One Piece: Sensei System

Chapter 14: Training Continues

After their morning training session, Sanji approached Lucius while lighting a fresh cigarette.

"Sensei, I need to head back to the ship for some supplies," he said, exhaling a cloud of smoke. "And from now on, let me handle the cooking. No offense to your survival meals, but..."

"None taken," Lucius chuckled. "I'm a farmer, not a chef. My expertise ends at growing food, not preparing it."

As Sanji headed out, Lucius took a moment to observe his students' progress. Three days had passed since they'd started training, and the improvements were remarkable.

In the far corner, Usopp was practicing his Finger Pistol technique. His face scrunched in concentration as he jabbed his finger forward repeatedly.

"Sensei! Sensei! Look!" Usopp called out excitedly. "I felt it! The air compressed around my finger!"

Walking over, Lucius noticed the slight distortion around Usopp's fingertip - barely visible, but definitely there.

"Excellent progress," Lucius praised. "Remember what I told you about precision over power?"

"The Great Captain Usopp never forgets!" he declared proudly. "Though I once led an army of-"

"Focus on your training!" Nami called from her position, where she was maintaining a perfect balance pose, her body seemingly weightless through Paper Art.

"Thirty-two minutes," Lucius noted, checking the materialized clock on the dojo wall. "Your control is improving significantly, Nami."

"It's getting easier to maintain the right weight," she said, shifting smoothly into another stance. "Though I still can't believe this is possible."

Nearby, Vivi moved through a series of rapid steps, her feet blurring with increasing speed. Not quite Shave yet, but getting closer.

"Your movements are becoming more fluid," Lucius observed. "Remember-"

"Ten kicks in an instant," Vivi finished, breathing heavily. "I can manage seven now, but maintaining that speed..."

"QUACK!"

Karoo's proud cry drew their attention as his Tempest Kick sliced clean through another training dummy.

"Impressive," Lucius smiled, materializing several iron dummies. "Let's see how you handle these."

The duck's eyes narrowed in determination, his stance shifting as he prepared to face the stronger targets.

"Sensei!" Luffy's voice called out. "Watch this!"

Lucius turned to see his rubber student attempting to maintain Iron Body. Unlike his earlier attempts, there was actual progress - his body remained solid for several seconds before deflating like a punctured balloon.

"Almost had it!" Luffy grinned, undeterred by the failure.

"His battle instincts are remarkable," Vivi commented. "For someone who seems so... simple-minded..."

"Luffy's not simple-minded," Lucius corrected gently. "He sees things differently, that's all. Some people are book-smart, others are battle-smart, and some..." he smiled as Luffy attempted the technique again, "some have a wisdom all their own."

"Wisdom?" Zoro scoffed from where he was still attempting to cut the steel dummy. "Our captain once tried to eat a rock because he thought it was meat."

"Yeah, but he also knows exactly when to trust his crew and when to fight," Nami pointed out. "Even if he is an idiot most of the time."

"Speaking of idiots," Zoro smirked as Sanji returned with his supplies, "the love-cook's back."

"What was that, moss-head?"

"Now, now," Lucius interrupted, falling back on years of breaking up schoolyard fights. "Save that energy for training. Progress comes in many forms - sometimes fast, sometimes slow, but always forward if you keep pushing."

He watched as Zoro returned to his steel dummy, determination etched on his face. Still no success, but each strike showed better understanding.

"Time for lunch!" Sanji announced, heading toward the materialized kitchen. "And proper lunch, not just coconuts and fish."

"MEAT!" Luffy's concentration shattered instantly.

...

As they ate, Lucius's curiosity got the better of him. "Sanji, you mentioned getting supplies from your ship. How far is it?"

"About 5 kilometers along the coast," Sanji replied between serving portions, expertly plating each dish with flourishes that seemed more suited to a luxury restaurant than a materialized dojo kitchen. "Not too bad with Moon Walk, though I still need more practice."

"How many steps did you manage?"

"Around fifteen before fatigue set in," Sanji admitted, lighting a fresh cigarette. "Each step launches me about 50 meters forward. Had to run the rest of the way." He paused, exhaling smoke. "Though next time I'll make it twenty steps."

"AMAZING!" Luffy shouted with stars in his eyes. "Sanji can fly now!"

"It's not flying, you idiot," Sanji corrected, kicking Luffy's stretching hand away from Nami's portion. "And keep your hands to your own plate!"

"But Sanjiiiii, I'm hungry!"

"You have three times more than anyone else!"

Lucius watched in amazement as Sanji continued serving the feast that stretched across two materialized tables. The cook had somehow transformed the leftover rabbit meat and fish into what looked like dozens of different dishes - each one arranged with artistic precision. Most were positioned in front of Luffy, who was practically creating a waterfall of drool.

"The meat from yesterday's hunt was quite good quality," Sanji explained professionally. "Perfect marbling in the muscle, probably from all the running wild. I used some herbs I found near the ship to enhance the natural flavors."

Taking his first bite, Lucius's eyes widened. The flavors exploded across his tongue - complex layers of taste that made him forget he was eating simple rabbit meat. It put even his favorite fast food joints back in Iowa to shame.

'This makes Popeyes and KFC taste like cardboard,' he thought, savoring each bite. 'How did he create this with just basic ingredients?'

"Is something wrong with the seasoning, sensei?" Sanji asked, noticing Lucius's expression.

"Wrong? No, this is incredible. I've never tasted anything like it."

"Of course not!" Nami said proudly. "Sanji's the best cook on the seas!"

"Nami-swaaaan! Your praise fills my heart with joy!"

"The meat tastes like meat!" Luffy declared happily, somehow speaking clearly despite having three drumsticks in his mouth.

"Don't talk with your mouth full!" Sanji and Nami shouted in unison.

"The spice blend is quite unique," Vivi commented diplomatically. "It reminds me a little of some dishes from Alabasta, but with its own character."

"QUACK!" Karoo agreed enthusiastically, carefully using a materialized fork with his wing.

"A chef must be adaptable," Sanji explained, his professional demeanor returning. "Working with local ingredients, understanding their properties... it's not unlike your teaching, sensei. You have to know what each individual needs."

Lucius nodded thoughtfully. "The comparison is apt. Every student is different, just like every ingredient brings its own qualities to a dish."

"Though some ingredients are pretty simple," Zoro smirked, nodding toward Luffy who was now trying to steal food from Usopp's plate. "Like rubber."

"Oi, marimo, respect the captain," Sanji said, though his tone suggested this was more reflex than genuine protest.

"Even simple ingredients can surprise you," Lucius pointed out. "Just like how Luffy's progress with Iron Body has been remarkable, despite his... unique challenges."

"YOU MEAN I'M AWESOME!" Luffy grinned, bits of food spraying everywhere.

"DON'T SPRAY FOOD!" Another synchronized shout from Sanji and Nami.

As the meal continued, Lucius marveled at the dynamics of this strange crew. From Sanji's incredible culinary skills to their casual bickering, everything spoke of a deep bond beneath the surface. Even the fact that Sanji could leave them to make the 5-kilometer journey back to their ship, trusting they'd be safe with a stranger, said volumes about their judgment of character.

The feast continued, punctuated by Luffy's attempts to steal food, Nami's disciplinary fists, Usopp's increasingly elaborate tales about his cooking adventures ("I once prepared a banquet for ten thousand kings using nothing but a single potato!"), and the ongoing verbal sparring between Sanji and Zoro.

While everyone ate, Lucius quietly checked his system notifications.

'Not bad,' Lucius thought, watching his students enjoy their meal. 'The more students I teach, the more points I earn. Though...'

While he could now teach additional techniques to those who'd reached 20% loyalty, rushing ahead wouldn't help anyone.

'You can't build a second floor before the foundation is solid,' he reminded himself, falling back on his teaching experience. 'Master one thing at a time, then move forward. Just like I used to tell my agriculture students, you can't harvest what you haven't properly planted.'

The sounds of Luffy inhaling his portion and Sanji yelling at him to slow down filled the dojo, making Lucius smile. Yes, they were making excellent progress, but there was no need to rush. After all, the best lessons were the ones that had time to take root.
