Chapter 16: The Invitation
Kairo sat in the dimly lit backroom of the underground arena, his body still aching from the battle. Despite the pain, a smirk played on his lips. He had taken down a Forsaken, something few could claim.
Lena leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "I still can't believe you pulled that off."
Kairo chuckled. "Neither can I."
His system notifications had been flooding in ever since the fight ended, but he hadn't had time to check them all. He finally opened the log.
[Victory Achieved.]
[New Adaptive Trait Unlocked – Forsaken's Resilience.]
[Physical Reinforcement Upgraded.]
[Combat Proficiency Increased.]
His fingers tightened slightly. Forsaken's Resilience?
He pulled up the description.
Forsaken's Resilience – Due to surviving a battle against a Forsaken and dealing the finishing blow, the user has developed a resistance to mutated energy and a slight regeneration boost when near death.
That… was insane.
If he had this ability during the fight, he might've been able to take more hits without getting nearly killed.
Lena noticed his expression. "Something good?"
Kairo exhaled. "Let's just say… I got stronger."
Lena shook her head. "Unreal. You're evolving at a ridiculous speed."
Before Kairo could respond, the door creaked open.
A familiar, intimidating presence filled the room.
The Kingpin.
The Kingpin strolled in, flanked by two towering guards. His expensive suit barely had a wrinkle, and he carried himself with the confidence of a man who controlled everything around him.
Kairo and Lena immediately tensed.
The Kingpin smiled. "Relax. If I wanted you dead, we wouldn't be having this conversation."
Kairo remained silent, waiting.
The Kingpin took a seat across from him, swirling the drink in his hand. "You've caught the attention of some very important people tonight."
Kairo frowned. "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"
The Kingpin chuckled. "That depends." His sharp eyes locked onto Kairo's. "You're strong. Smart. And, more importantly, you're hungry. You want to grow, to survive, to rise above the weak."
Kairo didn't respond.
The Kingpin leaned forward slightly. "I can make that easier for you."
Lena narrowed her eyes. "What's that supposed to mean?"
The Kingpin ignored her. "I'm offering you a place in my network. Protection, resources, training. You wouldn't have to fight for scraps anymore."
Kairo stiffened. He knew what this was. The Kingpin wasn't just offering help—he was recruiting him.
A deal like this… it would come with strings.
Heavy ones.
Lena crossed her arms. "And in exchange?"
The Kingpin smiled. "Loyalty. Service when required. Special tasks, from time to time." He shrugged. "Nothing too unreasonable."
Kairo's mind raced. This was huge. He had fought to survive for so long, struggling for every inch of power. And now, an opportunity had fallen into his lap.
But at what cost?
Did he really want to be tied to someone like the Kingpin?
The room was silent, the weight of the moment pressing down on them.
Then Kairo made his decision.
Kairo leaned back, meeting the Kingpin's gaze. "I appreciate the offer."
The Kingpin raised an eyebrow.
"But," Kairo continued, "I'm not looking to be someone's pawn."
Lena's lips curled into a smirk.
The Kingpin stared at Kairo for a long moment.
Then… he laughed.
A deep, amused laugh that sent chills through the room.
"Interesting," he mused. "You refuse power so easily?"
Kairo shrugged. "I refuse chains."
The Kingpin finished his drink and set the glass down with a soft clink. "You've got a spine. I like that." He stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "Fine. I won't force you. But know this—opportunities like this don't come twice."
Kairo nodded. "I'll take my chances."
The Kingpin gave him one last lingering look before turning to leave.
At the door, he paused. "Be careful, Kairo. When you make enemies of people like me…" He smiled coldly. "…you don't get second chances."
With that, he walked out, his guards following.
The door shut behind him, leaving Kairo and Lena alone.
Lena whistled. "That was… risky."
Kairo exhaled slowly. "Yeah."
She grinned. "I liked it."
Kairo smirked. "Of course you did."
They sat in silence for a moment, the tension still lingering.
Then Lena sighed. "So what now?"
Kairo clenched his fists.
"Now?" He looked at his hands, feeling the power growing within him.
"Now, we get stronger."
