Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Bug of the East Blue
Time flies—three years passed in the blink of an eye.
In these three years of roaming, Wright awakened his Armament Haki early. However, his Armament Haki was rather unusual. He also achieved a basic mastery of Flying Slashes, integrating them with the power of Holy Light.
While Wright's strength had grown significantly, the world had also changed. Following the death of Gol D. Roger and the legend of the One Piece, countless people set sail in pursuit of their dreams, choosing the path of piracy.
But among these so-called dreamers, only a few genuinely pursued their dreams—or persevered in chasing them. The majority were cruel, merciless, greedy, and deceitful individuals. For them, piracy satisfied their darkest desires and boundless ambitions, driving them to slaughter civilians, loot merchant ships, and attack towns. The stronger pirate crews even dared to assault royal ports, and some grew bold enough to strike at Marine bases.
Despite being the "weakest sea" and a supposed "symbol of peace," even the East Blue wasn't spared. If the relatively peaceful East Blue was this chaotic, how dire must the other seas—and the Grand Line—be?
The so-called "Sea of Dreams" was nothing more than a romantic notion for adventurers. In reality, the ocean was fraught with dangers and shrouded in darkness. True pirates were like cancerous tumors spreading across the sea.
Pirate crews like Roger's, Whitebeard's, Shanks', and Luffy's were essentially adventuring groups driven by their own dreams. But figures like Kaido, Blackbeard, and Shiki embodied the essence of true piracy—merciless predators of the seas. Even Big Mom, in her own twisted way, was a dreamer… albeit an utterly mad one.
As the number of pirates grew, the damage they inflicted on the world increased. Yet for various reasons, the Marines found themselves stretched thinner, struggling more and more to maintain control over the seas.
For the past three years, Wright wandered the East Blue as a bounty hunter. He visited nearly every inhabited island and trained alone on deserted islands for at least a month at a time. Thanks to the immense restorative power of Holy Light, his survival needs were greatly reduced, and his growth accelerated significantly.
A master of both Armament and Observation Haki, a swordsman capable of Flying Slashes, and a Devil Fruit user, Wright was practically a bug-like existence in the East Blue. Under his relentless pursuit, very few pirate crews managed to successfully depart Loguetown for the Grand Line during those three years.
To hone his combat skills and swordsmanship, Wright often avoided using Haki or his Devil Fruit powers, defeating countless pirate crews with pure swordsmanship. His Holy Light ability, however, found frequent use in long-distance chases, restoring his stamina, or healing civilians wounded by pirates.
Wright's unique healing power became his signature. Tales of the "doctor" spread far and wide from Orange Town to the rest of the East Blue. Coupled with his strikingly distinctive Holy Light powers, Wright earned the title of "Dawn Medic," the East Blue's strongest bounty hunter.
Bringing hope to the people and dispelling the darkness of the East Blue, Wright became a legend among commoners. Even the Marines actively cooperated with him, nearly eradicating the few remaining pirate crews with bounties exceeding ten million berries.
As for letting pirates go to report back? Such occurrences became rare. With his Observation Haki, Wright easily discerned the intentions of those who weren't truly evil—and those individuals were few and far between.
Yet, greed and ambition know no bounds. Despite Wright's overwhelming presence, new pirates continued to set sail, convinced that such a powerful figure couldn't stay in the "weakest sea" forever. They believed Wright would eventually leave for the Grand Line, and when he did, they planned to reemerge stronger than ever.
Over the years, the Marines repeatedly invited Wright to join their ranks. After his consistent refusals, they finally gave up. Wright's strength was enough to sweep through the East Blue. Every Marine base in the region coveted his abilities, but none could realistically recruit someone capable of defeating East Blue's highest-ranking officers with ease.
Even a Marine from Headquarters at the rank of captain would find Wright a formidable opponent. Compared to Headquarters, the Four Seas' branch forces were three ranks lower—a mere shadow of the true Marine strength.
Wright's decision not to join the Marines was due to more than his independent streak. There was also Shanks. Over the past three years, the Red-Haired Pirates had formed their crew. Though they were elusive, they occasionally returned to the East Blue to rest. As a true "adventuring crew," they never crossed Wright's moral boundaries, allowing his friendly relationship with Shanks to endure.
Whenever Wright felt he'd made progress in his training, he would seek out the Red-Haired Pirates for a "friendly exchange"—whether sparring, drinking contests, or outright feasts.
This arrangement suited Wright's freedom as a bounty hunter, at least until he ventured to the Grand Line. That was, until one day...
"Shanks, is this your new crewmate? Let me guess…"
During a routine drinking… er, sparring session, Wright arrived at the Red-Haired Pirates' camp. By now, the crew was used to his visits, greeting him warmly. Some even jokingly asked Wright to heal their "stubborn ailments" like hemorrhoids—a remark that left Wright momentarily speechless.
As Wright regained his composure, he noticed Shanks walking over with a sly grin, accompanied by a familiar face. Shanks' smug expression was like that of a fox that had successfully stolen a chicken.
"Judging by that smirk, is this the sharpshooter from Syrup Village you've been raving about for three years—Yasopp?"
"Ahaha, Mr. Wright, it's not like we've never met!" Yasopp scratched his head with a sheepish smile. "I haven't had the chance to thank you for defending our village against those pirates—and for treating our illnesses."
"Don't mention it…" Wright greeted Shanks with a fist bump before turning to Yasopp. "Healing aside, if I hadn't been around, wouldn't you have taken care of those small-time pirates yourself?"
"I heard about your reason for refusing to join Shanks last time… You never disappoint!"
"So, you've finally joined this bastard's crew. Don't tell me…?"
Yasopp glanced helplessly at Shanks, who looked particularly pleased with himself, then sighed. "Yes, I've gotten married and even have a son now. But… I'm destined not to be a good father, am I?"
"And you, Mr. Wright," Yasopp continued, smirking slightly. "As someone who also turned Shanks down, your 'dream' must be—pfft, sorry, sorry!"
"Hahahaha!"
The Red-Haired Pirates burst into laughter. Shanks, the biggest culprit, was laughing so hard he nearly doubled over.
"No matter how many times I hear it, Wright, your dream never fails to crack me up. But don't worry—we'll definitely help you when the time comes!"
"You bastard, Shanks! All of you! Bring me the booze! I'll show you all today that a man's dream is sacred and inviolable!"
"Listen up! If even one of you is sober by sunrise, I'll eat this entire ship—the Red Force!"
Ben Beckman laughed. "With Yasopp on our side today, Wright, you might not win this time!"
Lucky Roux grinned. "Here it comes—Wright's 'nothing is impossible to eat' series!"
Shanks roared, "Let's have a feast!"
"Yeah!" the crew cheered in unison.
The festivities erupted once more, as Wright and the Red-Haired Pirates prepared for yet another night of revelry.
