Chapter 20: The Truth About Vivi
Dawn crept over the island as Lucius performed his usual morning inspection of the dojo. His students lay scattered across the materialized sleeping mats, their bodies showing the toll of yesterday's intense training. Even Luffy, usually the first to bounce up demanding breakfast, remained curled into an impossibly twisted pretzel.
"Everyone pushed themselves too hard," Lucius muttered, checking his system status.

His mind thought about the conversation from the previous night, when Nami had approached him after dinner.
---[Flashback]---
"Sensei, do you have a moment?" Nami's voice carried an unusual weight as she gestured toward the beach.
They walked in silence until reaching the shoreline, where waves lapped gently against the sand. The navigator seemed to draw strength from the sound, her shoulders straightening as she gathered her thoughts.
"You've probably noticed we're not ordinary pirates," she began.
"The princess was my first clue," Lucius replied carefully. At Nami's startled look, he smiled. "Vivi carries herself differently. The way she speaks, how she analyzes situations... it's clear she's had formal education in diplomacy."
Nami nodded, her expression growing serious. "Vivi is the princess of Alabasta Kingdom. Her country is being torn apart by civil war, but it's not a natural conflict. Someone's been manipulating events from the shadows."
"The organization you mentioned before - Baroque Works?"
"Yes. Their leader, Mr. 0, has spent years destabilizing Alabasta. Creating drought conditions, staging attacks, turning people against the royal family..." Nami's fists clenched. "Vivi infiltrated their organization to discover the truth, but now..."
She trailed off, staring at the moon's reflection on the water. "The techniques you're teaching us are incredible, sensei. But Mr. 0... from what we've heard, he's incredibly powerful. Even with these new abilities, I'm not sure if we're strong enough."
Lucius absorbed this information carefully. A princess in exile, a shadow organization... it was far removed from his days teaching agriculture in Iowa. Yet the fundamental problem felt familiar - corruption and power crushing those who couldn't defend themselves.
"How bad is the situation in Alabasta?"
"People are dying." Nami's voice cracked slightly. "Not just from the fighting, but from hunger. The drought has destroyed crops, and relief supplies mysteriously vanish before reaching those who need them. Children are starving while Mr. 0 profits from their suffering."
Failed crops. Starving children. These words struck deeper chords in Lucius than talk of pirates and shadowy organizations. He remembered similar stories from his farming students - tales of corporate giants buying up family farms, of artificial shortages driving up prices while silos sat full.
"And the World Government? They do nothing?"
"They don't know. Or don't care." Nami kicked at the sand in frustration. "Mr. 0 maintains a public image as Alabasta's protector. The people see him as a hero while he secretly destroys their country. We don't even know his real identity - that's how careful he's been about hiding his true nature."
"How long?"
"Maybe a few weeks before everything explodes. The rebels are planning a major attack on the capital. If that happens..." She left the implications unspoken.
Lucius thought of his own death in that grain silo. How many Alabastan families would suffer similar fates if their food supplies were cut off? How many would suffocate under the weight of artificial scarcity?
"That's why Luffy and Usopp won't rest," Nami continued. "Even though they haven't mastered their techniques yet. We don't have the luxury of time."
"And Vivi? Why didn't she tell me directly?"
"She's careful. Being a princess in exile means never knowing who to trust. But..." Nami smiled slightly. "She trusts you now. We all do. The way you teach, how you care about our progress... you remind me of someone who once helped me escape my own cage."
Lucius remembered the system's loyalty ratings. Trust was more than just numbers - it was a responsibility.
"Where I'm from," he said carefully, avoiding mention of Earth, "I saw similar patterns. Different scale, different methods, but the same core problem. People with power using it to hurt those who can't fight back."
"What did you do?"
"I taught." He smiled at Nami's confused expression. "Knowledge is its own kind of power. I taught students about sustainable farming, about recognizing predatory contracts, about standing together against larger forces. It wasn't as direct as punching a villain, but..."
"But it gave people tools to fight back," Nami finished. "Like you're doing now."
They stood in comfortable silence, watching the moonlight play across the waves. Finally, Nami spoke again.
"Sensei... we're going to help Vivi save her country. Will you help us become strong enough to do it?"
Lucius thought of his current SP total - not nearly enough for the most powerful techniques. But looking at Nami's determined expression, he knew this was about more than just teaching fighting moves.
"A teacher's job," he said quietly, "is to help students achieve their goals, not set limits on their dreams."
---[End Flashback]---
The memory faded as Lucius heard his students beginning to stir. Despite his suggestion that the more advanced students take a break, he knew they'd all insist on training. Their determination had taken on new meaning now that he understood the stakes.
Opening the Otherworldly Shop interface, he began scanning items that might help against an opponent of a villain boss caliber.
[Otherworldly Shop Interface Activated]
==================
[Available Items:]
[Marine Tactical Vest - 100 SP]
[Origin: Earth, Modern Era]
[Description: Advanced body armor capable of stopping small arms fire. Includes ceramic plates.]
==================
[Ancient Seal of Protection - 250 SP]
[Origin: Unknown Dimension]
[Description: Creates defensive barrier around user. Single use.]
==================
[Weather Control Rod - 400 SP]
[Origin: Advanced Civilization]
[Description: Capable of influencing local weather patterns. Limited charges.]
==================
The weather control device caught his attention. In a desert country suffering from artificial drought... but no, the cost would drain most of his SP. Without the technique rebates from achieving 100% loyalty, he needed to be conservative with his points.
==================
[Desert Survival Kit - 75 SP]
[Origin: Earth, Modern Era]
[Description: Complete package of advanced survival gear designed for arid environments. Includes water purification, solar still materials, emergency supplies.]
==================
This had potential. Not as a weapon, but as a way to help people survive until the larger conflict could be resolved. The price was reasonable too.
==================
[Medical Supply Cache - 150 SP]
[Origin: Earth, Modern Era]
[Description: Comprehensive field hospital supplies. Enough to treat 100 people for various injuries and illnesses.]
==================
Another possibility. If civil war was coming, medical supplies would be crucial.
"Sensei!" Luffy's voice interrupted his shopping. "I'm ready for more training! Watch this!"
Luffy attempted Iron Body, managing to maintain solidity for nearly thirty seconds before deflating with a wheeze.
"That's twice as long as yesterday," Lucius noted with approval.
"Not good enough!" Luffy bounced back up. "Vivi's country needs us to be stronger!"
"The Great Captain Usopp never rests!" Usopp declared, though his knees were shaking. "My Finger Pistol will become legend! Though I once went forty days without sleep while training ten thousand—"
"Shut up and focus!" Nami's fist found its mark. "Sensei, we should all continue training. We can rest when Alabasta is safe."
One by one, his other students emerged, each insisting on continuing despite their obvious fatigue. Even Karoo stood tall, his wings spread with determination.
"Very well," Lucius conceded. He'd have to choose his purchases carefully later. For now, his students needed guidance to channel their determination effectively.
Looking at their resolute faces, he remembered something else from his teaching days - how his best agriculture students had worked hardest when learning meant helping their communities survive.
"Let's begin with group exercises," he said. "Real battles aren't fought alone. You need to learn how your techniques complement each other."
The system could provide techniques and items, but the real power lay in how his students would use what they learned. Looking at their determined faces, he had no doubt they'd find a way to overcome whatever challenges awaited in Alabasta.
For now, though, they needed to train. The rest would come later.
