Chapter 45
Chapter 45 To Have Ulterior Motives
Upon seeing Lin Qinghua, Ning Tao realized he was worse off than the last time they met. His cheeks were unusually thin, but he was strangely energetic. He kept talking to himself, claiming to be the emperor and mentioning his beloved concubine and something like that. He looked like a man with a serious mental illness.
He did not calm down until Lin Qingyu coaxed him to drink a glass of milk with a sleeping pill.
Looking at Lin Qinghua, who fell fast asleep, Ning Tao wondered, “The ledger of bamboo slips said Sean was a new demon, but he was not in line with the characteristics of demons except for his madness. Those demons in movies and television dramas were all exceptionally formidable. They’re omnipotent, able to fly and get into the ground. But Lin Qinghua even cannot resist a sleeping pill. How could he be a demon?”
However, he had only seen demons in movies and television dramas, and had never seen a real one. At this moment, the “new demon” in front of him was so thin and ordinary, more like a patient than a demon, so he was confused.
Lin Qingyu’s eyes filled with worry, and she said, “Doctor Ning, my brother is getting worse and worse. I’m worried about him.”
Ning Tao collected his thoughts and placated her, “Don’t worry, I’ll cure your brother.”
Lin Qingyu’s eyes fell on Ning Tao’s face with gentleness. “I don’t know how to thank you.”
Ning Tao smiled and said, “You’re welcome.”
He didn’t need thanks. He only needed Lin Qinghua to fulfill the prescription pact for sins of evil intention. In addition, this was his chance to unlock the secrets of the new demon, for which he even prepared for a loss.
On the balcony, Lin Donghai and Fang Meiling whispered.
“I wouldn’t have allowed that guy to treat Qinghua if it weren’t for the fact that there was no news coming from the United States.” Lin Donghai sighed with a scowl. “But we have no choice. According to Qinghua’s condition, the treatment cannot be delayed any longer. We have to give him a try.”
“I don’t understand why a man like Ron is so afraid of him. He even called him Master Ning and sold us the land because of him,” Fang Meiling mumbled.
“Keep your voice down. Now we need his help, it will be terrible if he hears our conversation.” Lin Donghai’s attitude towards Ning Tao was totally different from the first time he met Ning Tao.
“Let’s go in,” Fang Meiling proposed. “Before he takes Qinghua away, we have to make things clear to him.”
Lin Donghai nodded, then opened the glass door between the balcony and the bedroom and walked in.
Fang Meiling smiled as she entered. “Doctor Ning, can we have a talk?”
“Sure, what do you want to talk about?” Ning Tao asked.
“You can take Qinghua, but you have to agree to Qingyu going with you,” Fang Meiling said.
Ning Tao thought for a moment before answering, “Sure, I’ll go along with that.”
“One more thing,” Lin Donghai said. “You have to promise me that you will definitely cure Qinghua.”
“If I don’t promise, you won’t let me take Lin Qinghua to therapy, will you?” asked Ning Tao dryly.
Lin Donghai’s face changed slightly, but his tone was still mild. “Doctor Ning, please understand our feelings as parents. A guarantee should not matter much to you. As for the money, don’t worry, just tell me.”
“I can promise to cure Lin Qinghua, but not to you. I promised Miss Lin that before I came.” With a pause, he added, “And I don’t want your money.”
“You don’t want my money?” Lin Donghai asked in surprise.
“You don’t want money… Then what do you want?” Fang Meiling unconsciously took a look at Lin Qingyu standing beside her, her eyes full of alert.
“I don’t want anything,” Ning Tao said. “That’s it. If you have nothing else to say, I’ll take you him away.”
Before Lin Donghai and Fang Meiling could say another word, Ning Tao went to the bed, picked up Lin Qinghua, and strode out the door.
Fang Meiling gave Lin Qingyu a push and said, “What are you looking at? Go with him.”
“Yes,” Lin Qingyu answered automatically and hurried after Ning Tao.
Lin Donghai said, “Qingyu, give us a call when you get there. If there is any progress, give me a call too.”
“I know, dad, mom, you rest assured. I’m leaving now.” Lin Qingyu followed Ning Tao out the door.
Lin Donghai tried to follow but Fang Meiling pulled him back.
Lin Donghai frowned. “What are you pulling me for?”
“Don’t you see that?” Fang Meiling asked.
“See what?”
“That guy doesn’t want money,” Fang Meiling said. “He’s aiming for our baby girl. He wants Qingyu!”
Lin Donghai let out a cold snort and grunted, “He doesn’t deserve our daughter! When he cures Qinghua, we’ll have nothing to do with him, and he won’t be allowed to enter our house again!”
“Let’s keep him dreaming,” Fang Meiling suggested. “Don’t let him find out we don’t want him to be with Qingyu. When he heals Qinghua, we’ll end his fantasy.”
Apparently Ning Tao didn’t hear their plan. He carried Lin Qinghua to Jiang Hao’s Buick commercial car. Jiang Hao got out of the driver’s seat and helped pull the door open. Then Ning Tao put Lin Qinghua on the couch in the back seat and secured him briefly with a seat belt.
While he did this, Lin Qingyu looked at Jiang Hao and said in a strange voice, “You… look so familiar.”
Jiang Hao held out her hand to Lin Qingyu and said, “I’m Jiang Hao and we did meet, at your brother’s lab that night.”
“You are…” Lin Qingyu seemed to remember something, but she was not sure of it.
“I’m a policeman,” Jiang Hao said.
“No wonder I feel you look familiar. I’m Lin Qingyu. Nice to see you, Officer Jiang.” Lin Qingyu shook Jiang Hao’s hand and added, “How did you and Doctor Ning meet?”
“We’ve known each other since we were kids,” Jiang Hao replied.
There was something changing in Lin Qingyu’s eyes, but it turned into a smile, “So you are childhood friends.”
Ning Tao poked his head out of the car door and shouted, “I’m done. We can go.”
Jiang Hao went to the driver’s seat while asking, “Do you want the front passenger seat or the back seat?”
“Is there a difference?” Ning Tao wondered, but he only stated, “I will sit in the back seat. I have to watch Lin Qinghua, or he might fall off when you brake.”
Jiang Hao’s mouth turned up slightly. Then she sat in the driver’s seat and started the car to the gate of the Elegant Luster Mansions after Lin Qingyu got in the car.
An hour later, the Buick commercial car arrived at a cadre nursing home. The nursing home had been around for at least 70 or 80 years. The buildings were mostly gray brick buildings in the style of the Republic of China. The trees in the yard were very big, and the huge canopies were like umbrellas on the roof, which brought a unique silence here.
Lin Qinghua was placed in a separate ward. As soon as Lin Qinghua was settled in, Jiang Hao said, “Miss Lin, you stay here. I’m taking Doctor Ning to meet someone.”
“Who are you going to see?” Lin Qingyu asked.
.”Sorry, I can’t tell you right now.” Jiang Hao cast a glance at Ning Tao, seeming to urge him to follow her.
“Well, Miss Lin,” said Ning Tao, “you stay here and look after your brother for a while. I’ll go with Miss Jiang.”
“Hurry back,” Lin Qingyu said.
Ning Tao nodded and followed Jiang Hao away.
Lin Qingyu saw Ning Tao and Jiang Hao off. A strange smile came over her mouth as the door closed. “You’re childhood friends? You actually wanted to tell me you were on good terms, didn’t you? What a manipulative woman. If you grew up with Ning Tao, would he call you Miss Jiang? Liar!”
Outside, Ning Tao caught up with Jiang Hao, and asked, “Who are you taking me to?”
“Liang Keming,” Jiang Hao said while walking. “He is the most outstanding life science expert in our country and the youngest academician in the academy of sciences. He is highly competent and greatly valued.”
“Why does a guy like him want to see me?” asked Ning Tao curiously.
“I don’t know,” Jiang Hao said. “You’ll know when you meet him.” After a pause, she added, “By the way, I have a present for you.”
“Why do you want to give me a present? What is it?”
Jiang Hao took out a medical license from her trouser pocket and handed it to Ning Tao.
Ning Tao opened it and took a look. It had his picture and his name on it. He was startled and murmured, “I haven’t even passed my internship, or taken the qualification test. Is it… a fake?”
Jiang Hao rolled her eyes at Ning Tao. “Will I give you a fake medical license when you have helped me so much? Don’t look down on me.”
“But…”
“No but, just take it. I told you it was a present for you,” Jiang Hao persuaded.
Ning Tao smiled and said, “Then I take it.”
The medical license was of little use to him as the owner of the Sky Clinic. However, since the clinic could not bring him money, he had to work as a roving doctor on the side. In this way, this medical license would be very useful.
As they spoke, they came to a door.
Jiang Hao reached out and knocked twice on the door.
“Come in, please.” A man’s voice came from the room.
Jiang Hao pushed the door open and Ning Tao followed her inside.
Behind the door was an office, and behind the desk sat a man in his thirties. He had pale skin, wearing a dark framed myopic glasses, with deep-set eyes, giving an impression of gentleness and intelligence.
On the sofa beside the desk sat an old man, who was thin and calm. He wore a white coat and a string of shiny adamantine Bodhi bracelets on one wrist. He also slowly turned four vermilion antique walnuts in his hand, making crashing sounds. The old man was supposed to be a highly respected and authoritative doctor.
Jiang Hao walked in and said, “Academician Liang, this is Doctor Ning, Ning Tao.”
Liang Keming got up, walked over with a smile, and held out his hand a few steps away. “I never thought Doctor Ning was so young. When I heard about you, I thought you were an old Chinese doctor in your fifties and sixties. Unexpectedly… Ha ha ha.”
Ning Tao shook Liang Keming’s hand and politely said, “Nice to meet you, Academician Liang.”
Liang Keming then said, “Let me introduce him. This is Chen Jun, the chief physician at the Military Hospital. He is extremely accomplished in both Chinese and western medicine. He’s amazing.”
Although Ning Tao was curious about why there was a doctor from Beidu, he still held out his hand to Chen Jun at the first place and said politely, “I’ve heard so much about you, chief Chen. Nice to see you.”
However, Chen Jun sat on the sofa and indifferently replied, “We’ve never met. How could you say you had heard so much about me?”
