely recognized.
"Ah... gomen..." Steve stammered, his Japanese coming out in broken fragments. "I... don't... um... understand. Can you... help me?" He raised a hand, motioning helplessly at his new form. "Where... is this?"
The woman's eyes softened with understanding. She smiled gently, as if trying to put him at ease. "This is Japan, young one. You look... lost."
Steve nodded slowly, taking a moment to absorb the words. Japan? The realization hit him hard, and he glanced down at his body again, still struggling to process what had happened. I'm not just in a new city... I'm somewhere else entirely, and I'm not even me anymore.
The woman looked at him curiously, noticing how out of place he appeared. She stepped closer, her gaze softening even more. "Are you okay? You look... like a foreigner. Are you hurt?"
Steve quickly shook his head, flustered by her attention. He couldn't explain everything, especially not in broken Japanese. "I... I'm okay." He wiped a hand over his face, trying to make sense of the situation. "I... don't know what's happening."
The woman, Asa Yamagami, tilted her head, studying him with a knowing gaze. "You seem lost. You speak a little Japanese, but you're not from around here, are you?"
Steve's mouth went dry. "Ah, no..." he mumbled, embarrassed by his lack of fluency. "I... I'm... from far away."
Asa studied him for a moment longer, then placed a hand on her chin, deep in thought. "If you're lost... I could take you to my place. It's not far. You might be able to get your bearings there."
Steve hesitated. "I... don't want to be trouble." He struggled with the words, trying his best to show that he was grateful, but also unsure of where this was all headed.
Asa's eyes softened even further, her gentle smile reassuring him. "No trouble at all. It's dangerous to be out here alone, especially with how you seem... lost in this place."
"Th-thank you," Steve managed to say, his voice small. He was still so disoriented by everything. "I... I need... need help. Please..."
Asa gave a soft nod and gestured for him to follow her. "Come with me. You'll be safe. We'll figure things out, okay?"
Steve slowly followed her, still feeling overwhelmed by his new form, the broken Japanese he was trying to speak, and the strange situation he found himself in. But for now, he had no other choice.
"Okay... okay, I'll follow you."
He walked beside the woman, his mind racing as he tried to adjust to his new reality. A new body. Japan. It was all too much to process, but one thing was certain—he wasn't alone. And maybe, just maybe, he'd find some answers with her help.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a brief walk through the narrow alley, the lady led Steve into her modest home. It was a small, cozy place with warm lighting and soft wooden furniture. The house had a calming atmosphere, and the scent of something cooking drifted from the kitchen.
As soon as they stepped inside, she turned to him with a gentle smile. "You must be exhausted. I'll make you something to eat later, but for now, you should wash up. The bathroom is just down the hall. You're free to use it."
Steve nodded gratefully, still trying to adjust to his surroundings. He shuffled down the hallway, feeling strange in his new body, before finally entering the bathroom. The door clicked shut behind him, and for a moment, it was just silence.
Steve slowly walked over to the mirror, his heart racing. The reflection staring back at him was... not him.
He reached up and touched his face, feeling the warm skin, darker than he was used to, with an odd combination of features—Brazilian, Japanese, and American—all mixed into one face that wasn't his. His eyes were large, with a glint of something playful and energetic that didn't belong to the confused, uncertain Steve he used to be.
"Okay, Steve... or, Lucio? Is that even your real name now? Am I really... this guy?"
He stared at himself for a long moment. His hair, now in wild curls with vibrant green highlights, looked like it belonged in a music video. His hoodie felt like it was tailored perfectly to his new form—too comfortable. His headphones sat snug on his ears, glowing faintly, and he could feel the beat of something inside him. It was strange, almost electric.
"I guess this is my life now. Lucio... huh. Just roll with it. Just… roll with it."
He took a deep breath, shaking his head in disbelief. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "Alright, Lucio. You've got this."
After a few more seconds, Steve—now Lucio—pushed himself away from the mirror. He was still processing the situation, but there was no time for further panic. He needed answers.
He opened the bathroom door and stepped back into the hallway, but as he turned the corner, he froze. Standing in the living room was a girl, probably around 12, with white hair tied into a loose ponytail. Her wide eyes were locked onto him with a curious expression, and there was something about her that felt familiar, yet... different.
Kiriko. The name popped into his head before he could think about it too much. He realized with a start that she was the daughter of the woman who'd just helped him.
"Ah..." Lucio blinked, trying to piece things together, still unsure of what was going on. He took a small step forward and greeted her with a smile. "Hey there."
The girl's eyes widened. She tilted her head slightly. "You're not from here, are you?"
Lucio paused, unsure of how to answer, but before he could respond, the woman who'd helped him earlier, appeared behind him.
"Ah, Kiriko, meet our guest," Asa said, her voice soft. "This is?"
"My name is Lucio." Lucio said to them.
"Lucio?" Asa repeated, her voice almost questioning, as if she was testing the name. She nodded and smiled gently. "I see. Well, Lucio, welcome to our home. I'm Asa Yamagami, and this is my daughter, Kiriko."
Lucio nodded, still processing everything. He smiled awkwardly at Kiriko, who was still staring at him with those wide, curious eyes.
"Nice to meet you, Kiriko," he said, his Japanese still a bit broken, but the words felt easier now.
Kiriko simply nodded in return, but there was something in her gaze—an unspoken understanding. It was as if she knew there was something more to him than just the boy who had wandered into their lives.
Asa studied Lucio for a moment, her expression still soft, yet a little unsure. She stepped forward and placed a hand gently on his shoulder. "You don't have to explain everything right away, Lucio. But for now, take a seat. I'm going to prepare something for us to eat. You must be starving."
Lucio nodded again, this time more confidently. He still didn't know what had happened to him, or why he had ended up in this strange situation, but for now, at least he had a place to stay. He could breathe, relax for a bit... and figure out his next move.
"Thanks, Yamagami-san," he said quietly, his voice steady now.
As they all moved into the living room, Lucio couldn't help but wonder about the strange connection he felt to this place. Could it be fate? Or was it just a coincidence that he had met Asa and Kiriko, this family, in the middle of such chaos?
But one thing was for sure, he doesn't know where he is. How he got here and slowly missing home.
(later)
Asa led Lucio to the living room and motioned to the couch. "You can sleep here for the night," she said, her voice soft but reassuring. "Tomorrow, we'll figure out what to do next. You've had a long day."
Lucio nodded, grateful for her kindness, but still feeling a little lost. "Thanks, Yamagami-san," he replied, settling down onto the couch. The cushions were soft, and the blanket she gave him was warm, but his mind was far from restful.
Kiriko stood in the doorway, watching him for a moment. Her wide eyes softened as she said quietly, "Goodnight, Lucio." She didn't seem scared or unsure—just calm, like she knew everything would be okay.
Lucio gave her a tired smile. "Goodnight, Kiriko," he said, his voice still rough from the emotional whirlwind he'd been through.
As Kiriko left the room, the sound of her footsteps fading into the distance, Lucio closed his eyes. The exhaustion from the day weighed heavily on him, but sleep didn't come easily. His mind was racing with questions—Why am I here? What is going on? Why me?
He shifted in the couch, trying to get comfortable, but no matter how he adjusted, the confusion gnawed at him. He wasn't sure how long he lay there, but suddenly, the air around him seemed to shift. His body tensed, and then...
Welcome, Lucio.
A cool, robotic voice echoed in his mind. The voice was clear, precise, but somehow soothing—like it was meant to be there. Lucio froze, eyes snapping open, his heartbeat racing.
Who... who's that?
This is Athena, your new companion and assistant. I am here to guide you through the system's functions. You will find that you have a unique power now, Lucio, one that will grow with you as you progress. The voice was calm, but there was an underlying energy, like it knew exactly what was happening.
Lucio blinked, his breath hitching slightly. "Wait... what do you mean, unique power? What system? What's happening to me?"
Your current status is classified as 'Hero Quirk-Enhanced'. The system that has integrated with your mind is an Overwatch-based protocol. This is a randomization system, where you will acquire new abilities in a Gacha format. Each power you receive corresponds to a Hero from a distant battlefront, and with each one, your abilities will grow stronger. Your transformation into Lucio is only the beginning. Athena's tone was matter-of-fact, as if it had already run through this explanation a hundred times.
Lucio's mind was reeling. Overwatch? What does that even mean? He couldn't help but feel like he was losing touch with reality. The fact that he was being told he could gain new powers, randomly, in some sort of game-like system, was almost too much to process.
The first step is to rest, Lucio. When you wake, you will be able to access the Gacha polls. Do not worry. You are not alone in this. Athena will guide you every step of the way.
Lucio tried to calm himself, but it felt like the world was spinning. What kind of powers am I going to get? What if this is all just a dream?
Dream or not, your journey has already begun. Athena's voice seemed to have an edge of finality, as if there was no going back.
Lucio let out a long sigh and closed his eyes again, still feeling the hum of something unknown within him. The idea of the Gacha, of heroes and powers, made him uneasy. But for now, there was nothing he could do except wait.
Good night, Lucio. Rest well. The system will be waiting when you wake.
Lucio's mind raced, but the words of the Athena announcer seemed to lull him into a strange, robotic tranquility. Slowly, his thoughts began to quiet, and before he knew it, he fell into a deep.

(Asa pov)
Asa Yamagami stood at the door of her modest home, watching the boy who had suddenly appeared on her doorstep. His appearance was peculiar, as if he didn't belong in this world. The way his eyes darted around, the uncertainty in his posture—it was clear he was lost, disoriented. But there was something else too. A quiet energy emanated from him, a presence she couldn't quite place. She wasn't one to trust easily, but her instincts, honed by years of experience as a swordmaster for the Shimada clan, told her there was more to this boy than meets the eye.
"If you're lost... I could take you to my place. It's not far." she had said, her voice steady and authoritative despite the oddness of the situation. "You might be able to get your bearings there."
She led him inside, keeping her distance at first. He seemed like an ordinary kid at first glance, his clothes slightly worn, and his face confused. But there was a sharpness in his eyes, a glimmer of something... otherworldly. She couldn't explain it. Her own life, built on discipline, honor, and the strict codes of the Shimada clan, had made her keenly aware of when someone was hiding something—when something didn't quite fit.
As they entered the small, cozy house, she kept an eye on him. He hadn't said much, except a simple "thank you" when she offered him a place to sleep. There was no arrogance, no bravado. Just a boy, clearly confused by whatever had happened to him.
"I'll make you something to eat later," Asa said, her words softening as she saw the boy's fatigue. "For now, you should wash up. The bathroom is down the hall. Use it while I prepare something for us."
As she moved to the kitchen, preparing a meal, she could still feel his presence in the house. It was strange. She had met many people in her life—some were allies, others enemies. But this boy felt different. And in her line of work, feeling different wasn't always a good thing.
Minutes later, she heard the sound of footsteps approaching from the hall. When Lucio emerged from the bathroom, she was momentarily taken aback. His appearance had changed since the first time she saw him. The boy—no, the young man—had transformed, almost unrecognizably. His features, though still youthful, were more defined. His posture more confident. And those headphones, glowing faintly with a pulse that seemed almost... alive.
But what struck her most was his eyes. There was something in them that reminded her of the intense focus she herself had spent years cultivating. It was the look of someone who had seen something beyond the ordinary world—a look that she knew too well, a look that only came with great trials and experience.
Lucio, or whatever his true name was, seemed to pause when he saw her. Asa took a breath and gave him a small, welcoming smile. "Ah, Kiriko, meet our guest," she called to her daughter, who was standing just behind Lucio, watching him closely.
When Lucio spoke, his words were halting, a bit broken, but his tone was polite. "My name is Lucio," he introduced himself simply, his Japanese rough around the edges but understandable.
Asa studied him carefully, her sharp gaze scanning his every movement. She knew something wasn't right, but she didn't press him for answers. Not yet. Instead, she gave him the benefit of the doubt, choosing to trust the boy who had ended up in her home, seeking refuge.
"Lucio," she repeated softly, testing the name on her tongue. It sounded unfamiliar, but she nodded in acceptance. "I see. Well, Lucio, welcome to our home. I'm Asa Yamagami, and this is my daughter, Kiriko."
He nodded, still seeming unsure, but there was a hint of relief in his eyes as Asa spoke to him with kindness. Kiriko, for her part, watched Lucio with a quiet intensity, something in her gaze making Asa pause for a moment. Her daughter was perceptive beyond her years, and Asa trusted Kiriko's instincts.
"Nice to meet you, Kiriko," Lucio said, his words still a bit awkward, but more sincere this time.
Asa watched as her daughter simply nodded, her expression neutral. It was rare for Kiriko to be so quiet around someone new, especially someone as unfamiliar as Lucio. Asa made a mental note to keep an eye on this boy. There was a story here—one that she would get to the bottom of in due time.
As she stepped forward, Asa placed a hand gently on Lucio's shoulder. Her touch was firm, a reassurance that even though he was an outsider, he would be protected for the time being. "You don't have to explain everything right away, Lucio. But for now, take a seat. I'm going to prepare something for us to eat. You must be starving."
Lucio nodded, his earlier confusion seeming to dissipate slightly. Asa led him to the table, the warmth of the kitchen enveloping them both. As she worked, her mind wandered. She couldn't shake the feeling that Lucio was more than he appeared. There was something beneath the surface—something hidden, waiting to be uncovered. And the more she observed him, the more she realized that his presence in her life was no coincidence.
She would protect him, for now. But the question remained: Who, or what, was Lucio? And what had brought him here?
As the night wore on, Asa couldn't help but feel the pull of destiny. Lucio was meant to be here, that much she knew. And whatever was happening in his life, she would make sure he wouldn't face it alone.
