Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Six Powers and Practical Training
The Six Powers are intricately interconnected, and arranging their study in a logical order can save significant effort.
For example, Shave (Soru) serves as a "preparatory ability" for Moonwalk (Geppo). By first mastering Shave, one can transition more smoothly into practicing Moonwalk later.
Tempest Kick (Rankyaku), strictly speaking, isn't a kicking technique but rather the ability to unleash slash-like attacks using one's legs. It can serve as a supplementary attack when Wright's melee weapons are restricted. As a swordsman capable of Flying Slashes and with legs imbued with Armament Haki, Wright's Tempest Kick is on par with standard sword slashes, making it an excellent addition to his close-quarters combat arsenal.
As for Paper Art (Kami-e), it fundamentally involves mastering control over one's body. Wright's purpose in learning Paper Art is to combine it with mental cultivation and the power of Holy Light, aiming to quickly grasp the miraculous physical technique known as Life Return (Seimei Kikan).
It's a widely accepted fact that the Navy's Six Powers actually encompass seven techniques. Life Return enables conscious control over the body, including hair and internal organs. This technique isn't just a combat marvel but is also immensely practical for disguise, infiltration, and reconnaissance—after all, who wouldn't want to conceal their identity at some point?

In the following days, Zephyr assigned the squad members to spar against one another to practice the Six Powers. As for Wright? Zephyr took it upon himself to personally handle Wright's training, subjecting him to merciless beatdowns. The elite training ground was lively as the other squad members cheerfully practiced with each other while gleefully watching Wright endure Zephyr's "special treatment."
Mastering the Six Powers had a profound impact on Wright's combat prowess, forcing him to adapt many of his battle strategies. And what better way to adapt than through direct combat? Facing off against a top-tier powerhouse like Zephyr greatly accelerated Wright's adaptation, though it came at a price—Wright's Holy Light energy was often so depleted from healing his injuries that he couldn't last until the end of training sessions.
...
Two months passed. Under Zephyr's guidance and through intense sparring, the elite squad members had largely mastered varying numbers of the Six Powers, integrating them into their combat styles.
Wright, however, had not only mastered the Six Powers but seamlessly incorporated them into his fighting techniques, even developing new combat moves, causing his strength to skyrocket.
...
The day of practical training, as Zephyr had mentioned, was fast approaching. This "practical training" involved Zephyr personally leading all the recruits from the training camp on a warship to the Grand Line to engage in real pirate-hunting operations.
Most recruits in the camp came from branch divisions in the Four Blues. Those originating from Navy Headquarters were not much stronger than their peers from the branches, except for having broader horizons. As a result, their experience dealing with pirates was limited, with most having only faced low-bounty pirates.
Even the "Paradise" section of the Grand Line vastly differs from the Four Blues. Many pirates who dominate in the Four Blues either meet their end or retreat back in failure after venturing into the Grand Line. Others don't even get the chance to retreat, sinking to the ocean depths instead. Only elites reach Sabaody Archipelago intact, and only the cream of the crop successfully enter the New World from there.
The warship led by Zephyr would target pirate crews approaching the midsection of the Grand Line—those whose strength was generally at an elite level.
The training camp's warship was manned by ordinary marines responsible for its operations, with the combat force comprising the 50-plus recruits, the ten elite squad members, and, as a failsafe, Admiral Zephyr himself. Two Rear Admirals served as instructors—one staying at Headquarters to maintain communication with the warship, while the other accompanied the group to document the recruits' performance.
Over the past five months, the elite squad had largely mastered various aspects of the Six Powers, while the ordinary recruits weren't as fortunate. They needed to distinguish themselves in the practical training through combat and merit before being granted the opportunity to learn the Six Powers. During this time, they had focused on basic training to build the necessary physical foundation.
"Finally! Actual combat!" Wright exclaimed in excitement.
Back in the East Blue, as a pirate hunter, Wright typically trained for only a month or two before seeking out pirate crews to fight. His battle experience was on an entirely different level compared to these recruits, many of whom had only participated in naval operations against low-tier pirates.
"Hey, Wright, I heard you were a pirate hunter in the East Blue and basically wiped out the entire sea?" Smoker, a Grand Line native, and Rosinante, who grew up at Navy Headquarters, were both unfamiliar with Wright's past. His exploits were classified and known only to Headquarters officers of Commander rank and above, with even they assuming the reports were exaggerated. The only person who fully believed them was Garp, who had planned to seek out Wright regardless if the latter hadn't come to Headquarters himself.
Despite the scarcity of East Blue recruits in the camp, those who were here had all heard of Wright's reputation. For Wright, this practical training was merely a step up in combat intensity, without the usual tension of facing pirates for the first time.
"Well, saying I wiped out the East Blue might be an exaggeration," Wright said, thinking it over. "But in the three years I was active, fewer than five pirate crews I pursued managed to reach the Grand Line!"
"The pirate crews in the East Blue aren't very formidable. Most of them are just a ragtag bunch," he added.
"But even these ragtag crews can wreak havoc if left unchecked," Wright said gravely. "Since Roger's execution, even the weakest East Blue has seen an explosion in pirate numbers every year. It's insane!"
"Impressive as always, Wright," Rosinante said admiringly. Smoker, puffing on a cigar, frowned and asked, "Then… in the half-year you've been away from the East Blue, wouldn't the pirates there have grown more reckless, harming civilians even more?"
Wright chuckled. "No need to worry about that. Before coming to Headquarters, I discussed this with Vice Admiral Garp."
"According to him, the East Blue is the Navy's symbol of peace. Even without me hunting pirates, Headquarters has been systematically reinforcing its presence there. My efforts simply bought them more time to prepare. After bringing me to Headquarters, Garp issued orders for all East Blue divisions to go into full-scale readiness."
"As expected of the Hero, Vice Admiral Garp!" Smoker, ever the martial enthusiast, couldn't hide his admiration.
Wright, however, rolled his eyes. "That unreliable old man wouldn't think that far ahead. If you ask me, it's probably Fleet Admiral Sengoku pulling the strings. Garp just signed the orders because he's from the East Blue."
Thinking of Garp's carefree personality, Smoker covered his face and exhaled a puff of smoke, while Rosinante chuckled. Calling Vice Admiral Garp an "unreliable old man"—Wright certainly was… unique.
Rumor had it that Wright had endured Garp's "special education" aboard his warship en route to Headquarters. Judging by Wright's demeanor, the stories might just be true.
