Chapter 121: Hold The Line
General POV:
It was a restless night for those Overwatch forces that resided in the town. It was to be expected as everyone knew there was an imminent attack in only a couple of hours. One that very well might end their lives. However, it was mainly the higher rankings who had yet to experience the battle themselves who were worried. Nearly every soldier was in battle before, therefore, nearly everyone had been healed by Shawn's squad. They rested comfortably, thinking that they were in the safest place in the world right now.
Shawn's POV:
I rested that night, even though I didn't need to, but I couldn't explain why. It just felt...right to do so. I arose way before the sun's rays could even be seen to find that strangely, everyone else was following my example as well.
Jumping out of bed, I'm instantly at a hundred percent and ready to work for probably the next five days. As I strutted out of my designated dorm, I tried to hide my carefree attitude behind a veil of seriousness. As much as I tried, I couldn't help but feel unconcerned about the upcoming attack as I knew that Anubis had nothing to cause me harm. Of course, I knew to never underestimate him, as he was an AI and capable of learning, but I was beginning to think it was partially the influence of having this power. Some days, I felt immortal.
My thoughts are interrupted as members of my team slowly begin to gather around me. I had momentarily forgotten that I had to make the decision of what my team will be doing. For this mission, we'd be on the defense, which made our jobs easier in a sense.
"Good morning, everyone." I address with, hiding the humor as I spy Virginia with dried slobber on the side of her face.
"Good... good morning." Is the sum of their collective response.
"Perfect. As you guys know, we'll be coming under attack in just under three hours. As it is a defense mission, we'll have the advantage of holding the perimeter which makes our jobs easier. It is expected that they'll come from the north, but from experience, I can say that we'll be surrounded within minutes.
So, strategically, the church in the center of this town makes the most sense for us to set up. The runners and medics will remain the same for this mission as well, but don't get comfortable as I can decide to swap it up depending on the intensity of the attack.
I can expect things to get out of hand pretty quickly, so I advise everyone to remain vigilant. Remember everything I taught you, and it goes without saying, don't die. I don't want to go through the process of replacing you."
Everyone remains quiet, remaining silent as my words soak in, deciding to focus on the upcoming battle instead of wasting words. I could feel them heed my words as they pondered just what we were about to face.
My thoughts drifted momentarily to how I could further improve my team before a soldier came running to us.
"We have movement to the north, they're here earlier than expected!" He shouts at us, causing a moment of panic in my group.
"Listen everyone!" I shout, interrupting their thoughts of panic to get them to focus on me instead.
"Listen to that." Everyone stops as they try to understand what I'm referring to. From where we are, we can hear the soldiers running around as they try to finish preparations last second. Beyond that, we can hear a rhythmic thudding in the distance.
"That's the sound of the enemy. Over thousands of omnics all aimed with the sole purpose to eliminate us. Why am I pointing this out? Because that's what everyone knows. I can assure you, that I know for a fact, that the omnics are more scared of us right now then we are of them.
Why do I say that? This was a force meant to reinforce New York. They know that we're barely two hundred strong and this was their response. They fear what we've done. Fear what we're capable of. What we're going to do. This is not our time to die. Instead, this is our time to show just who we are. Our time to show everyone who we are. Well after this war is over and won, our names are going down in history. They will remember us as... the Rose Rescue Specialist! Now let's go kick names and take ass."
A/N: Sorry about that "break", but I was typing some chapters in a cafe one day weeks ago and some random person fell and spilled their hot coffee on my laptop ruining it. I was waiting on Amazon to ship me my next laptop because trying to type chapters on my phone is horrendous.
