Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Heart-wrenching
The battle between Wright and Vergo shattered everything around them. The tremendous clash of Haki generated gusts of wind, providing an exceptionally clear line of sight—snowflakes couldn't even come close!
Law poked his head out from behind a relatively intact wall, staring wide-eyed at the battle between Wright and Vergo not far ahead.
Law had witnessed Vergo's strength before—Rosinante, even when wounded from a gunshot, was a solid mid-level officer at headquarters, yet he was helpless against Vergo, getting thoroughly beaten. Law himself had been knocked unconscious by a single punch from Vergo!
From Rosinante, Law learned that Vergo had been one of the top combatants in the family before leaving to carry out missions. As for the other top fighters—the three "highest-ranking officers"—they had all been Law's mentors! He fully understood just how strong they were.
"This vicious Commodore... Mr. Wright is so strong!" Law couldn't help but have some thoughts of his own: "Corazon... Was Rosinante really in the same class as him...?"
Still in shock, Law watched as the battle between Wright and Vergo neared its conclusion.
Vergo, holding onto the belief that "I can win!", only he knew what his reasoning was... but according to Wright's judgment—he was dreaming!
With all his enhancements maxed out, Wright overwhelmed Vergo in every aspect—strength, speed, and reflexes—while the holy fire continually wore down Vergo's Armament Haki. Even his Observation Haki, enhanced by Wright's "special effect" Observation Haki, was suppressed completely!
But Vergo had no way out—defeat meant death! Therefore, Vergo felt that he had unleashed his peak power in this battle.
"Boom—!"
A single "Judgment Strike" from Wright sent Vergo flying, causing him to briefly stiffen. Wright mixed the Judgment Strike into an ordinary storm kick and a sweeping motion. By the time Vergo sensed something was wrong, it was too late to react.
"Lightspeed!" Wright appeared in front of the frozen Vergo like teleportation, both hands gripping his sword as he brought it down!
"Damn it... Move!" Vergo roared internally, desperately using his Observation Haki to predict where the long sword would land, coating it with Armament Haki. However, it was still too late; his Armament Haki didn't concentrate in time.
"Shua—!"
A deep gash appeared in Vergo's abdomen, almost splitting him in half. The weak Armament Haki failed to protect him from Wright's strike, and the "bloodless" holy fire began to burn the wound, causing immense pain.
As the stiffness wore off, the overwhelming pain gave Vergo a superhuman reflex, and before he was slammed into the ground by Wright, he slapped "Ashes" with both hands, quickly freeing himself from the long sword and retreating.
The holy fire continued to burn at his abdominal wound, and Vergo knelt, covering the injury with Armament Haki, causing the gold-red flames to reluctantly extinguish.
"How do you feel?" Wright looked around. The once pristine town was now completely destroyed, with a wide-open view. He could see Law's spotted hat trembling in the distance—was he scared? Or frozen?
"Truly a monster... No wonder he's the fourth disciple personally chosen by Admiral Zephyr..." Vergo panted, his abdominal wound drastically reducing his speed and stamina. "But it's not over. Even if I die, I won't fall into your hands. I will never reveal any information about Doflamingo!"
"I am the first 'Corazon,' and I am not like that traitor Rosinante!"
"..."
Wright's expression grew colder as he gazed at the struggling Vergo. "I forgot to mention."
"I received a secret order from Admiral Sengoku of the Navy Headquarters."
"To secretly execute the undercover agent of the Donquixote family, Red Heart Vergo—not arrest, not interrogate... but execute!"
"Sengoku...?" Vergo lifted his head. His black sunglasses hid his thoughts, but the way he gritted his teeth betrayed his anger and disbelief. "How could the 'Buddha of Sengoku' give the order to execute me!"
"Your Qi cultivation isn't enough~" Wright slowly walked toward Virgo, speaking with a hint of mockery. "After over ten years, you could die for Doflamingo with a smile, but right now... you're still too green."
"Final Judgment!" A massive golden slash flew toward Vergo. He put up his best defense, but ultimately couldn't stop the blood that erupted from his mouth.
"Lightspeed!" Wright appeared beside Vergo immediately after the slash, sweeping a leg through the air: "Judgment Strike!"
The wound from the slash caused Vergo to stiffen once again, but this time, he didn't have the energy to defend with his Armament Haki!
Wright, gripping his sword with both hands, chased after the flying Vergo, stabbing "Ashes" vertically from above, driving it straight through him and pinning him to the ground!
"Poof!"
Blood spewed from Vergo's mouth. His stiff state ended, but this time, he couldn't escape the blade of "Ashes."
The gold-red holy fire burned both inside and outside Vergo's body, and despite his iron-willed self, he couldn't stop himself from letting out a low, agonizing howl.
"Doflamingo killed Rosinante because of you," Wright said slowly, standing tall as Vergo twitched beneath his feet.
"He didn't even glance at Rosinante's state before leaving, which gave Rosinante a chance to survive—because of you, Doflamingo became the embodiment of 'evil'—the others don't know, but I know very well. Oh, Rosinante doesn't even know~"
"String-String Fruit, Golden Pistol, hmph... you five are the real murderers of Donquixote Homing. You're the ones who pushed Doflamingo completely into darkness, the ones who made Rosinante lose his father and brother—the moment Doflamingo was incited by you and killed Homing, Rosinante's brother was already dead!"
"Rosinante's death, killed by his own brother's gun—the very gun that killed his father—was supposed to be the turning point for Doflamingo's full descent into darkness. You were all waiting for it... but with me here, Rosinante didn't die!"
"Who... who are you...?" Virgo could barely speak, but every word Wright said felt like a massive stone being dropped into his heart—only they knew that secret! No one else!
"You don't need to know... Soon, Doflamingo won't be able to contact you. With his intelligence, he'll quickly guess that Rosinante didn't die. He'll make a mistake, and one by one, you will all be held accountable by Rosinante—I will help him."
"Dressrosa... don't worry about it either!"
"What you've done is a complete violation of the basic human conscience... To achieve my goal, this kind of darkness must be purified!"
"Your... goal?"
"World peace."
"In the name of Holy Light, go to hell and repent!"
"Poof!"
...
"Law, it's time to go. The mission's complete, we need to leave," Wright said as he found Law behind the wall. The boy was curled up, crying uncontrollably.
"W-Wright-san, you... you killed Vergo..."
"Yeah, a clean break, his soul has gone to the underworld, and even I can't bring him back."
"Ugh... thank you... thank you... Vergo... I almost... almost got Corazon killed... Rosinante..."
Wright picked up Law, tucking him under his arm, and slowly walked toward the edge of the island. "Alright, it's all in the past now..."
"Now, it's time to talk about you."
