Chapter 23: Shadows and Whispers
Sakura saw so many soldiers gathered in one place. Her curiosity piqued, she decided to climb one of the buildings to get a better view. She left her pull basket at the base of the building and began the arduous climb. With her broken arm, it was a struggle, but she pushed through the pain, her determination unwavering.
As she reached the top, she saw the humans inspecting the remains of her fight with the wolf from before. Her eyes widened in realization. The wolf was gone. "So it survived," she thought, her heart racing. "That means it could be anywhere."
Sakura crouched low, trying to stay hidden as she listened in on the soldiers' conversation. However, the only word she could understand was "bullets," and it didn't help her much. She bit her lip, frustrated by the language barrier.
"Why can't I understand them?" she muttered to herself.
Voice: "Because you are not one of them. You are different. You are stronger."
Sakura flinched at the voice in her head. "You again," she whispered. "Why do you keep saying such things?"
Voice: "Because you need to survive, Sakura. You need to embrace your true nature. These humans are weak. They cannot protect you."
"But I don't want to hurt anyone," Sakura replied, her voice barely audible. "I just want to survive."
Voice: "Survival sometimes requires sacrifice. You must be willing to do whatever it takes."
Sakura shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. "No," she whispered fiercely. "I won't let you control me."
She focused back on the soldiers, trying to piece together their conversation. The word "bullets" kept coming up, and she could see them gesturing towards the area where the wolf had been. "Are they planning to hunt it down?" she wondered. "Or are they just preparing for another attack?"
Her thoughts were interrupted by the voice again.
Voice: "They will fail. The wolf is too powerful for them. But you... you can defeat it. You have the strength."
Sakura clenched her fists. "I don't want to fight," she said. "I just want to find a safe place for Kuro and me."
Voice: "And you think you can do that without power? Without embracing what you are?"
Sakura felt a pang of doubt. She looked down at the soldiers, who were now moving out, seemingly to search for the wolf. She knew she couldn't stay there for long. "Maybe the voice is right," she thought. "Maybe I do need to be stronger."
But another part of her resisted. "No, I can't give in to that darkness. I have to find another way."
She took a deep breath and began to climb down the building. Her arm throbbed with pain, but she gritted her teeth and pushed through. When she reached the ground, she grabbed her pull basket and started moving away from the area.
As she walked, she tried to shake off the lingering presence of the voice. "I have to focus," she told herself. "I need to find food, shelter, and a way to stay safe."
Voice: "And power. Don't forget power, Sakura."
She ignored the voice, pushing it to the back of her mind. "Kuro," she called softly. The black cat emerged from the shadows, trotting over to her side. Sakura felt a wave of relief at the sight of her companion.
"We'll be okay," she said, more to reassure herself than Kuro. "We just need to keep moving."
As they walked, Sakura's mind raced with thoughts and plans. She needed to find a place to rest and tend to her arm. She also needed to figure out a way to understand the humans better. "Maybe I can find a book or something," she mused. "Something to help me learn their language."
Voice: "You don't need them. You are stronger on your own."
"No," Sakura whispered. "I'm not alone. I have Kuro. And I will find a way to survive without losing myself."
With renewed determination, she continued her journey, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. The road ahead was uncertain, but Sakura knew she had to stay strong and true to herself, no matter what challenges lay ahead.
