Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The Song Song Fruit
The Kingdom of Elegia's palace lay nestled within a forest. Unlike wild, untamed lands, the forest here was devoid of dangerous animals, making it relatively safe. As Luffy entered the forest, he noticed there were no fences or guards patrolling—an indication of the kingdom's somewhat lax defenses.
He and Uta ran one behind the other into the forest, with Uta leading the way, arms swinging with excitement as she walked. Suddenly, she burst into song, her voice echoing through the trees.
Luffy, meanwhile, slung his sword across his back, holding it like a staff in a style reminiscent of Sun Wukong carrying his golden cudgel.
Uta really is adorable, he thought, watching her sing. His gaze landed on the two rounded accessories in her hair, one white and one red, that resembled little ears. They perked up or drooped depending on her mood.
Caught up in the moment, Luffy found himself humming along, singing a childhood tune softly: "With courage, I fear no challenge, from summer's heat to winter's chill; I stride forward with strength, I can't be stopped…"
Uta's "ears" twitched, and she turned, staring at Luffy with a serious expression. "Luffy, are you singing?"
She pointed a finger at him, closing in.
"You're mistaken, Uta. I don't sing," Luffy stammered, suddenly flustered. He'd barely been humming—how had she caught him?
Uta leaned closer, her eyes gleaming. "I heard it—a song in some unknown language!"
At that moment, she nudged him into a tree, causing a strange fruit to fall from the branches above. Both of them reacted instinctively, Uta stumbling backward as the fruit landed right in her lap.
"What's this weird fruit?" Uta said, inspecting it. A crack had split the fruit open upon impact, and juice trickled from it onto her hands.
"Wait… that's a Devil Fruit!" Luffy exclaimed, staring at the peculiar fruit with musical note patterns etched into its skin.
The Sing-Sing Fruit—also known as the Uta Uta no Mi. Unlike Scratchmen Apoo's Ton-Ton Fruit, which mutated the user's body into musical instruments, this Devil Fruit from the movie granted the ability to draw people into a realm of song. The potential of this fruit was terrifying.
"A Devil Fruit? The kind that gives you special powers if you eat it?" Uta eyed the fruit skeptically. Its split skin and leaking juice looked unappealing.
"Let's bring it back to Shanks. We shouldn't just eat something like this," Luffy suggested. He wasn't particularly interested in Devil Fruits—he had no idea how to wield their powers effectively. Better to leave it to Shanks, and once they left Elegia, whether Uta ate it or not wouldn't matter much.
Uta nodded obediently but, out of curiosity, licked some of the juice off her hand before grimacing. "This tastes awful!" She looked at Luffy with disgust. "I thought it might make me super strong so I could punch you, but this is beyond terrible—no one would eat something like this!"
She wiped her hand on Luffy's shirt, and he looked at her in shock.
"Uta… you might actually be a Devil Fruit user now."
A Devil Fruit's power could be gained by eating even a small part of it, and it didn't matter how it was consumed. Luffy wasn't sure, but even drinking the juice might have activated the fruit's power.
"Eh?" Uta stopped, staring at Luffy. "Eh—"
"I've got superpowers?" She looked from her hands to the split fruit on the ground.
"Try using it on me," Luffy suggested.
"How?"
"Maybe… just imagine using it, like moving a hand or foot," Luffy guessed, unsure.
Uta pondered for a moment, then let out a soft, melodious note.
Suddenly, her vision split in two. One version of Luffy lay unconscious on the forest floor, while another stood before her.
One Luffy was right here, yet another was in her mind. Uta blinked, realizing she had entered her own inner world.
Giddy with her new powers, Uta marveled at how effortlessly she had "defeated" Luffy. Luffy was strong—far stronger than her physically. But with this power, she could knock him out instantly. It was as if he were in a dream, unaware of what had happened.
So, this is the power of a dream world! she thought in awe.
She began to experiment, humming a few notes, and instantly, the surrounding forest in her dream transformed. Strange creatures—roasted whole sheep walking on two legs—materialized and circled around Luffy.
Curious, Uta approached one and took a bite out of its side. "It even tastes like roast lamb!"
"Uta, you've definitely used your power!" Luffy's voice echoed through the dreamscape, snapping Uta from her reverie.
Realizing he was in a dream world with peculiar creatures surrounding him, Luffy knew the fruit had activated. This Sing-Sing Fruit was ov
erpowered, making Uta virtually invincible in a one-on-one fight.
