Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Rebirth
"Save her... save her… save…"
Señor Pink sat motionless in his seat, Wright's words echoing endlessly in his ears. Those three words felt like an incantation, gripping the heart of the hardened man tightly.
"He really can do it…"
Coming back to his senses, Señor finally noticed Wright's condition.
"Turn away from evil and embrace good… that's hardly in line with your usual methods, Commodore Wright."
"People change… Theories that seem flawless always need adjustment when put into practice."
Wright paused, sipping from his glass. "In the past, I focused solely on punishing evil and promoting good, but I overlooked the possibility of redemption. The sins of pirates can't be erased, but were all pirates born as such? Before they became pirates, they rarely experienced anything good in life."
"Señor… you're fortunate to have met me; just as I am fortunate to have met you…"
"You have a chance to save your wife, and through this, I've gained a clearer understanding of humanity, of myself, and of justice—my justice."
"…The Navy is going to see the rise of a remarkable figure," Señor sighed. "What do you want me to do?"
"What about your young master?"
"Of course, my loyalty to the family is unwavering. If what you ask of me harms him, you may take my life here and now."
"…Doflamingo truly is a genius… Alright, I understand your stance."
"You don't need to betray your young master; you just need to provide me with some information."
"I need intel on a Devil Fruit. Given your young master's extensive trade networks, losing one Devil Fruit won't affect him much, will it? Moreover… I only need the information. If your young master gets to it first, I'll deal with it as the Navy handles pirates—without involving you."
"…Commodore Wright, you're already a Devil Fruit user, yet you're after another? It seems this one must be special," Señor frowned.
"Yes, it's quite unique… the Hobby-Hobby Fruit. Its user retains the age they were when they ate it. If consumed at the right moment, it's practically eternal youth…"
Wright winked at the bewildered Señor. "You're not the only one with a loved one, my gentlemanly friend. For women, what could be a better gift than everlasting youth?"
"Heh… So Commodore Wright has a sentimental side too… Trading our lives for eternal youth? This is a deal I can't refuse," Señor said bitterly, forcing a smile.
"Then we have a deal. I'll provide you with the Hobby-Hobby Fruit's whereabouts as soon as I have it. But I can't guarantee it'll appear in the family's intelligence network."
"Of course, it's just an extra safeguard. After all, your intelligence network is legendary, even among the Navy."
At the hospital bedside, Wright glanced at Señor. "You know what to do when the time comes? If I signal, step out immediately. When I call, come back quickly. Got it?"
Señor nodded repeatedly, sweat beading on his brow, his teeth clenched in nervous anticipation. "Will it work? When Russian wakes up… will she remember me? And wearing this outfit… Gimlet, he…"
"Enough whining. Let this great healer do his thing… Ahem, just watch."
Using his status as a Navy commodore, Wright had cleared the room of all medical staff earlier. Activating his Observation Haki, he confirmed there were no disturbances, then took a deep breath and stepped toward the bed.
"Eternal Flame."
Wright extended his right hand, and golden Holy Light gathered there. The shimmering energy transformed into flames cloaked in a delicate golden haze.
With a slight motion, the golden flame floated toward the silent Russian, gently merging into her body, starting from her head.
Moments passed, and Russian's pallor visibly warmed. Meanwhile, sweat poured down Señor's face as his anxiety peaked.
Wright's right hand summoned another orb of flowing Holy Light, pressing it gently onto Russian's head. "What's that saying again? 'A sage touches my crown, granting me longevity…' Ah, someday, perhaps."
Through years of study, Wright had begun to unravel the nature of the Holy Light's miraculous healing power.
Why was Holy Light's healing so extraordinary? It seemed almost as if it digitized a person's life force and stamina. No matter the severity of the injury, as long as the individual wasn't dead, Holy Light could restore their "health bar" to full, rejuvenating both their physical strength and injuries.
In principle, the Holy Light appeared to forcibly restore a person's body to its optimal state. Based on the moment the light was applied, it determined the recipient's peak physical condition and adjusted their body accordingly.
However, certain limitations persisted—for instance, severed limbs required reattachment. Creating new limbs might simply exceed its output capacity.
Refocusing his mind, Wright channeled the golden light into Russian's consciousness while using Observation Haki to monitor her mental fluctuations.
"The neural pathways are stabilizing… Brain damage repaired. Next comes awakening her spirit…"
With his Observation Haki honed to its finest, Wright detected Russian's spirit gradually resurfacing. A slight smile curled his lips. "This is looking good."
He signaled to Señor, who froze for a moment before breaking into a wide grin and bolting out of the room.
Thud!
A crash sounded from outside, followed by silence.
Sensing Russian's consciousness stirring, Wright withdrew his hand, taking two steps back to wait quietly.
Russian felt as though she'd been trapped in a nightmare—one so long and harrowing.
Her son, gravely ill, passed away when treatment came too late. Heartbroken, she sought out her husband's bank for help, only to discover… he didn't exist there. The truth gradually unraveled—her husband had lied all along. He wasn't a banker but a pirate. One of those vile, cruel pirates she despised…
The man who'd stolen Gimlet's life.
When he returned, she confronted him but never received an honest answer.
"Do you think I'm an idiot?!"
In her anger, she slapped him and ran out into a storm. A sudden pain struck, and everything went black.
Today felt different.
In the silent void, threads of golden light penetrated the darkness. Warm and purifying, the radiance touched her soul.
Gimlet… is this the end? Am I coming to see you? And you, Pink… I no longer hate you. But why, even at the last, couldn't you tell me the truth?
The golden light pierced the shadows, filling her with clarity. She could feel it—her body.
"Ah… This familiar sensation… Am I…"
Russian slowly opened her eyes. Light poured in, flooding her vision.
A hospital room? Was she lying in bed? What had happened…
As she prepared to look around, a gentle, youthful voice spoke beside her.
"Hello, Ms. Russian. Welcome back to the land of the living."
