Chapter 46: Meeting Hagrid

Hagrid's swift reply brought a sense of relief to Harry. The giant of a man had agreed to meet him on Halloween morning, due to his busy schedule leading up to the holiday. With no classes scheduled for that day, Harry knew the timing couldn't have been better.

As the eve of Halloween approached, Harry found himself eagerly anticipating their meeting with Hagrid. The prospect of uncovering more about the mysterious corridor and its guardian fueled his determination. As the clock ticked closer to Halloween morning, Harry's anticipation grew, knowing that their meeting with Hagrid would mark the beginning of the adventure.

On Halloween morning, Harry awoke with a sense of excitement that seemed to course through his veins. Throwing back the covers, Harry swung his legs over the edge of his bed and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. The room was bathed in a soft, golden light as the morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the familiar surroundings of the Gryffindor dormitory.

With a sense of urgency, Harry quickly got dressed. He wore a soft, silver-grey sweater paired with comfortable charcoal trousers, his mind already racing with thoughts of the day ahead. He threw a quick look in the mirror to see himself, but what he saw left him utterly shocked.

Staring back at him was his reflection, but something was different. His famous lightning scar, the mark of his connection to Voldemort, was starting to fade. The once prominent scar now appeared faint and almost translucent, as if it were slowly disappearing before his very eyes.

Harry's heart raced as he processed the implications of this startling revelation. If his scar was fading, it could only mean one thing – he was no longer a Horcrux. The realization sent a surge of conflicting emotions coursing through him. Relief washed over him at the thought of being free from the burden of carrying a piece of Voldemort's soul, but at the same time, he couldn't shake the fear of what this could mean for his future.

"I could bloody well speak Parseltongue because of being a blasted Horcrux, and that's what allowed me to save Ginny from the Chamber of Secrets... but now what?" Harry cursed under his breath, his mind racing with the implications of his fading scar.

"I'll ponder this later. Right now, I need to fetch Ron and Hermione and head to Hagrid's, if my plans are to work" Harry thought to himself, setting aside his concerns for the moment as he focused on the task at hand.

As he made his way down to the Great Hall for breakfast, Harry's steps were light with anticipation. The castle seemed to hum with excitement, the air tinged with an electric energy that could only mean one thing: Halloween had arrived at Hogwarts.

Entering the Great Hall, Harry spotted Ron and Hermione already seated at the Gryffindor table, their faces alight with anticipation for the day's festivities.

"Morning, Harry!" Ron called out, waving him over.

"Good morning, Ron, Hermione," Harry greeted them with a smile as he took a seat beside them. "Excited for Halloween?"

Ron nodded enthusiastically. "You bet! I can't wait for the feast tonight. It's going to be epic!"

Hermione's eyes sparkled with excitement. "And don't forget about the decorations! I heard they're going to be spectacular."

Harry nodded in agreement, but his mind was elsewhere. He couldn't shake the anticipation of their meeting with Hagrid, the prospect of uncovering the secrets of the third-floor corridor consuming his thoughts.

"So, what are your plans for today, Harry?" Hermione asked, breaking through his reverie.

Harry hesitated for a moment, debating how much to reveal. "Actually, I've got plans for this morning. I was hoping you guys would come along."

Ron raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What kind of plans?"

Harry glanced around to ensure no one was eavesdropping before leaning in closer to his friends. "Remember I sent a letter to Hagrid few days back? In that letter I asked if we could meet him and he replied that we could meet today after breakfast."

Ron's eyes widened with excitement. "You mean we're going to visit Hagrid? That's brilliant!"

Hermione's curiosity was piqued. "I've always wanted to see Hagrid's hut! Count me in, Harry."

A sense of relief washed over Harry as his friends eagerly joined him without needing an invitation.

With breakfast finished, the trio set off towards Hagrid's hut, their footsteps echoing through the deserted corridors of the castle. As they approached the edge of the Forbidden Forest, Harry's anticipation reached its peak.

Today was the day they would begin their journey into the unknown, and Harry couldn't wait to see where it would lead them.

With renewed energy, the trio quickly finished their meal and set off towards Hagrid's hut, their footsteps echoing through the deserted corridors of Hogwarts. As they approached the edge of the Forbidden Forest, Harry's anticipation reached its peak.

Finally, they arrived at Hagrid's hut, a quaint and cozy cabin nestled among the trees. As they approached Hagrid's hut, the heavy wooden door creaked open, revealing the towering figure of Rubeus Hagrid. Standing at over eleven feet tall, with broad shoulders and hands the size of dinner plates, Hagrid cut an imposing yet welcoming figure. His bushy beard and wild mane of hair framed a face that was weathered but kind, with eyes that sparkled with warmth and mischief. Despite his intimidating size, there was a gentle aura about him that instantly put Harry, Ron, and Hermione at ease.

"Harry, me boy! Come on in... Come on in," boomed Hagrid's hearty voice as he swung open the door to his hut, the wood creaking under the weight of his massive frame.

The trio entered the hut, marveling at the eclectic collection of magical creatures and artifacts that adorned the walls. Hagrid ushered them to a large wooden table, where he had laid out a spread of tea and pastries.

"Sit yourselves down!" Hagrid exclaimed enthusiastically, his booming voice echoing through the cozy confines of his hut. Gesturing with his oversized hands, he motioned for Harry, Ron, and Hermione to take a seat on the large wooden chairs that seemed almost comically small in comparison to his immense stature.

"Would ya like a cuppa?" Hagrid offered, already bustling about the small kitchen area, preparing a pot of his famous tea. "Got some rock cakes too, if yer hungry."

Harry, Ron, and Hermione exchanged smiles as they settled into their seats, grateful for Hagrid's hospitality.

"Now then, Harry, me lad, who've we got here with ya?" Hagrid asked with a wide grin, his beetle-black eyes twinkling with curiosity as he peered down at Ron and Hermione.

"This is Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger," Harry said, gesturing towards his friends. "They're my closest friends at Hogwarts."

Ron waved nervously, a bit overwhelmed by Hagrid's imposing presence but still eager to make a good impression. "Nice to meet you, Hagrid," he said, trying to sound casual despite his nerves.

Hermione, ever the picture of confidence, extended her hand with a warm smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Hagrid."

Hagrid's eyes crinkled with delight as he shook their hands in turn. "Well, it's great to finally meet ya'll," Hagrid boomed, his voice warm with genuine pleasure. Then, with a curious glint in his eye, he turned to Harry and asked, "Now, Harry, I'm curious, how did ya come to know it was me who brought ya to the Dursleys?"

Harry quickly fabricated a story, his mind racing to concoct a believable explanation. "Well, you see, Hagrid," Harry began, his voice steady despite the nerves churning in his stomach, "Sirius Black told me about that night. He said he handed me over to you along with his bike keys while he went after Peter Pettigrew."

Hagrid listened intently, nodding along as Harry spoke. "Ahh, I see," Hagrid rumbled, scratching his bushy beard thoughtfully. "Well, that's the truth, Harry. Sirius did give me you and the bike. It's all true."

Ron and Hermione leaned in eagerly, their eyes wide with curiosity as they listened to Harry's explanation. But before Harry could delve into further details, he sent a silent message to both of them.

"I'll fill you guys in later," Harry whispered into their minds, his words echoing silently in their thoughts.

Ron, who was already familiar with this form of communication, merely nodded in understanding. But Hermione, who had not experienced this before, almost gasped in surprise, her eyes widening in astonishment at the unexpected intrusion into her thoughts.

"Harry, did you just...?" Hermione began, her voice trailing off as she glanced around nervously, as if expecting someone to overhear their private conversation.

Harry shot her a reassuring smile, mentally urging her to keep quiet for now. "Later, Hermione," he assured her silently, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Let's focus on the present, shall we?"

As the conversation came to a pause, the familiar sound of Hagrid's kettle whistling filled the air, drawing their attention back to the present moment. Hagrid bustled about the small kitchen area, expertly pouring steaming cups of tea for each of them.

"Here ya go, now," Hagrid said with a warm smile, handing each of them a cup. "Nothing like a good cuppa to warm ya up on a chilly day like today."

Ron and Hermione eagerly accepted the mugs, inhaling the fragrant aroma of the tea as steam rose from the cups. The warmth of the tea was comforting, chasing away the lingering chill of the morning air.

"Thank you, Hagrid," Harry said gratefully, taking a sip of the hot tea. The familiar taste brought a sense of comfort, reminding him of countless visits to Hagrid's hut over the years.

Hagrid beamed at them, his eyes twinkling with pride. "Anytime, Harry, anytime. Now, what brings ya here today? Got something on yer mind?"

"Nothing particular, Hagrid," Harry began, his voice sincere as he looked up at the gentle giant before him. "I just wanted to see you. After all, you were my savior back then. You brought me safely to my loving family, and I'll always be grateful for that."

Hagrid's eyes softened, a warm smile spreading across his rugged features. "Ah, Harry, ya didn't have to say that. Just doin' me duty, I was."

"But you did more than just your duty, Hagrid," Harry insisted, his words filled with heartfelt gratitude. "You risked so much to bring me to safety. I'll never forget that."

Ron and Hermione exchanged knowing glances, their smiles reflecting the warmth in Harry's words. They had seen firsthand how deeply Harry valued loyalty and friendship, and his genuine compassionate nature.

Hagrid's chest swelled with pride at Harry's words, a lump forming in his throat. "Thank ya, Harry. Means a lot to me, it does. But truth be told, I was only doin' what Dumbledore asked of me."

"Dumbledore?" Harry echoed, feigning curiosity. "What do you mean?"

Hagrid's eyes gleamed with admiration as he spoke of the revered headmaster. "Aye, Dumbledore. He's the one who gave me the orders to fetch ya that night. Said it was important, he did. Told me to take care of ya like you was me own."

Harry feigning a shocked face, "Dumbledore did that?" he asked.

"Aye, he did," Hagrid confirmed, his tone reverent. "And I'll always be grateful to him for it. He's a great man, Dumbledore is. Best wizard I ever knew."

Hagrid's voice rumbled with emotion as he spoke of Dumbledore, his deep admiration evident in every word. "He's the reason I'm still here at Hogwarts, you know. After I was expelled, Dumbledore took me in as the Gamekeeper. Gave me a second chance, he did. I owe him everything."

Hermione's curiosity got the best of her, and she leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with interest. "What exactly does a Gamekeeper do, Hagrid?"

Hagrid chuckled warmly, pleased by Hermione's inquisitiveness. "Well, it's a bit of this and that, really," he explained. "I take care of all the magical creatures on the grounds, make sure they're safe and happy. And I also look after the grounds themselves, keep 'em tidy and all."

Ron's eyes widened with fascination. "You mean you get to hang out with all the magical creatures?" he asked eagerly.

"Aye, that's right," Hagrid confirmed with a nod. "Got some real beauties down in the Forbidden Forest, I do. 'Course, some of 'em can be a bit tricky, but I've got a way with 'em."

Hermione nodded thoughtfully, absorbing this new information. "It sounds like quite a responsibility," she remarked.

Hagrid nodded, a proud smile tugging at his lips. "Aye, it is. But I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Hogwarts is me home, it is."

Harry smiled as this conversation made his plans easier. He was silently thankful for Hermione asking that question.

"Since you know about the magical creatures, can you tell us why there is a three headed dog on the third floor corridor Hagrid. We accidently ventured there because we were lost and it gave us quite the scare"

Harry's smile widened as he realized that Hermione's question had inadvertently paved the way for him to broach the topic of the mysterious third-floor corridor.

"Since you know about magical creatures, can you tell us why there is a three-headed dog on the third-floor corridor, Hagrid?" Harry asked, his tone casual yet curious. He glanced at Ron and Hermione, who nodded in agreement, their expressions reflecting both curiosity and apprehension.

Hagrid's eyes widened slightly at the question, and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Well, now, that's a bit of a sensitive matter, it is," he replied evasively. "But I suppose I can tell ya a little bit about it."

Harry leaned forward eagerly, his curiosity piqued. "Please, Hagrid, we really want to know," he urged.

Hagrid sighed heavily, realizing that there was no avoiding the question. "Alright, but ya didn't hear it from me," he began cautiously. "That three-headed dog, his name's Fluffy, and he's guarding somethin' important up on that third-floor corridor. I put 'im there on Dumbledore's orders, to keep it safe."

Ron and Hermione exchanged puzzled glances, clearly intrigued by this revelation. "But what exactly is Fluffy guarding?" Hermione pressed, her brow furrowed in thought.

Hagrid's expression turned stern, and he shook his head firmly. "Can't say. It's somethin' that shouldn't be meddled with," he replied firmly. "Best stay away from that corridor if ya know what's good for ya."

The trio nodded solemnly, respecting Hagrid's warning. Sensing the need to change the subject, Harry smoothly transitioned the conversation.

"So, Hagrid," Harry began, his tone casual yet curious, "what other kinds of creatures have you taken care of here at Hogwarts?"

Hagrid's eyes lit up at the question, and he launched into an animated recounting of his experiences with various magical creatures. He regaled them with tales of hippogriffs, blast-ended skrewts, and even a run-in with a Hungarian Horntail dragon.

"Yer should've seen the size of that dragon, I tell ya!" Hagrid exclaimed, his voice booming with excitement. "Had a very hard time trying to calm 'er down."

Ron and Hermione listened with rapt attention, hanging on Hagrid's every word as he recounted his adventures. Despite the inherent dangers of his work, there was an undeniable sense of pride in Hagrid's voice as he spoke of his experiences caring for these creatures.

As Hagrid continued to captivate them with his tales, the trio found themselves completely engrossed in his world of magical creatures. Each story painted a vivid picture of the challenges and wonders Hagrid faced in his role as Hogwarts' Keeper of Keys and Grounds.

As the morning wore on, the sun climbing higher in the sky, Hagrid glanced at the clock on the wall with a start. "Well, would ya look at the time!" he exclaimed, his expression momentarily crestfallen. "I've got some other business to attend to, I'm afraid. Ya'll best be gettin' back for lunch."

Reluctantly, Harry, Ron, and Hermione rose from their seats, their minds still buzzing with excitement from their visit with Hagrid. "Thanks for having us, Hagrid," Harry said warmly, a genuine smile spreading across his face.

"Yeah, it was great hearing your stories," Ron chimed in, nodding enthusiastically.

Hermione added her own words of gratitude. "Thank you, Hagrid. We'll definitely come to visit you again soon."

With promises of future visits hanging in the air, the trio bid farewell to Hagrid and made their way back to the castle for lunch.

As the trio walked back towards the castle, Ron and Hermione couldn't contain their excitement, their voices filled with animated chatter as they discussed their conversation with Hagrid.

"Did you hear about the fairies he mentioned? I've only read about them before!" Hermione exclaimed, her eyes alight with curiosity.

"Yeah, and that story about the Hungarian Horntail was amazing! Can you imagine facing a dragon like that?" Ron added, his expression a mix of awe and excitement.

Their conversation drifted towards the topic of dragons, and Hermione turned to Harry with a curious glint in her eye. "What about you, Harry? What's your view on dragons?"

Harry paused for a moment, considering his answer. "Well, I've never actually met a dragon, but I think it would be quite an experience. Dragons are fascinating creatures, after all. It would be interesting to learn more about them and maybe even tame one someday."

Hermione and Ron exchanged alarmed glances at Harry's words, their faces going pale. But Harry didn't notice their reaction, his mind already wandering to thoughts of future adventures.

As they reached the entrance to the castle, Harry continued walking ahead, oblivious to his friends' unease. Little did he know, his casual mention of taming a dragon had sparked a whirlwind of worry in their minds, leaving Ron and Hermione feeling more than a little apprehensive about the prospect of Harry getting involved with dragons.

But for now, they decided to keep their concerns to themselves, knowing that Harry's adventurous spirit was not something easily deterred. As they followed him into the castle, their minds filled with thoughts of dragons and the endless possibilities that lay ahead.

As they entered the Great Hall, the trio was greeted by a sight that filled them with delight. The room was adorned with festive Halloween decorations, with jack-o'-lanterns floating around and bats swooping overhead. The aroma of delicious food wafted through the air, tempting their taste buds and reminding them of the upcoming feast.

"Wow, look at the decorations!" Hermione exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she took in the festive atmosphere.

"Yeah, it looks amazing!" Ron agreed, a wide grin spreading across his face.

The trio made their way to the Gryffindor table, weaving through the throngs of students who were already seated and chatting animatedly. As they settled into their seats, they were joined by Neville, who looked like he seemed to have woken up just now.

"Morning, Neville," Harry greeted him with a laugh.

"Morning, Harry," Neville replied, rubbing his eyes sleepily.

"Busy night yesterday?", Harry asked.

"No not really. I just found a good book on Herbology and I somehow read through the entire night", Neville grumbled.

Harry chuckled at Neville's response. "Sounds like you found something interesting then."

Neville nodded, stifling a yawn. "Yeah, it was actually really fascinating. I couldn't put it down."

Hermione, always eager to discuss academic pursuits, perked up at the mention of Herbology. "What was the book about? Anything particularly noteworthy?"

Neville's eyes brightened as he launched into an enthusiastic explanation. "Oh, it was all about the properties of mandrakes and their uses in potion-making. Did you know they have restorative properties?"

Hermione nodded eagerly, her interest piqued. "Yes, I've read about that! Mandrake restorative drafts are quite potent. They're used to revive those who have been petrified."

Neville beamed at Hermione's recognition. "Exactly! It's fascinating stuff, really."

Ron, who had been listening intently, chimed in with a grin. "Well, I'm glad someone's enjoying their studies. I think I'll stick to Quidditch and the occasional prank."

Harry laughed, nudging Ron playfully. "Says the guy who spends all his free time studying"

Ron chuckled and lifted his hands in defeat, "Fine Fine..."

Neville chuckled at the banter between Ron and Harry, glad for the lighthearted atmosphere. "Hey, there's nothing wrong with a bit of Quidditch and a few pranks. Keeps life interesting, doesn't it?"

Harry grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Couldn't agree more, Neville. Besides, we all need a bit of excitement to balance out the studying."

Hermione rolled her eyes fondly at their antics, but couldn't help but join in. "As long as you're not getting into too much trouble," she teased, though her tone held a hint of genuine concern.

Ron raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence. "Who, us? Trouble? Never."

Harry and Neville shared a laugh at Ron's comment, while Hermione simply shook her head, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

As the group settled in for lunch, Harry noticed Neville stifling a yawn, his eyes drooping with sleepiness. Harry flicked his hand, casting a small charm to dispel Neville's drowsiness.

Neville blinked in surprise as a wave of energy washed over him, banishing the last traces of sleep from his mind. "Thanks, Harry," he said gratefully, straightening up in his seat and feeling refreshed.

"No problem, Neville," Harry replied with a grin, pleased to see his friend looking more awake.

Meanwhile, the aroma of delicious food filled the air as the house-elves had outdone themselves for the lunch. The table was laden with an assortment of dishes, from hearty stews and savory pies to colorful salads and sweet desserts. Pumpkins carved into intricate designs adorned the table, their flickering candlelight casting dancing shadows on the walls.

The group helped themselves to generous portions of food, passing dishes around and engaging in light-hearted conversation as they ate.

"So, Hermione," Ron began between mouthfuls of food, "have you finished that essay for Professor McGonagall yet?"

Hermione nodded, a smug expression crossing her face. "Yes, Ron, I finished it last night. Honestly, I don't know why you always leave things until the last minute."

Ron rolled his eyes, his cheeks flushing slightly. "I work better under pressure, Hermione. You know that."

Harry chuckled at their familiar back-and-forth. "Well, whatever works for you, mate," he said, raising his glass in a mock-toast.

As the trio continued their banter, Neville joined in with a chuckle. "I have to say, Hermione, I admire your dedication to getting things done early. I always seem to be rushing to finish assignments at the last minute."

Hermione smiled at Neville's comment, a hint of pride in her expression. "Thank you, Neville. It's all about proper time management and prioritizing tasks."

Ron sighed dramatically, causing Harry to stifle a laugh. "Well, as long as someone in our group has their act together," he said with a grin, "I suppose we'll manage to scrape by."

With their bellies full and their spirits lifted by the cheerful atmosphere of the Great Hall, the group eventually decided it was time to head back to the Gryffindor common room.

Standing up from the table, Harry stretched his arms and let out a contented sigh. "That was a great lunch," he remarked, glancing around at his friends.

Ron nodded in agreement, his expression reflecting the satisfaction of a good meal. "Definitely, can't wait for tonight's feast. The lunch being this good, the feast will be leagues above it."

Hermione rolled her eyes, "Do you ever not think of food?"

Neville laughed. "Only when he is eating I guess"

With one last glance around the Great Hall, the group made their way out of the room and headed back towards Gryffindor Tower. As they walked, their laughter echoed through the corridors. As they reached the portrait of the Fat Lady, Harry gave the password and the portrait swung open to reveal the entrance to Gryffindor Tower and the group climbed in to the familiar common room.

As Neville bid them farewell to delve into his book, Hermione made her way to a cozy corner of the common room, a stack of books tucked under her arm. With a determined expression, she settled in, ready to delve into her studies.

Harry and Ron climbed up the stairs to their dormitory as Harry wanted time to think about him not being a Horcrux anymore and Ron wanting to take a nap. Once inside their dormitory, Ron let out a contented sigh as he flopped onto his bed, already drifting off into a peaceful slumber. Harry chuckled at his friend's ability to fall asleep anytime.

Harry went to his bed and climbed in and drew the curtains. He flicked his hand and casted some silencing wards before laying down on his bed.
