Chapter 12: Cutting Steel Like Butter

"The ability to cut anything?" Zoro repeated, his interest clearly piqued despite his skepticism.

Lucius walked toward the materialized sword rack, reaching for a katana.

'Ah, so that's another limitation,' Lucius noted mentally as he gripped the practice blade.

"That's right," he confirmed, testing the katana's weight. "Though perhaps I should demonstrate what I mean."

Several new training dummies appeared, but unlike the straw ones from earlier, these gleamed with a metallic sheen.

"These are made from the hardest steel available," Lucius explained. "Far stronger than ordinary training equipment."

Zoro's eyes narrowed as he studied the dummies. Something about this situation triggered a memory...

---Flashback---

A younger Zoro sat in the dojo, watching his master Koshiro demonstrate a cutting technique.

"Remember, Zoro," Koshiro had said, his voice calm and measured, "a true swordsman does not aim to cut everything in his path."

"But isn't that what makes a swordsman strong?" young Zoro had asked, gripping his wooden practice sword. "Being able to cut through anything?"

"That's what most beginners think," Koshiro smiled. "Tell me, if you had the power to cut through everything, what would you do with it?"

"Cut down any enemy in my way!" Zoro declared confidently.

"And if that enemy was standing in front of someone you needed to protect?"

Zoro's confident expression faltered. "I... I'd cut carefully?"

"Exactly. The path of the sword is not so simple. One must learn to cut only what they wish to cut, and protect what they wish to protect. This is the highest level of swordsmanship."

"I don't understand, sensei."

"One day you will. When you face an opponent who seems unbeatable, remember the strength of a sword lies not in its ability to cut everything, but in its wielder's ability to choose what to cut."

---End Flashback---

"A sword that can cut anything," Lucius said, unaware of the memory he'd stirred in his student, "is only useful if you know how to control it."

Zoro stared at him intently. The words were different, but somehow they echoed his master's teaching.

"What do you mean?" Zoro asked, his voice carefully neutral.

"Think about it," Lucius said, positioning himself in front of the steel dummy. "If you could cut through anything without control, you'd be as dangerous to your allies as your enemies. The technique I'm offering isn't just about power - it's about precision."

"Oi, oi," Sanji called from where he was practicing Moon Walk. "Don't tell me moss-head is getting something cool too?"

"Jealous, dart-brow?" Zoro smirked. "Worried you'll have more than just gravity to deal with?"

"Show me," Zoro said to Lucius, ignoring Sanji's retort. "Show me this technique that can cut anything."

"COOL!" Luffy shouted from his training spot. "Zoro's gonna learn something awesome!"

"The Great Captain Usopp once cut through a mountain with a butter knife!" Usopp declared.

"Really?" Luffy's eyes sparkled.

"FOCUS ON YOUR OWN TRAINING!" Nami's fists found both their heads.

Lucius stepped toward the steel dummy, practice blade ready. "Watch carefully. The key isn't in the strength of the cut, but in understanding the nature of what you're cutting."

[Technique Knowledge Integration: Active]

Lucius felt a profound change as the technique activated. The world around him seemed to slow down, every object emitting what felt like a subtle pulse - a rhythm, a breath. The steel dummy before him wasn't just metal anymore; he could sense its structure, its composition, the way its particles held together.

His grip on the katana's hilt felt natural, as if he'd held swords his entire life. The downloaded knowledge manifested as muscle memory, centuries of swordsmanship condensed into instant understanding. His stance shifted automatically into a perfect ready position, his breathing synchronized with the world's pulse.

With a fluid motion too fast for most eyes to follow, Lucius drew the blade and returned it to its sheath in what seemed like the same instant.

"Huh? Did something happen?" Luffy tilted his head.

"The Great Captain Usopp didn't see anything! Though I once moved so fast that-"

"Shut up!" Nami interrupted. "Sensei, did you actually cut-"

"QUACK!" Karoo pointed with his wing.

"No way..." Sanji muttered, his cigarette dropping from his mouth.

"Amazing, Lucius-sensei!" Vivi gasped.

The steel dummy remained standing for a moment, then slowly slid apart, cut clean through at a perfect diagonal. The surface of the cut was mirror-smooth, as if the metal had been separated at a molecular level.

But Zoro had seen everything. His trained eyes had caught every detail. The perfect draw stance, the blade's arc that seemed to pass through the steel as if it were air, the precise control that stopped the cut exactly at the dummy's edge without marring the floor beneath. It wasn't just strength or speed, it was something else entirely.

"That wasn't just a normal cut," he said quietly, his hand unconsciously tightening on Wado Ichimonji's hilt.

"THAT WAS SO COOL!" Luffy shouted, stars in his eyes. "Do it again!"

"Would you like to learn?" Lucius asked Zoro, the technique's knowledge still flowing through him.

As Zoro watched the flawless cut, another memory surged forward...

---Flashback---

"I left everything behind and set sail for one reason... to meet you!"

Mihawk regarded him with the same interest one might show an insect, pulling the tiny cross pendant from his neck to reveal a blade no longer than a dinner knife. "Unfortunately, this is the smallest blade I carry."

The mockery stung Zoro's pride, but his hands remained steady as they gripped his swords. "Three Sword Style!"

What followed was a dance of blades - or what should have been a dance. Every strike Zoro launched, techniques he'd spent years perfecting, moves that had defeated countless opponents, were casually deflected by that ridiculous miniature blade. Mihawk's movements were so effortless they bordered on insulting.

"What drives someone like you?" Mihawk asked as he batted away another strike that would have split a boulder. "Why does a weakling push himself so hard?"

"I made a promise!" The words exploded from Zoro as he launched into Tiger Hunt, putting everything he had into the attack. "I WILL become the World's Greatest Swordsman!"

Something flickered in Mihawk's hawk-like eyes. "The World's Greatest? Interesting." He stepped back, returning the cross pendant to his neck. "Very well. Your determination deserves a proper response."

The black blade that emerged from his back seemed to devour the sunlight itself. One strike was all it took - Zoro's trusted companions, his swords, shattered like cheap glass.

'Not here,' Zoro thought, turning to face the master swordsman with Wado Ichimonji, his last remaining blade. 'I can't fall here.'

"Tell me, boy," Mihawk's voice carried genuine curiosity now, "why face certain death?"

"Retreat means breaking my word." Zoro raised his white blade. "And that makes every promise I've ever made worthless."

"That's what defeat means."

"Then defeat isn't an option!"

The final exchange happened faster than a blink. The black blade carved through flesh and bone, opening a diagonal wound that would leave a scar Zoro would carry forever. But he never stepped back. Never retreated.

"Your name?" Mihawk asked as Zoro's blood stained the deck.

"Roronoa... Zoro..."

"I'll remember it. It's been years since I've met someone with your spirit." Mihawk sheathed his massive blade with practiced grace. "Get stronger. I will wait for you in the highest realm. As you are now, you're not even worth killing."

---End Flashback---

Without hesitation, Zoro dropped to his knees and bowed deeply, his forehead touching the dojo floor.

"Please teach me," he said, his voice carrying a weight that silenced even Luffy's excited chatter.

Lucius was taken aback by this sudden display of humility from the normally stoic swordsman. There was something deeper driving this man, something beyond mere desire for strength.

"Before we begin," Lucius said carefully, "tell me - is there someone you wish to protect?"

Zoro raised his head, glancing at Luffy, who had somehow managed to twist himself into a pretzel shape while attempting his Iron Body stance.

"Yeah," Zoro smirked, nodding toward his captain. "That rubber-brained idiot over there."

"Shishishi!" Luffy grinned, then suddenly deflated like a punctured balloon, flopping to the floor. "Oops! I think I did it wrong!"

"YOU THINK?" Nami shouted.

"The Great Captain Usopp's Finger Pistol technique would never fail so-"

WHACK!

Another bump courtesy of Nami's fist.

"QUACK!" Karoo laughed, only to receive a glare from Sanji.

"Oi, don't laugh at Nami-swan when she's disciplining these idiots!"

Watching this chaos, Lucius couldn't help but smile. The loyalty system's notification had surprised him, he hadn't expected such a quick increase. Whatever drove Zoro clearly ran deep.

"Very well," he said, helping Zoro to his feet.
