Chapter 60: Chapter 60: An Unexpected Encounter
"Hey, you lot." Wright's voice carried an edge of amusement as he observed the two kids and a bear—captured by none other than the bad kid among bad kids, a professionally trained bad kid—Law. The trio, entirely immersed in their own lively chatter, had been blatantly ignoring Wright for a while now.
"...Ah, Mr. Wright!" Law, who had just reclaimed some of his lost confidence among his peers (as the average age of this odd group was roughly the same as his), suddenly remembered the terror of being under Wright's dominance.
"Come here, I'll introduce you—this is Commodore Wright of the Marine Headquarters!" Law gestured for Shachi, Penguin, and Bepo to gather, whispering under his breath, "Commodore Wright is a good guy, but his personality is... less than ideal. He's the kind of guy who would hang you up and beat you!"
Law watched with satisfaction as the two kids and the bear grew visibly horrified. Leading them over to Wright, he was greeted by Wright's bright, smiling expression.
"Huh? I think I heard someone say my personality is... less than ideal?" Wright cracked his knuckles, the sound echoing ominously.
"Hahaha, no way, Mr. Wright... What are you talking about? Let me introduce them to you. These are Shachi, Penguin, and Bepo... They're currently homeless and, uh, want to follow me..."
"Oh ho, already recruiting a crew, are you, Law?" Wright teased, his tone amused.
"Still... you can't even take care of yourself. How do you plan to improve with a few subordinates dragging you down?" Wright's curious gaze fell on the trembling trio before him.
"Well..." Law froze, realizing he hadn't considered the logistics. At least under Doflamingo and Rosinante, he never had to worry about meals.
"All right, first things first—we're leaving Minion Island and heading to Swallow Island." Wright pondered for a moment. With four of them, flying Law there as originally planned was no longer feasible.
"Are you familiar with the area? Go find a boat, and I'll take you all away."
Shachi and Penguin quickly nodded, rushing off to find a vessel. Wright turned to Bepo. "Your name's Bepo, right?"
"Yes, sir!" Bepo replied enthusiastically.
"I think I've seen a bear like you somewhere before..." Wright mused.
Bepo's eyes lit up. "Really? Mr. Wright, have you seen someone like me? I'm looking for my brother—he's also a polar bear!"
Wright nodded. "That might be it. However, there are some things you need to hear first.
"If I'm not mistaken, your brother's name is... Zepo?"
"Yes! That's him! Have you met him?"
"I've seen... his wanted poster."
"..."
Bepo froze in shock, while Law looked utterly dumbfounded. Wright continued thoughtfully, "Two years ago, Marine Headquarters received wanted posters for three members of the Mink Tribe—Bepo's kind—who formed a pirate crew. I believe it included a polar bear, a leopard, and a lion."
"They're dangerous. You don't need to know the specifics yet, but here's some advice: until you're strong enough, don't try to find them or reveal any connection to them. Otherwise, you'll be in grave danger."
"But..." Bepo hesitated, only for Law to interrupt. "Enough, Bepo. If Mr. Wright says so, he must have a good reason. We're too weak to handle this right now."
"I... I understand. Sorry..." Bepo sank into silent despair.
After Shachi and Penguin returned with a small boat, Wright escorted the group to Swallow Island.
A hearty meal later, the group sat back, thoroughly stuffed. Law, mentally and physically drained after days of fear and shock, was exhausted. Shachi and Penguin had been busy, and Bepo had endured the brunt of their antics—everyone was worn out.
Wright rented a room at an inn and began guiding Law on basic knowledge about Devil Fruits. He also prepared to help him expel the Amber Lead poisoning from his body.
The Ope Ope no Mi's powers were extraordinarily unique, allowing the user to cut, exchange, and reassemble anything within a designated space, even swapping souls. Its versatility bordered on absurd.
Although mastering its abilities required time and practice, Law could grasp the basics immediately upon eating the fruit. With Wright's help, Law successfully expelled the Amber Lead poisoning from his body, though the process left him utterly exhausted.
"First, think about how to survive," Wright advised. "Law, that's your primary concern."
"In future training, remember this: the Ope Ope no Mi is a rare spatial-type fruit. While it can heal, its combat potential is immense. However, activating its powers consumes enormous stamina. Overextending will cost you your lifespan. So, your training must focus on building a solid foundation of endurance."
Law nodded solemnly, his newfound confidence tempered by Wright's warnings. He now understood the life-threatening consequences of overusing his Devil Fruit powers.
"If I hadn't healed your injuries and restored your strength, expelling the Amber Lead would've taken much longer," Wright added.
"For now, Swallow Island is under Marine surveillance. Doflamingo won't dare come here, so it's relatively safe. But don't let your guard down. Practice your Devil Fruit abilities in secret—until the day you're strong enough to protect yourself."
"With that, my week of protecting you is over." Wright stood, his tone final.
"I'll leave soon to rejoin Vice Admiral Tsuru and return to Headquarters. The rest is up to you."
He placed a pouch of money on the table, roughly 5 million berries. "This is some starting capital. How you use it is your decision. Just make sure you keep it safe."
"One more thing... don't fall into evil. Even if you become a pirate, do not commit atrocities. Otherwise, I'll personally take care of you on Rosinante's behalf."
With that, Wright walked out of the inn. His figure flickered once before disappearing entirely.
Law sat silently for a moment, staring at the pouch of money. Sniffling, he slung it over his shoulder and headed back. From now on, he would rely on himself—and his three companions.
Someday, he would properly thank that awful Commodore Wright.
...
Wright wandered through Swallow Island, his mind buzzing. This was the first time he had drastically altered the fate of a key character.
With Rosinante alive, the destinies of both Doflamingo and Law would undoubtedly shift.
"I wonder what the future holds... it's bound to be interesting."
As a precaution, Wright decided to scan the town for any suspicious individuals to ensure Law's safety.
Activating his Observation Haki, Wright methodically checked each part of the town—east, west, south, and... wait.
His senses jolted. In the northern part of town was someone who shouldn't be here: Señor Pink of the Donquixote Family's Diamond Army.
At this point in time, Señor Pink was tall and fit, dressed in a suit and sunglasses—oozing a gentlemanly charm.
"What's he doing here? The Marines haven't lifted surveillance on this island. Is he looking to get caught? Every Marine in the North Blue knows the Donquixote Family's wanted posters!"
Wright frowned. Something felt off. Señor Pink's emotions were unusual, and there was a faint, indistinct presence near him—too weak for his Observation Haki to clearly identify.
Steeling himself, Wright strode toward the source of the disturbance. It was time to find out what was going on.
