Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Development of the Calm-Calm Fruit
The old man Garp had been sent by Sengoku to dig trenches in the Calm Belt, with Wright and Rosinante accompanying him.
Wright's role was to draw the attention of the Sea Kings near the designated sinking location, allowing Garp to complete his underwater task quickly despite the unfavorable conditions.
Rosinante explained that his Silent Zone could work to some extent underwater, though its effectiveness would be significantly weakened—the prerequisite being that the target was not fully submerged in seawater.
To facilitate the mission, Sengoku had specifically arranged for a bubble-coated diving boat from the Sabaody Archipelago for Garp. Rosinante would accompany Garp in the coated vessel, deploying the Silent Zone to minimize underwater disturbances while Wright provided additional support.
Near the deployment site, Wright was locked in an extended solo battle against a massive Sea King. He had already killed several giant Sea Kings, but since the location remained fixed, more of these creatures kept gathering.
This situation wasn't like the time they traveled on a warship with a seastone-coated hull, where they could pick off Sea Kings while on the move. Instead, Wright had to fight them from a stationary position. Even with his high efficiency, he was reaching his limits.
"Is that old geezer Garp done yet?!"
Panting, Wright cast a Holy Light Spell to restore his stamina. Gripping his sword, he charged at yet another attacking Sea King. This mission was exhausting—they were operating without the firepower of a warship, as only the three of them were sent on this secret operation.
Wright was aboard a single-mast sailboat slightly larger than Garp's bubble-coated vessel. Despite repeated attacks from Sea Kings, the area around his sailboat was fortified with multiple Lightcast Walls, leaving the ship almost completely undamaged.
"Ugh, that stingy Sengoku! Just because I showed off my newly developed defensive ability once, he's been working me to the bone ever since. Tactical types really are the worst!"
"Pfft!"
Nearby, Garp's bubble-coated boat surfaced, with Rosinante on board giving an "okay" hand signal, while Garp burst into hearty laughter.
"Ahahahaha! Wright, does this remind you of the training programs I used to arrange for you back in the day? You're handling these Sea Kings better and better, I see!"
"..."
Wright unfurled his Wings of Holy Light, grabbing the towing rope Rosinante tossed over. "Geezer, you sure love to talk. Hang on tight. Let's move!"
Wright fortified the coated boat and his surroundings with Lightcast Walls, then soared into the sky, towing the vessel behind him. In the Calm Belt, ordinary birds can't fly due to the lack of wind. However, Wright's Wings of Holy Light allowed him to move freely, completely ignoring this limitation.
"Hey! Hey! Hey~ There are so many Sea Kings here! Take one with us—what a waste~!"
From high above, Garp's exaggerated sigh echoed, while the giant Sea Kings below leaped in vain, trying to catch up.
After flying out of the Calm Belt and shaking off the Sea Kings' pursuit, Wright set the coated boat back on the water. He landed on board with a relieved sigh, ready to take a breather.
"Old man, is it all done? I didn't sense any disturbances on my end."
"Ahahahaha! Wright, let me tell you, Rosinante's ability is truly handy! Even when I unleashed a storm of iron fists, there was barely a peep of noise. Next time I go 'borrow' something from Sengoku, I'll bring this kid along for sure!" Garp chuckled as though he'd discovered a hidden treasure.
Rosinante broke out in a cold sweat. "Ahem... Garp-san, I'll have to decline. I really don't want to get involved…" Steering the boat toward the rendezvous point with the warship, he muttered nervously. Sengoku had kept his identity deeply hidden, but Garp was privy to it. If the two old men clashed, he'd be caught in the crossfire for sure.
Wright leaned back, crossing his legs and raising an eyebrow. "So, Rosinante, how is this even possible? Isn't seawater supposed to nullify Devil Fruit powers?"
"It's not that simple," Rosinante hesitated. "For instance, Admiral Kuzan can freeze seawater, and his abilities still work on it. Some Devil Fruit abilities are affected by seawater, but it mostly impacts the user's body. Whether an ability itself is suppressed depends on the specifics."
"My Calm-Calm Fruit has been developed to isolate vibrations—including sound waves—within the Silent Zone. It's not limited to sound but hasn't reached the level of stopping physical movement yet, as we once theorized."
"Ahahaha! That's already amazing, Rosinante!" Garp's eyes lit up as he listened. "Your ability could even counter that old Whitebeard's Gura Gura no Mi to some extent. If you keep improving it, I'd love to see his reaction. Hahaha!"
"Garp-san, you overestimate me," Rosinante replied with a wry smile. "Whitebeard is one of the Four Emperors—the world's strongest man. His Gura Gura no Mi isn't so easily countered…"
"If Whitebeard unleashed his power, you'd be digging your own grave by trying to interfere at your current level," Wright said lazily. "At best, you can block the shockwaves from spreading. The destructive force at the point of impact remains unchanged."
"Still, Rosinante," Wright continued, seeing him nod in agreement, "no wonder you got injured by gunfire back in the North Blue. Bullets aren't vibrations."
"Exactly," Rosinante sighed. "Achieving the ability to stop bullets entirely... that will take much more development."
"Brring-brring-brring… Click!"
Wright's Den Den Mushi rang.
"This is Wright."
"This is Sengoku." The Den Den Mushi mimicked Sengoku's stern expression, complete with round glasses and a mustache.
"Ahahaha! Sengoku! The task is all done! How's that for relying on the old man when it counts?"
Garp's massive face pushed into the frame, laughing heartily. "The location is absolutely secure—so secure even I've already forgotten it! Ahahahaha!"
"..."
The Den Den Mushi's face darkened, with a few exaggerated stress lines appearing beside Sengoku's glasses. His grudging voice followed. "Fine work… Though I expected as much. Your poor memory actually serves as its own safeguard."
"You calling me brainless, Sengoku?!"
"Hohoho… I didn't say a word—you admitted it yourself."
Garp erupted in fury, but Sengoku, well aware of his temper, cleared his throat and calmly pressed on.
"Listen up. I've received intel that the Germa 66, the Evil Kingdom of the North Blue, has secretly crossed the Red Line."
"What?!" Wright was shocked, and Garp immediately grew serious. Crossing the Red Line from the North Blue would bring Germa 66 to their homeland—the East Blue.
Germa 66, the most formidable military force in the North Blue, was a mobile kingdom of war experts and mercenaries once infamous for ruling the North Blue by sheer force. Its royal family, the Vinsmoke clan, even held the right to attend the Reverie.
"What are those guys doing in the East Blue?" Garp demanded.
"Reports suggest they intend to instigate wars, but their deeper motives remain unclear," Sengoku explained. "Wright, I need your mobility to investigate and ascertain their objective."
"Garp, since Germa is an affiliate of the World Government, your position limits your actions."
"…Fine. I trust Wright to handle it," Garp said after a moment of silence. "Wright, the East Blue is a symbol of peace!"
"I understand, old man. Leave it to me."
"The East Blue… It's been a long time since I've been back."
