Chapter 9: Chapter 12: Carl’s Past
Kuma came back to his senses, hurriedly stepped forward, and took Ivankov off Carl, then found a chair for Ivankov to sit down.
The four of them sat around the dining table, tasting the fish cooked by Kuma. This fish was their only dish tonight, but fortunately, it was quite large.
Carl ate with gusto. This was the first time he had a hot meal since his time travel.
When they were in the Valley of Gods, they didn't have the energy to catch fish, let alone light a fire to cook. They could only pick up some wild fruits as rations.
However, the other three didn't move their chopsticks for a long time. They just watched Carl devour the fish with big mouthfuls.
After drinking a large bowl of thick fish soup, Carl smacked his lips, looked up at the three of them, and praised, "Why aren't you eating? It tastes really good!"
Kuma asked tentatively, "Brother Carl, do you remember what happened during the day? There was an electric current in your body. Is that also your Devil Fruit ability?"
Ginny nodded vigorously, stretching out her hands and gesturing, "Yes, yes! Even your eyes turned red. It was so scary!"
Ivankov remained silent, staring at Carl with his large, copper bell-like eyes, full of curiosity. He clearly wanted to know what had happened as well.
Carl was not prepared to hide anything from them and whispered, "That's because I remembered something. You all heard what that man said to me before we left."
Among them, Kuma was the most conscious at the time. He recalled, "I remember, that person said your surname was Figarland. Does that surname have any special significance?"
"Of course," Carl replied. "That last name reminded me of many things..." He suddenly paused, looking directly into Kuma's eyes before asking, "Kuma, if I were a Celestial Dragon, would you hate me?"
"Nani!?" x2
Ginny and Ivankov jumped from their chairs, staring at Carl in disbelief.
Compared to their reactions, Kuma was much calmer. He lowered his head, saying nothing. No one knew what he was thinking.
Carl didn't speak further, simply watching Kuma quietly.
The church hall was eerily silent. Ginny finally couldn't bear it anymore. Forcing a smile, she laughed awkwardly, "Are you kidding? Brother Carl, how could you be a Celestial Dragon? We just escaped from the Valley of Gods together!"
She didn't want to accept the truth, but seeing Carl's serious expression, she knew this was most likely real.
Carl looked at Ginny and softly said, "How could I joke about something like this? I am indeed a Celestial Dragon. Otherwise, why would Garling, the leader of the Knights of God, rescue a supposed slave from Charlotte Linlin?"
"That Garling is your...?"
"He's my uncle."
Tears welled up in Ginny's eyes. She ran to Carl, gripping his hands tightly as if afraid to lose him. She murmured, almost as if trying to deceive herself, "No, that's just a coincidence. Yes, if that's the case, why would they allow you to live in the Valley of Gods?"
Carl raised his hand, gently stroking a stray lock of Ginny's pink hair, before recounting his past in an eerily calm tone.
Now that he had merged with the remaining soul of his original body, along with its memories, he had relived the pain all over again.
He was born in Mary Geoise, the Holy Land, as the son of St. Figarland Darian, the eldest son of the Figarland family.
Darian's younger brother was Garling, who eventually became the leader of the Knights of God—the elite force protecting the Celestial Dragons. The position of leader was always inherited by a member of the Figarland family.
The reason why this family continuously held such an important role was because they were not just among the rare few Celestial Dragons with "awakened" minds, but they were also exceptionally talented.
Their skills weren't just impressive among the Celestial Dragons but also stood on par with the top warriors of the world. Garling's performance at the Valley of Gods was proof of this—he fought against Charlotte Linlin, Newgate, and even Rocks without falling behind.
The Figarland family's latest generation had two brothers: Garling and Darian. Though Darian was talented, he was always overshadowed by Garling. He lost every time they sparred, ultimately missing his chance to become the leader of the Knights of God. This failure left a permanent scar in Darian's heart.
However, Darian's true talents lay in his mind. He excelled in scientific research. Fascinated by the many powerful races in the world, he focused on the Fur Tribe and the Lunarians. He wanted to enhance himself using their genetics to become stronger.
But he feared death. His body was already fully developed, meaning even if he underwent genetic modification, the effects would be limited. Just when he was becoming discouraged, his son Carl was born.
The Figarland family strictly assessed the physical potential of their descendants, using specialized equipment to evaluate them. Carl's stats exceeded expectations. He was even stronger than Garling had been at his age.
For Darian, this was a dream come true. Cold and ruthless, he turned his experiments onto his own son. Carl's body was too perfect a vessel for him to ignore.
As a Celestial Dragon, Darian knew of the Op-Op Fruit and other ways to transfer consciousness. But he wasn't satisfied with that alone. He wanted to incorporate his genetic modifications into Carl's body, creating what he saw as a perfect, godlike form.
And so, Darian teamed up with Vegapunk to conduct inhumane genetic experiments on young Carl. No matter how strong Carl's natural talent was, he was still a child. The relentless experiments destroyed his body, and eventually, the experiment failed.
When Carl "died" on the operating table, Darian felt no sadness. Only madness and rage.
"Waste! Useless waste!!!"
Driven by insanity, he actually hated Carl for ruining his dream. In his twisted mind, Carl had failed him. So, he ordered his subordinates to dispose of Carl's "body," throwing him onto a slave ship bound for the Valley of Gods...
