Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Be Happy, My Ship’s Doctor!

Syrup Village, in the villa…

"Y-you… cough... Who are you?" Kaya asked weakly, startled by the sudden opening of the window. She gazed at Ace and Nami, who had just appeared in her room. Kaya, having lived her entire life in Syrup Village, was certain that these two strangers didn't belong here.

Nami, standing beside Ace, curiously observed the fragile girl with pale skin.

There's no way she could be the doctor we're looking for… right?

"My name is Ace. I'm a pirate, and this is Nami, my navigator," Ace said confidently.

"Pfft!" Nami nearly choked on her breath.

On a merchant ship, sure—introducing yourself as a pirate might make sense. But barging into a sick girl's room and announcing you're a pirate? Isn't that a bit… off?

Surprisingly, Kaya didn't scream or panic. Instead, she smiled warmly and said, "So, Mr. Pirate, do you need help? If it's money you need, I still have some here."

Nami was taken aback. "Wait… did you hear him? He said he's a pirate—aren't you scared?"

Kaya chuckled softly. "There are good pirates and bad pirates, right? Mr. Pirate here doesn't seem like a bad one."

Ace smiled as Kaya spoke. Unbeknownst to her, Ace's slight use of Conqueror's Haki, thanks to his incredible natural talent, had subtly eased Kaya's mind.

Nami fell silent. To her, pirates were always despicable scum—whether it was Arlong's crew or the countless other pirates she had stolen from. But this guy…

Her gaze shifted to Ace, her expression conflicted.

"We don't need your money," Ace said, smiling gently at the fragile, yet kind girl.

"Then, Mr. Pirate…" Kaya began.

"Just call me Ace," Ace interrupted with a warm smile.

"My apologies then. You can call me Kaya. So, Ace-san, why are you here?" Kaya asked, coughing slightly as she spoke.

"I have a special ability to predict parts of the future. In the future I foresee, you are destined to be my ship's doctor, Kaya."

Ace looked at her with a sympathetic expression. He knew her story—how Kaya had been frail her entire life and now, after her parents' deaths at the hands of Kuro, spent her days in loneliness, confined to her room. Usopp had not yet come into her life to tell her his 'future' stories.

"Why?" Kaya was stunned.

Nami, standing nearby, looked confused as well.

Is he serious?

Kaya had never met Ace before. How could he know exactly where she was in the vast ocean unless he really did have some kind of supernatural ability?

Could it be true… is she his destined navigator?

Nami found herself lost in thought.

"Ace-san, you must be joking. Look at me—I'm so weak I can barely go for a walk, let alone sail the seas as your ship's doctor. Besides, I've only read a few medical books. I don't really know how to treat diseases," Kaya said, her voice tinged with self-deprecation as she glanced at her frail body.

"Let's not talk about that for now. Let me show you another one of my powers first," Ace said with a smile. He pulled out a small wooden stick.

"Watch closely, Kaya."

Snap!

With a snap of his fingers, Kaya watched in amazement as Ace's thumb and index finger ignited into flames. Her eyes widened as the small wooden stick was set ablaze.

"Wow! That's amazing! Ace, doesn't that hurt?" Kaya asked, concerned as she saw the flames flickering on Ace's hand.

"Nope, I've got special powers. Here, Kaya, blow it out," Ace said as he approached her bedside with a smile.

"You want me to blow it? Okay, here goes."

Whoosh!

As Kaya blew on the flame, it instantly transformed into a glowing rose, with a small flame at its center that seemed to burn eternally.

"The dark days will pass. This fire rose is for you, Kaya. Be happy," Ace said, gently offering the rose to her.

Although the trick seemed simple, creating the flame at the center of the rose had taken considerable effort on Ace's part—it was something he had specifically prepared for Kuro.

"Thank you, Ace-san. Thank you so much," Kaya said, taking the rose in her trembling hands, tears welling up in her eyes. She covered her mouth as her emotions finally spilled over.

Kaya began to talk about her parents, her sorrow over their loss, and her longing for the outside world. Ace sat quietly, listening with a gentle smile as she poured her heart out.

Nami, standing nearby, felt a pang of sympathy for the girl. At the same time, she rolled her eyes at Ace.

This guy sure knows how to charm girls, doesn't he?

——

In the days that followed, Ace continued visiting Kaya's room. He would perform small magic tricks with his abilities and share stories about the wonders of the sea. Kaya's sadness gradually gave way to a bright, genuine smile, as she found joy in Ace's company.

However, Ace's and Nami's presence in the village didn't go unnoticed for long—thanks to Ace's deliberate actions, their whereabouts were soon discovered by Kuro.
