Chapter 670: 475. The Curtain Falls
One year later, Holy City Pandora.
This area, which had been desolate a year ago, now housed an immensely grand city with towering walls reaching into the clouds, variously styled high-rising buildings or the seemingly chaotic but intricately beautiful steam pipes throughout the city, and the streets filled with all sorts of unique mechanical devices and more.
All of this made the city seem out of place in a world that should have been at a medieval level.
Moreover, unlike when the city was first built a year ago with a population of only about 150,000 people, the current residents of Pandora have nearly reached 500,000. These were people from all around the world who could no longer endure the oppression of the Church and the imperial nobility.
Originally, these people meant to flee to the City of Sin but instead found this new city near the City of Sin which also defied the Church and the Empire; thus, they turned to this place. Once they entered the city, the technologically advanced sights shattered their worldviews. Additionally, with the doctrines of the Church of Machinery deeply resonating with them, they were quickly absorbed and became a new batch of workers.
In any case, everything seemed to be developing in a positive direction.
At the very center of Pandora City, few knew that there was a gigantic mechanical factory beneath the landmark, the Monument of Heroes. At this moment, in the factory's laboratory, a young girl in a nun's outfit was standing at a large glass window, looking down.
Through the glass, she saw a vast warehouse below that resembled a plaza, where countless units of "Adam" were neatly arranged.
Well, to be precise, these were the Adam Type II combat dolls; Dorothy had lazily used her own father's model again.
This batch of dolls was different from the mass-produced Adam Puppets from the war a year ago; they were newly designed and improved combat-specialized Mechanical Puppets, each a standard war-killing machine.
They were also specifically prepared by the Homebody Witch as Heroic Spirit Armaments for the first batch of soon-to-awaken Heroic Spirits. Since Heroic Spirits, in their Spectral Forms, were naturally adept at various soul attacks, their combat power would be absurdly high when combined with the physical destructive power of these combat dolls.
"Sigh, it's a pity I don't have much time left. Being able to muster such a Heroic Spirit Army is the last thing I can leave for Denisha," Dorothy sighed, feeling somewhat regretful.
The first act of Witch's Night was about to conclude. After all, Holy City Pandora had been nearly completed, today, after that grand celebration ceremony, their group of trial witches would also be exiting soon.
At this moment, in the Homebody Witch's view, a countdown with only two hours left was ticking away, marking her remaining time.
But for them, the end of this first act merely signifies the beginning of the second act, just as one game level leads directly to the next, with a loading screen that passes in a second.
However, for the NPCs in the plot, who knows how many years might span between the first and second acts.
This time, they were here as internal testers, arriving ahead of time, and the next act will probably be the public beta. By then, the large student contingent might arrive soon, and to accommodate so many new arrivals all at once, the timeline will likely advance to a later stage when the Divine King is awakening, but that, historically, would be centuries later.
Thinking that she might disappear all at once for hundreds of years, leaving only Denisha to deal with such a huge mess, made Dorothy feel quite guilty.
After all, Denisha's fate was altered by her, and morally and emotionally she should see it through to the end, but now she suddenly had to disappear for so long due to forces beyond her control, which seemed quite irresponsible.
Although Sophia and Michael from the Church side would probably disappear as well, and with Denisha's capabilities, she should be able to contend with the Church. But Dorothy still felt uneasy, so she had been trying to figure out how to leave more of an inheritance for her childhood sweetheart.
While the Homebody Witch was contemplating, someone suddenly came up beside her; Dorothy was startled and, upon turning around, saw that it was indeed Denisha.
"Ah, Denisha, why are you here? You're supposed to be hosting the celebration upstairs."
Seeing Denisha arrive, Dorothy asked somewhat awkwardly, as she had actually intended to leave without a goodbye since she also didn't know how to explain and say farewell.
"The ceremony will go on without me just fine, Mia and the others are helping to host it. And if I don't come see you now, I probably won't get the chance to see you one last time," Denisha shook her head and then gazed directly at her sister with some displeasure.
"Uh, how did you know?"
Dorothy was shocked. She never imagined that Denisha would know about her departure. The NPCs catching the player about to log off felt almost beyond the game's scope, like a bug.
But then, considering that the designer and GM of this game was actually the Good Sister in front of her, the Homebody Witch suddenly didn't know what to say.
