Chapter 229: Chapter 229: Aboard the Radiant Eclipse, The Ocean’s Most Beautiful Scenery
Aboard the Radiant Eclipse, the crew gathered on the deck.
The return of the others brought with it shocking news about their confrontation at the Holy Land Mary Geoise.
"Mother isn't really our mother? The nun resides within her?"
Carrot and Amande were visibly shaken.
"How could this happen? Then who… who is truly our mother?" Carrot asked in anguish.
As daughters, such revelations about their mother's condition shook them deeply.
"Of course, she's still our mother. As for the nun? We don't acknowledge her at all," Smoothie declared firmly.
To her, the truth behind their mother's state didn't matter. She outright refused to acknowledge any connection to the nun.
"Exactly," Carrot and Amande echoed after some thought. Years of familial bonds couldn't be dismissed by the sudden revelation of a foreign entity.
"But what about Mother?"
"What do we do if this nun remains inside her?"
"I don't know," Smoothie admitted, shaking her head.
Dealing with something as intangible as a soul? It was beyond them.
"Maybe the captain has a way," she added, placing all her hopes in Kuke, the one they believed could overcome anything.
Upon hearing the news, Boa Hancock exclaimed, "What? Someone dared to bully my captain?"
She grabbed the ship's wheel, ready to turn it around.
"Hancock, calm down. Kuke will be fine," Gion reassured the agitated empress. "He'll likely return soon, though we don't know in what manner."
Would he teleport back? Or would it be through resurrection after death?
Though Gion tried to soothe Hancock, she couldn't hide her own simmering anger.
"If Kuke dies again, I swear, I'll dedicate the rest of my life to making the World Government pay," Gion declared.
Kuke despised the idea of his crew experiencing needless deaths. Similarly, the crew couldn't bear the thought of him enduring the pain of dying repeatedly.
"We're still not strong enough," Stussy muttered with frustration.
Even after acquiring the Rumble-Rumble Fruit and crushing the New World's emperors, Stussy had grown complacent in her strength. But now, she couldn't help but feel dissatisfaction with herself.
If she were stronger, she could have stood by Kuke's side in battle, facing powerful foes together instead of having to leave.
Shakky lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and exhaled slowly.
"This time, it seems we've failed. No one anticipated the World Government hiding such a monster," she remarked.
Imu's power had left Shakky with a chilling impression—a god-like being she knew she couldn't withstand even for a moment.
"But at least it's better than Rocks. We managed to retreat unscathed," Shakky said, trying to find a silver lining.
The crew wore varied expressions.
Nico Robin pretended to read a book, but her trembling hands gripping the pages betrayed her inner turmoil.
"I need to become stronger," Kuina whispered to herself, wielding her blade with renewed determination. She resolved to grow as quickly as possible.
"Why are you all sighing? It's just one failure," Belo Betty said, displeased with the somber atmosphere aboard the ship.
The crew's downcast demeanor irritated her.
"Pull yourselves together! We have the captain. And me. One day, I'll make sure none of us ever dies again. We'll reclaim everything we've lost," she proclaimed, rallying the crew.
Her words lifted the heavy air.
"Exactly. We may have lost this round, but our captain's full of surprises. Victory is only a matter of time," another chimed in.
The atmosphere aboard the Radiant Eclipse gradually improved.
The crew fell silent, each lost in their own thoughts, waiting for Kuke's return.
Ten minutes later, the sound of a door creaking open broke the silence.
"Captain."
"Kuke."
Everyone turned toward the source of the sound.
Without hesitation, Hancock rushed forward, throwing herself at him.
Nico Robin subtly retracted her gaze and gave Kuke a faint smile from afar, pretending to return her attention to her book.
"What's wrong? Why do you all look so down?" Kuke asked, gently setting Hancock down.
"They think you were mistreated at the Holy Land," Yamato replied between bites of food, her cheeks puffed like a hamster's.
"And what about you?" Kuke asked, patting Yamato's head.
"Hmm…" Yamato tilted her head. "A little, I guess. But just wait till I'm stronger, Captain. Next time, I'll storm Mary Geoise with you."
"I'll be waiting for you to grow stronger," Kuke said, patting her head again.
He looked around at his crew, his gaze lingering on each of them.
"Mistreated? I wasn't mistreated at Mary Geoise," Kuke said with a smile.
Judging Imu's and Uranus' combined strength, he had initially anticipated a difficult battle.
But to his surprise, Imu had shown a softer demeanor.
In the end, it was she who had been on the receiving end of the "mistreatment."
"Huh?"
The crew stared at Kuke, puzzled.
"Kuke, what happened after we left?" Gion asked, unable to contain her curiosity.
In their minds, the scenario played out as a fierce battle between Kuke and Imu. They assumed Kuke would have been forced to teleport away or, worse, rely on resurrection after being defeated.
"What happened?" Kuke said, making his way to the deck's rocking chair. He sat down comfortably.
Robin instinctively picked up a cup of tea from the table and handed it to him.
Kuke drank it in one gulp.
"The tea today tastes a bit sweet," he remarked, setting the cup down. "Robin, did you use a different type of tea leaves?"
"Yes, it's a new blend," Robin replied, pretending to continue reading.
A faint blush crept across her cheeks as her gaze darted away.
The truth? The cup had been hers.
Kuke shrugged it off and casually recounted the events that followed.
"I demanded that Imu hand over the lives of two Elders."
The crew fell silent, their wide eyes fixed on Kuke.
"Captain, are you sure you didn't misspeak?" Belo Betty asked in disbelief.
"Captain, making such a demand is asking to get hit. Even I wouldn't agree to that, so how could that mysterious monster?" Yamato added, cheeks bulging with food.
"She agreed," Kuke said calmly.
"What?!"
Yamato's shout caused her to choke on her food, and she frantically pounded her chest.
"Why? Are the two Elders already dead?" someone asked.
Kuke nodded. "Dead. From now on, there will be three Elders instead of five."
The ship erupted in a chorus of exclamations.
"Two Elders… dead?" Shakky accidentally crushed her cigarette.
The thought of such an unprecedented event left her trembling.
"Why? Tell us why, Captain," they pleaded, their beautifully expressive faces gathered around him.
Each of their faces could rival the ocean's most stunning scenery.
