Chapter 62 - The New Interpretation of Ragnarok
“Alright, let’s decide what we’ll do for the cultural festival! Owada!”
The class representative, Owada, stepped forward to lead the discussion on what their class would present at the festival.
“I’ll take charge. First, let me explain this year’s cultural festival…”
With great enthusiasm, Owada began his explanation.
The cultural festival at Kibogaoka High School lasts for three days. On the first and second days, all the classes set up booths. For the third day, the second-year students are required to perform a play.
The festival takes place at the end of July, right before summer break. Since our school is focused on academic achievement, the cultural festival is held before the break so that the third-year students can concentrate on studying for their entrance exams. It’s kind of like a final moratorium.
However, it’s already early July, leaving us only about a month to prepare.
“Now, let’s hear some suggestions for the booth! Anyone with ideas, please speak up!”
Suggestions started pouring in one after another: a yakisoba stand, a takoyaki stand, an okonomiyaki stand. All food stalls.
“Hmm, we could use something a little more unique. Any other ideas?”
Reina, who sat next to Kenya, leaned over and spoke to him.
“Kenya, what would you like to do?”
“For the booth, huh? Maybe a haunted house? Or the classic maid café?”
“Do you like maids?”
“I don’t think there’s a guy who doesn’t like maids. You’d look great as one, Reina. I’d love to see it.”
Kenya smiled as he responded, imagining Reina dressed as a maid.
(“Welcome home, Master…” Oh man, this is exciting. I want to punish her—or, no, I want to be punished.)
Seeing Kenya’s uncontrollable grin, Reina raised her hand straight up.
“Oh, Reina! Go ahead!”
The classroom fell silent.
Reina rarely spoke, so naturally, everyone was curious to hear what she had to say. All attention was focused on her, waiting to see what she would propose.
“I want to be a maid. I suggest we do a maid café.”
“…”
The classroom remained silent.
Reina’s suggestion was so unexpected that everyone looked shocked.
But then, a rumbling sound echoed through the room.
An earthquake? No, that wasn’t it.
It was the trembling of the boys, filled with excitement.
“A maid café with Reina as a maid… that means…”
The boys began to fantasize.
For some reason, they imagined Reina holding an omelette with ketchup in her maid outfit.
And then…
(“I’ll make it extra delicious for you! Here you go, Master! Open wide, say ‘ahh’ ♥”)
They pictured Reina feeding them an omelette with a heart drawn on it in ketchup.
“Uwoooaaaa!!! I’ll take it!!!”
The boys shouted so loudly that even the neighboring class came to check on the commotion.
In unanimous agreement, all votes went toward the maid café.
The enthusiasm of the boys, who looked ready to cry tears of blood if the idea was rejected, pushed the girls to agree as well.
“Well, it seems fun, so why not!”
“Yeah, when else would we get the chance to be maids?”
“I just hope I don’t get compared to Reina…”
And thus, Class 2-1, Kenya’s class, decided to run a maid café. With the heroic Reina as their maid, they expected great sales. In fact, they might even attract TV coverage, including from outside the school.
“Phew! That was a wonderful suggestion. I’m feeling quite excited. Reina might even surpass my 2D wives…”
Even Owada, caught up in the excitement, lost his composure for a moment but managed to regain his calm.
“Th-Then, the maid café is decided. Next, it’s time to decide on the play!”
The class’s booth decision flowed smoothly, and now it was time to determine what play they would perform.
“Something famous would be a fairy tale like Cinderella.”
“But doing something normal wouldn’t be very interesting…”
“And since we have a hero…”
Since they had the heroic Reina, everyone shared the desire to make use of that for the play. The classroom buzzed with thoughtful murmurs as they brainstormed.
Then, a lightbulb went off in one student’s head.
“How about ‘The New Interpretation of Ragnarok’?!”
“Ah! That’s a great idea!”
“It was the most popular movie this year!”
The name of a familiar movie echoed through the room. It had a huge marketing campaign, made hundreds of billions at the box office, and was apparently a film that brought the entire U.S. to tears. It was probably a Hollywood movie.
“Do you know it, Reina? ‘The New Interpretation of Ragnarok’?”
“I don’t know the story, but I recall being asked to participate because of work. However, I declined since I couldn’t act at the time.”
Kenya and Reina only knew the title of ‘The New Interpretation of Ragnarok.’
“Let me explain!”
Hearing their conversation, Owada jumped in to explain the film’s summary. Wasn’t he standing at the front just now? How did he get here so quickly?
“No spoilers allowed! I’ll just cover the general gist.”
Apparently, ‘The New Interpretation of Ragnarok’ is a movie that remakes an ancient myth into a modern version. It uses a ton of CGI, even incorporating real equipment to create intense battle scenes.
Ragnarok is known as the final battle between the gods. It’s the story of monsters like Fenrir and Jörmungandr waging war against the gods. The concept is familiar from novels, manga, and anime, though that’s about the extent of most people’s knowledge.
“And in this version, the leader of the monsters is called the Demon King, and the leader of the gods’ army is called the Hero.”
The story features both a Demon King and a Hero. In the end, the Hero defeats the Demon King, but the ending is said to be tragically sad.
The Demon King commands the monsters, while humans who were granted divine weapons by the gods fight the monsters. That’s the rough plot of ‘The New Interpretation of Ragnarok.’
“With Reina as the Hero, we’ll definitely stand out if we do ‘The New Interpretation of Ragnarok!’ Though, expectations will be quite high.”
“What do you think, Reina?”
“I’m not sure how well I can perform, but I think I can act better than I could in the past.”
“Oh! Reina has given her approval! Those in favor, please raise your hands!”
Everyone’s hands shot up. With that, Class 2-1’s play was decided. ‘The New Interpretation of Ragnarok,’ starring none other than Reina as the Hero.
“Alright, let’s go ahead and decide on the other roles too.”
One by one, roles were assigned. Though the script hadn’t even been written yet, the casting proceeded swiftly, as the play didn’t seem to have too many characters.
“Oh! I’ll write the script!”
A girl from the drama club volunteered to write the script. Her name was Saotome Ichika. Bright, cheerful, and with a voice that carried well, she was every bit a theater girl. She’d probably handle the acting direction too.
“Hmm, hmm, the roles are filling up quickly. Now, there’s only one left. There are some juicy scenes with Reina, so naturally…”
The final role needed to be assigned. For some reason, everyone turned to look at me.
“Then, Mikenju! Could you play the Demon King?”
