Chapter 42: Hogsmeade Again
As Harry, Ron, and Hermione materialized in Hogsmeade, they were greeted by the familiar sights and sounds of the bustling village. The cobblestone streets were alive with activity, as students and villagers went about their day, browsing the shops and enjoying the crisp autumn air.
"Hermione, I welcome you to the best wizarding village in the world", Harry said with a smile at Hermione. Harry led the way through the winding streets, his friends trailing behind him as they took in the sights. The quaint storefronts and cozy cafes exuded a charm that was uniquely Hogsmeade, and Harry couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over him.
"So, where should we go first?" Ron asked eagerly, his eyes scanning the row of shops lining the street.
Harry glanced around, considering their options. "Well, we could start with Honeydukes and stock up on sweets, or maybe visit the Three Broomsticks for a butterbeer."
Hermione's eyes lit up at the mention of Honeydukes. "Oh, I've been dying to try some of their fudge! Let's go there first."
Ron nodded in agreement, his stomach rumbling at the thought of all the delicious treats awaiting them. "Sounds good to me. Lead the way, Harry."
With a smile, Harry set off down the street, his friends close behind him. As they approached Honeydukes, the sweet scent of chocolate and sugar filled the air, drawing them closer to the colorful storefront.
Entering the shop, they were greeted by shelves overflowing with every kind of sweet imaginable. Chocolate frogs hopped about in glass cases, while Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans lined the walls in colorful rows. Ron's eyes widened in delight as he spotted a display of Pumpkin Pasties, his favorite treat.
Hermione wasted no time in selecting a few chocolate frogs, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I've always wanted to try these," she exclaimed, carefully examining the colorful packaging.
Ron grinned, already reaching for a handful of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. "You've never had a chocolate frog? You're in for a treat, Hermione."
Harry chuckled, amused by his friends' enthusiasm. "Don't forget to grab some Pumpkin Pasties, Ron. We can enjoy them later."
"Well since I was the one who dragged you guys out, so today is my treat", Harry announced, secretly he just wanted to spend some money.
As Harry declared that today was his treat, Ron and Hermione looked at him with surprise and gratitude.
"Harry, you don't have to do that," Hermione protested, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "We can all pitch in."
"Yeah mate, you don't have to do that", Ron said, who like Hermione was red in the face.
But Harry waved off their concerns with a smile. "Nonsense. Consider it a thank you for being such great friends."
Ron nodded enthusiastically, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Yeah, thanks, Harry! I'm definitely going to get some Pumpkin Pasties now."
With Harry's generous offer in mind, they proceeded to fill their baskets with an assortment of sweets. Hermione picked out some colorful Fizzing Whizzbees, while Ron loaded up on Chocolate Frogs and Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. Harry grabbed a few Chocolate Frogs for himself, along with some Drooble's Best Blowing Gum.
Once their baskets were filled to the brim, they made their way to the counter to pay. The shopkeeper, a friendly-looking witch with a twinkle in her eye, rang up their purchases with a smile.
"Is this everything for you today, dearies?" she asked cheerfully.
Harry nodded, exchanging a glance with Ron and Hermione. "Yes, thank you."
"So the total is 7 galleons and 4 sickles", the shopkeeper informed Harry.
Harry took out the exact amount from his subspace pouch and handed it to the shopkeeper before heading out.
"Now that we have our snacks, how about we head over to the Three Broomsticks for a butterbeer?" Harry suggested, his mouth watering at the thought of the warm, frothy drink.
Ron and Hermione agreed eagerly, their faces lighting up with excitement. With their bags of sweets in tow, they made their way down the bustling streets of Hogsmead.
As they approached the Three Broomsticks, the cozy tavern beckoned them with its warm glow and inviting atmosphere. They pushed open the door and stepped inside, greeted by the comforting smell of firewood and butterbeer.
Finding a cozy corner booth, they settled in and placed their orders with Madam Rosmerta, the friendly proprietor of the Three Broomsticks. As they waited for their drinks to arrive, they chatted and laughed, enjoying each other's company and savoring the simple joys of friendship.
When their butterbeers arrived, they raised their mugs in a toast to friendship and adventure. As they clinked their glasses together, Ron leaned back in his seat, taking a sip of his butterbeer. "Ah, nothing beats a good butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks," he said with a contented sigh.
Hermione nodded in agreement, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Indeed. It's the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring."
Harry raised his glass, a smile playing on his lips. "To friendship," he said, his voice tinged with warmth.
"To friendship," Ron and Hermione echoed, clinking their glasses together.
As they sipped their butterbeers, they fell into easy conversation, reminiscing about their favorite moments at Hogwarts and sharing stories of their adventures. The warmth of the fire and the laughter of their friends created a cozy atmosphere.
"So, Harry, any plans for the rest of the day?" Hermione asked, curiosity shining in her eyes.
Harry thought for a moment, considering their options. "Well, we could always take a walk around the village and see what else is happening. Or maybe we could head back to Hogwarts and spend some time in the library."
Ron perked up at the mention of the library. "Or we could see if Fred and George are up to any mischief. You never know what they might be cooking up."
Harry chuckled at the thought. "True. Either way, I'm sure we'll find something fun to do."
With their butterbeers finished, they paid their tab and bid farewell to Madam Rosmerta. Stepping back out into the crisp autumn air, they set off down the street.
Down the street, Ron suddenly stopped in front of a quaint little shop with a sign that read "Zonko's Joke Shop."
"Hey, do you guys mind if we make a quick stop here?" Ron asked, his eyes alight with excitement.
Harry and Hermione exchanged a glance, both amused by Ron's enthusiasm. "Sure, Ron, go ahead," Harry replied with a smile.
With a whoop of excitement, Ron dashed into the shop, disappearing behind the door. Harry and Hermione followed him inside.
Inside Zonko's Joke Shop, the trio found themselves surrounded by an array of colorful and whimsical prank items. Ron's eyes sparkled with excitement as he darted from shelf to shelf, eagerly examining the various products.
"Wow, look at all this stuff!" Ron exclaimed, picking up a box of Filibuster Fireworks and examining them with fascination. "I've always wanted to try these."
Harry chuckled, watching Ron's enthusiasm with amusement. "Careful, Ron, you might end up with more than you bargained for."
Hermione, meanwhile, looked around the shop with a mixture of curiosity and bemusement. She had never seen anything quite like Zonko's before and was intrigued by the assortment of novelty items on display.
"What exactly is the purpose of all these things?" Hermione asked, picking up a package of Trick Wands and examining them with interest.
Ron grinned, eager to share his knowledge. "Well, you see, Hermione, Zonko's sells all sorts of prank products – things like Dungbombs, Skiving Snackboxes, and even Puking Pastilles. They're meant for pulling pranks on people, like your friends or your enemies."
Hermione's eyes widened in surprise. "I see..."
Ron shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Oh, you know, just for fun. It's all in good humor. Remember Fred and George give you their inventions for your birthday"
Harry chimed in, "Plus, it's a way for wizards and witches to let loose and have a laugh. Hogwarts can get pretty stressful sometimes, so it's nice to have a place like Zonko's to unwind."
Hermione nodded thoughtfully, still not entirely convinced but willing to keep an open mind. She couldn't deny that there was a certain appeal to the playful atmosphere of the joke shop.
As they continued to explore Zonko's, Ron couldn't resist picking up a few items to add to their collection of prank supplies. With a mischievous grin, he selected a handful of Dungbombs, a box of Fanged Frisbees, and a pack of Nose-Biting Teacups.
"I can't wait to try these out on Fred and George," Ron said, his eyes dancing with excitement.
Harry chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. "Just make sure you don't get caught. Knowing Fred and George, they'll have their revenge."
Harry paid for the items and the trio moved out of the joke shop. As they stepped out of Zonko's, Harry glanced around the bustling streets of Hogsmeade, considering their next move. The afternoon sun cast a warm glow over the village, illuminating the colorful storefronts and lively atmosphere.
"Well, we could always check out some of the other shops," Harry suggested, gesturing towards the row of shops lining the street. "There's Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop, Gladrags Wizardwear, and even the Magical Menagerie."
As they strolled through the village, Harry and Ron reminisced about the day they had bought Hermione's birthday present from the Magical Menagerie. Ron chuckled at the memory of Hermione's delighted reaction when they presented her with the brown Wood owl, which she had named Casper.
"You remember how happy she was?" Ron said, a fond smile playing on his lips.
Harry nodded, his own smile mirroring Ron's. "Yeah, she so thrilled that she stopped talking. I've never seen her so excited."
Hermione listened with a smile, feeling grateful for her friends' thoughtfulness. "I'll never forget that birthday. You two made it so special."
As they strolled through the village, Hermione couldn't help but notice a small bookshop tucked away between two larger storefronts. A sign above the door read "Dervish and Banges: Books and Magical Supplies."
"Hey, guys, do you mind if we make a quick stop here?" Hermione asked, her eyes lighting up with excitement.
Harry and Ron exchanged a glance, both amused by Hermione's enthusiasm for books. "Sure, Hermione, go ahead," Harry replied with a smile.
With a grateful nod, Hermione dashed into the bookshop, disappearing behind the door. Harry and Ron followed her inside.
Inside Dervish and Banges, the trio found themselves surrounded by shelves upon shelves of books, each one filled with magical knowledge and adventure. Hermione's eyes sparkled with excitement as she darted from section to section, eagerly examining the various titles.
"Wow, look at all these books!" Hermione exclaimed, picking up a thick volume on advanced Transfiguration. "I've been wanting to read this one for ages."
Harry chuckled, watching Hermione's enthusiasm with affection. "Careful, Hermione, you might end up with more books than you can carry."
Ron, meanwhile, looked around the shop with a mixture of curiosity and bemusement. He had never been much of a reader himself, but he certainly wanted to try it as he had seen Harry's abilities.
"Hey, Harry," Ron said, turning to his friend with a hesitant expression. "Do you think there's a book here that could help me understand potions better? I always struggle with potions class, and I thought maybe reading up on it might help."
Harry smiled warmly at Ron's request, appreciating his friend's willingness to learn. "Well, Ron, there are certainly plenty of books on potions that could help you out. But you know what? Instead of diving straight into potions, why don't you start with something a bit broader? How about a book on the fundamentals of magic? Understanding the basics might give you a better foundation for tackling potions."
Ron considered Harry's suggestion for a moment, intrigued by the idea. "That actually sounds like a good idea. Any book in particular you'd recommend?"
Harry thought for a moment, scanning the shelves before his eyes landed on a familiar title. "How about 'A Beginner's Guide to Magic'?" he suggested, pulling the book off the shelf and handing it to Ron. "It covers everything from spellcasting to magical theory, and it's written in a way that's easy to understand. I think it'll give you a solid grasp of the basics."
Ron flipped through the pages of the book, skimming over the contents with interest. "Thanks, Harry. I'll give it a try."
With a smile, Harry clapped Ron on the back. "No problem, Ron. And if you have any questions while you're reading, feel free to ask. I'd be happy to help explain things."
Ron nodded, feeling grateful for Harry's support. "Thanks, Harry. I appreciate it."
As Hermione emerged from another aisle, clutching a stack of books to her chest, Ron tucked the beginner's guide to magic under his arm. He had not forgotten his resolve to be better at magic. Without the other two knowing, Ron was working hard. Whenever he was alone he would try to read his course books and learn as much as possible. Every spare moment he had, Ron would retreat to his room or find a secluded spot in Hogwarts where he could study in secret. He poured over his textbooks, reading and re-reading the material until it was ingrained in his mind.
He was driven by a fierce determination to prove that he was just as capable as Harry and Hermione, that he was not merely a sidekick but an equal. And though he kept his efforts hidden from Harry and Hermione, Ron knew that one day he would be able to stand beside them as an equal, confident in his own abilities and proud of the progress he had made
With a determined look in his eyes, Ron approached the counter, book in hand, ready to make his purchase with Hermione just behind him. But before he could even utter a word, Harry stepped forward, reaching into his subspace pouch.
"I got this guys!" Harry said with a reassuring smile.
Ron and Hermione exchanged surprised glances, their protests ready on their lips.
"But Harry, you've already treated us to sweets and butterbeers," Hermione objected.
"Yeah mate, we can't let you keep spending your money on us," Ron chimed in, echoing Hermione's sentiment.
But Harry waved off their concerns, his smile unwavering. "I already said today is my treat. Don't worry!"
With a grateful nod, Ron and Hermione relented, knowing that arguing with Harry was futile when he had made up his mind.
The shopkeeper, a kindly old wizard with a long white beard, chuckled at the exchange. "Ah, young ones," he said with a twinkle in his eye. "It's always heartwarming to see such camaraderie among friends."
Harry laughed, shaking his head in amusement. "Something like that, I suppose. Just ring us up, please."
The shopkeeper nodded, tallying up the total for their purchases. "That'll be 25 galleons and 9 sickles for the lot."
Harry handed over the exact amount, insisting on paying for both Ron's book and Hermione's stack of books despite their protests.
"Thank you, Harry," Hermione said, her voice filled with gratitude.
"Yeah, thanks mate," Ron added, clapping Harry on the back. He didn't like the feeling of Harry spending his money on them but he knew it was no use once Harry had made up his mind.
With their purchases in hand, the trio bid farewell to the shopkeeper and made their way out of Dervish and Banges. As they stepped out onto the street, Harry turned to his friends with a smile. "So, where to next?"
Ron and Hermione exchanged a glance, both eager to dive into their new books. Hermione's curiosity was piqued by the stack of books she had chosen, while Ron was secretly excited to start reading the beginner's guide to magic.
"Well, I think it's time we head back to the castle," Hermione said, her voice filled with anticipation. "I can't wait to start reading these."
Ron nodded in agreement, though he kept his own motivations hidden. "Yeah, me too. My legs are starting to hurt from all the walking"
Harry grinned, understanding his friends' excitement. "Alright then, let's head back."
He gestured for them to grab his hand, and with a quick squeeze, they Disapparated from Hogsmeade and reappeared in the owlery at Hogwarts. The room was usually deserted at this time of day, making it the perfect place to discreetly stash their purchases.
With a wave of his hand, Harry carefully stored all the packages in his subspace bag, ensuring that they wouldn't arouse suspicion.
"Thanks, Harry," Hermione said with a grateful smile. "I appreciate you helping us out."
"Yeah, mate, you're a lifesaver," Ron added, clapping Harry on the back.
Harry grinned "No problem, guys."
With their purchases safely stowed away, the trio made their way back to Gryffindor Tower. As they climbed the stairs to the common room, they chatted and laughed, eager to continue their day of adventure and relaxation.
Upon reaching the common room, Harry handed out the packages to the duo. Hermione grabbed her books and sweets and went to stash them away in her dormitory. Ron too went to stash his sweets and book in his dormitory.
As Ron and Hermione disappeared into their respective dormitories, Harry flunked himself down on the couch and took out a chocolate frog from his pouch. He proceeded to think about the day while he ate. It was rather a fun day, they went to Hermione's house, had fun at Hogsmeade. Overall a fun day, but Harry couldn't shake the feeling of dread, as if he was not paying attention to something. Something was clawing on his mind but he couldn't figure out what. He looked at the date, it was 11 October. Halloween was on 31st October, so the troll incident is still late. What was he forgetting?
Then it clicked his mind, in the books the trio had already made contact with three headed dog on the the third-floor corridor. What was the dog's name again? Fang? No that was the boarhound. Ah yes, Fluffy. Hagrid really needs to work on his naming skills. There was nothing fluffy about a three headed dog that threatened to bite your head of if you got close to him. Well I'll just have to make it so that we make contact with the dog soon. Maybe I can mislead them while returning from class so that we end up there...
"Well I'll make sure to do this on Monday", Harry thought.
