Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Daddy's Got You Covered!
As an Admiral of the Navy, Zéphyr's combat power was beyond doubt. Even the pirates targeted during the boot camp's live training exercises—those who had ventured near the New World—remained mostly confined to Paradise. Encountering a pirate with a bounty exceeding 100 million berries was a rare occurrence.
Pirate crews with bounties in the tens of millions were nothing to Zéphyr. Alone, he could annihilate an entire fleet. However, as the boot camp's instructor, Zéphyr couldn't simply obliterate every threat. If he did, what purpose would the training serve? His role was strictly as a failsafe, stepping in only during critical moments where the lives of most trainees were at risk.
The true value of the training lay in experiencing life-and-death situations. As Zéphyr himself often emphasized, even under the protection of an Admiral, injuries leading to permanent disability—or worse—were an inevitable risk in team combat.
But with Wright present, such risks were effectively erased.
Shortly after the trainees' warship set sail, they encountered a pirate crew—the Butcher Pirates. Their captain, Hobart Fergus, the Blade Butcher, carried a bounty of 58 million berries. At that time, such a bounty rivaled the value of nearly 100 million berries a decade later.
Hobart Fergus was a former butcher from the North Blue who turned to piracy, wielding a massive double-edged axe. A sadistic killer by nature, he treated human lives like livestock, and his crew delighted in slaughtering and tormenting the weak. After a year of rampaging through the Grand Line, they had built a reputation for sheer brutality.
Zéphyr, who had spent years keeping a low profile at Navy Headquarters, was largely unknown to the outside world. For the Butcher Pirates, who had only recently entered the Grand Line, their knowledge of high-level Marine forces was limited. To them, the Navy's powerhouse figures were limited to the likes of Fleet Admiral Kong, Admiral Sengoku the Buddha, and Vice Admiral Garp the Hero.
Seeing that the trainees' warship was of standard design, the pirates assumed it was led by a mere Headquarters Commander. Confident in their numbers, they chose to engage head-on.
They were gravely mistaken.
The warship carried over 50 boot camp trainees, whose average combat strength was on par with a Headquarters Lieutenant. Among them were nine elite trainees, each proficient in varying degrees of the Navy's Rokushiki (Six Powers) techniques—and two of them were Devil Fruit users.
This lineup was more than enough to overwhelm the Butcher Pirates, who numbered over 200.
Hobart Fergus himself faced Smoker, a Logia-type Devil Fruit user. Without Haki to counter Smoker's Smoke-Smoke Fruit, Fergus was utterly outmatched. His raw strength and resilience only delayed the inevitable.
Meanwhile, Rosinante displayed the tactical brilliance he had shown during the elite selection tests. His ability to disrupt enemy senses proved invaluable in improving his team's kill efficiency—a model support fighter.
From a distance, Zéphyr and Goomir observed the trainees' performance. With Wright as their ultimate safety net, they didn't even need to move, relying on their Observation Haki to monitor the situation.
Amid the chaos, a trainee found himself overwhelmed. Attacked by two pirates, he was slashed across the leg and fell to the ground. As the pirates closed in for the kill, he thought to himself, This is the end!
Suddenly, a golden light flashed. Strength returned to his injured leg, allowing him to dodge the fatal blow at the last second. Counterattacking instinctively, he punched one pirate into the air. Only then did he notice that his leg showed no signs of injury—not even a scar. If it weren't for the tear in his pants, he might have thought he'd imagined the whole thing.
Nearby, another trainee had just defeated five pirates but suffered severe abdominal injuries. Blood poured from his wounds, and he could barely stand. As more pirates charged at him, he closed his eyes in resignation, expecting death. Instead, he felt a wave of warmth. Opening his eyes, he discovered his wounds had vanished entirely—no bleeding, no scars. Even his exhaustion had faded. Without hesitation, he grabbed his sword and rejoined the fight.
Positioned at the rear, Wright kept the battlefield under constant surveillance using his Observation Haki. Whenever a trainee faced critical danger or life-threatening injuries, he cast his Holy Light Technique to turn the tide.
A true gold-tier support.
"Ah, it's that familiar 'whack-a-mole' feeling again," Wright mused, stifling a yawn to avoid breaking the tense atmosphere. His expression became increasingly peculiar as the battle raged on.
With Wright's support, the trainees achieved an almost flawless victory. The Butcher Pirates' ordinary crew members were annihilated, and the remaining officers were taken down by the trainees working together. All that remained was their captain, Hobart Fergus, who continued his desperate duel against Smoker.
"Logia users are so limited without Haki," Wright noted, watching the battle. "That jitte Smoker's using isn't great against someone this durable."
As Smoker and Fergus clashed, the other trainees began to surround them, confident that the battle was nearing its conclusion. However, Wright's frown deepened.
Just as he anticipated, Fergus—wounded and enraged—realized his crew had been decimated. Understanding he was no match for this force, he decided to go out in a blaze of vengeance. With a roar, he swung his massive axe in a wide arc, targeting the "spectators."
The elite trainees, all proficient in Soru, easily evaded the attack. But some of the regular trainees, having let their guard down, were less fortunate. Several were struck—one had his abdomen slashed open, another lost an arm, and others were sent flying.
"Ugh, such a rookie mistake. Haven't they ever heard of not crowding around in a fight?" Wright muttered, shaking his head.
At Zéphyr's glance, Wright nodded and stepped forward. He first healed the gravely injured with a Holy Light Technique, then turned to the others. "Stop standing around! Bring the injured over here—don't forget the severed arm."
While Smoker, humiliated by the incident, knocked Fergus unconscious in a fury, Wright focused on repairing the damage. Under his guidance, the injured were stabilized. One by one, he healed wounds, even reattaching severed limbs with a combination of Holy Light Technique and Eternal Flame.
By the time he finished, the previously injured trainees were as good as new. Even Zéphyr, familiar with Wright's abilities, was visibly impressed.
Without Wright, this battle would have ended with at least half the trainees injured, and a few suffering permanent disabilities—even with Zéphyr's intervention.
Wright had truly earned his title as a gold-tier support.
