Night of the Apocalypse

Chapter 48 - Safe Zone

A few minutes later, Shen Qiu stopped the bicycle in a corner.

He took a deep breath. Thanks to this bicycle, he had finally managed to shake off those zombies without incident.

However, Shen Qiu wasn’t feeling very happy; instead, he was filled with worry.

The outside world was far too dangerous, filled with wandering monsters and enemies, and new, unseen creatures were emerging from time to time.

He needed to find a safe place to hide.

But judging by the current situation, it seemed that there was nowhere nearby that was safe.

At that moment, Shen Qiu’s eyes suddenly lit up as a thought flashed through his mind: the nearby Konglan Nuclear Power Plant.

The Konglan Nuclear Power Plant was the largest power facility in the City of Clear Skies, providing electricity to the entire city, as well as all surrounding residential areas and the adjacent Fifth Administrative District.

Such an important facility was definitely heavily guarded.

As long as he could make it there, he would be relatively safe.

Thinking of this, Shen Qiu wasted no time and set off towards the Konglan Nuclear Power Plant.

He was currently on Haiyan Street, which was only about 2.3 kilometers from the nuclear power plant’s main entrance.

If all went smoothly, he could reach it in half an hour.

At the Main Entrance of the Konglan Nuclear Power Plant

Five heavy TK-01 Tiger tanks were parked in front of the main entrance, flanked by ten armored vehicles, with two rocket trucks, Fast Arrow, positioned behind them.

Two hundred fully armed soldiers were spread out to defend the area.

As soon as the zombies emerged from the mist, they were instantly turned into Swiss cheese by the dense rain of bullets.

A middle-aged man with a stern expression, dark skin, and wearing a lieutenant’s military uniform with white gloves raised his voice to address all the soldiers present.

“An order has come down from above: under no circumstances are we allowed to let anything happen here. Otherwise, we will face military law punishment. Do you understand?”

“Understood!”

The soldiers responded in a solemn tone.

Meanwhile, in the distance, Shen Qiu cautiously approached, quickly hearing the sound of intense gunfire.

Shen Qiu knew he had won his gamble; this place was indeed heavily guarded.

He quickened his pace, and before long, he was near the main entrance of the Konglan Nuclear Power Plant.

From a distance, he could see the outlines of heavy weaponry through the mist.

Taking a deep breath, he was just about to rush over when he suddenly spotted a figure emerging from the mist on his left.

The figure was also running toward the main entrance of the Konglan Nuclear Power Plant, waving its hands and shouting.

“Don’t shoot! Don’t shoot! I’m not a monster!”

However, before the figure could get close…

Bang! Bang!

A hail of bullets swept through the air, instantly turning it into a mass of flesh.

Seeing this, Shen Qiu’s heart sank; thankfully, it wasn’t him. Otherwise, he would have been done for.

But Shen Qiu didn’t give up just yet. This area was the only relatively safe place nearby, so he planned to hide inside.

Suddenly, he had an idea and moved toward the right side of the nuclear power plant.

Before long, he reached the protective wall on the right side of the plant and followed it forward.

After walking about two hundred meters, he came face to face with a tall, leafy poplar tree, approximately four meters high, with branches nearly level with the barbed wire atop the protective wall.

Seeing the poplar tree, Shen Qiu’s eyes lit up; it was just as he remembered.

When he was a child, he and Huang Gan often scavenged for scrap near here because they didn’t have money. They even found an abandoned toolbox under this poplar tree that they sold for quite a bit.

Shen Qiu ran to the base of the poplar tree, slung his gun on his back, and wrapped his arms around the tree trunk, effortlessly climbing up.

Before long, he climbed onto the branches of the tree, carefully making his way toward the protective wall. He approached it closely.

Upon closer inspection of the protective wall, he noticed that the barbed wire was exceptionally sharp.

Climbing over it would be quite difficult.

Of course, this didn’t deter Shen Qiu. He returned to the main fork of the poplar tree and broke off some of its branches.

Holding the broken branches carefully, Shen Qiu edged closer to the protective wall.

He then laid the branches he had broken over the barbed wire.

With a firm step down, he leaped off the protective wall.

Thud!

Shen Qiu landed on the ground, rolling several times before coming to a stop.

The hard concrete surface made him feel sore all over. Fortunately, he had managed to absorb some of the impact as he landed, so he didn’t sustain any serious injuries.

Slowly, he got up and surveyed his surroundings.

All around him were rectangular equipment factories and various transformer and transmission devices, but he didn’t see any patrolling soldiers.

If nothing unexpected happened, the soldiers guarding this area should be stationed at various entrances and important equipment buildings.

As for the vast open areas inside the nuclear power plant, there probably wouldn’t be any special defenses.

At that moment, Shen Qiu suddenly felt a coolness on his face as a light drizzle began to fall.

Looking up at the gray sky, he was somewhat surprised; it was actually raining.

However, this was a good thing, as the rain slightly improved visibility.

Unfortunately, the rain was too light, and the fog still hadn’t dissipated.

Shen Qiu’s expression changed several times before he started running toward a nearby factory building.

When he arrived at the entrance of the factory building, Shen Qiu found that the door was surprisingly unlocked and ajar.

It seemed that the staff who were originally guarding this place had left in a panic without properly closing it.

Shen Qiu gently pushed the door open and slipped inside.

Holding his gun, he cautiously checked the interior, where he saw giant transformer devices methodically operating all around him.

After confirming that there were no monsters or people inside the factory,

he quickly found a corner, sat down, and leaned against the wall to rest, murmuring to himself,

“Ah~ finally safe. As long as I wait until dawn, I should be fine.”

At this time, the gunfire at the front gate of the Blue Sky Nuclear Power Plant was getting louder.

The massive explosions were deafening.

Through the thinning fog, he could see flickering flames from the explosions.

Groups of zombies were charging recklessly toward them.

Bang! Bang!

The troops defending the gate unleashed a torrential downpour of bullets, with each zombie that got close being pierced through, making it nearly impossible for them to advance.

“Good shooting! This is the spirit we need. We absolutely cannot allow these monsters to get close. As long as we hold out until dawn, victory will be ours,”

Lieutenant Han Jia was also excitedly encouraging everyone.

“Don’t worry, sir! Under our powerful firepower and steel weapons, these monsters are simply no match. We can take down as many as come!”

The adjutant beside him replied confidently.

“Yeah, but we must not let our guard down. No matter how weak the enemy is, we must give it our all.”

Just as he finished speaking, whoosh!

A shell pierced through the fog, instantly hitting a heavy TK-01 Tiger tank, resulting in a violent explosion accompanied by raging flames.

Amidst the fog, an LZ-01 War Guardian, known as the Wolf Spider, charged forward with hundreds of Cleaners following behind.

“Take it down!”

Lieutenant Han Jia shouted angrily as he quickly realized the situation.
