Chapter 46 - Attraction
The entire nursery building echoed with the cries of babies, and wherever one looked, there were zombies drawn to the sound.
Among the horde of zombies, one zombie warrior stood out, towering at 2.5 meters tall, with a bulky frame, clad in metallic samurai armor, wearing a gray iron helmet, and wielding a large blade.
The staircase leading from the first floor to the second floor was blocked by numerous obstacles, trapping many of the not-so-intelligent zombies below.
The zombie warrior angrily pushed against the stairs, but the other zombies continued to obstruct its way.
It furiously swung its large blade, cleaving the zombies that blocked its path.
After assessing the situation, Shen Qiu withdrew his head and said to Amu,
“The situation isn’t good. There are too many zombies gathered on the first floor, and one of them looks quite strong. The good news is that the safe staircase to the second floor is blocked with debris, so those monsters haven’t made it up yet.”
After hearing Shen Qiu’s report, Amu also leaned in to take a quick glance before retreating and saying,
“There are too many of them. It’s not something we can deal with quickly. Can we contact the nursery to find out their situation?”
“I’ll call A Dan right away.”
Aunt Qiao immediately took out her phone, found Adan’s number, and dialed.
Beep beep…
The call was quickly connected.
“A Dan, how’s it going over there?”
Aunt Qiao asked in a low voice.
“A monster popped up in the nursery, but we managed to kill it together. However, there are several zombies in the hallway outside, and they’re trying to break down our door. It’s about to give way.”
A Dan said in a panic.
“Hang in there, we’re coming right away.”
Aunt Qiao hurriedly replied.
“Okay, okay.”
A Dan responded, still flustered.
Aunt Qiao then hung up the phone and looked at Captain Amu excitedly, saying,
“The nursery hasn’t fallen yet; they’re all alive!”
Upon hearing Aunt Qiao’s words, Amu’s expression grew increasingly serious.
Huang Chuan, standing nearby, anxiously said,
“Captain, the nursery hasn’t fallen. What should we do? It’s just us.”
Amu raised his hand to stop Huang Chuan from speaking and turned to Aunt Qiao to ask,
“How many social workers are in the nursery?”
“Five!”
Aunt Qiao paused slightly before quickly responding.
“Five people, plus your ten, with over 130 babies! We can’t carry them all! I initially thought this place had fallen, so we could save as many as possible. But now that they’re all alive, that complicates things.”
Amu said with a heavy expression.
“Captain Amu, can’t we request more personnel for support?” Huang Gan hesitated before asking.
“That’s unrealistic; there simply aren’t that many hands available. You saw it too, Commander Wei Feng has even more people to protect. It’s already tough to pull us out.”
Amu shook his head. If he could have called for help, he would have done so already.
After listening to their conversation, Shen Qiu pondered for a moment before speaking up,
“Captain Amu, can we change our strategy? Since the nursery hasn’t fallen, can we fight our way in and hold our ground there? The situation is bad, but as long as we can hold out until dawn, things will definitely improve.”
Upon hearing Shen Qiu’s suggestion, Amu’s expression kept changing.
At that moment, Huang Chuan and the others also turned to Amu and said,
“Captain, wouldn’t that be inappropriate? What about Commander Wei Feng?”
“Enough talking, there’s nothing inappropriate about this. As soldiers, it’s our duty. Besides, those lives are worth fighting for! As for Commander Wei Feng, we can just report to him afterward.”
Amu decisively made the call.
“Since you’ve said so, Captain, we’ll follow you!”
Huang Chuan and the others all expressed their agreement.
Seeing this scene, Shen Qiu felt deep admiration for them.
“Alright! Let’s go and show those monsters our strength—use grenades!”
Amu pulled out a grenade as he spoke.
“Understood!”
Shen Qiu and the others also took out their grenades.
Amu led Shen Qiu and the others carefully inside.
At the first-floor safety stairs, a crowd of zombies continued to push forward up the stairs, while the bloated zombie warrior roared angrily at the zombies blocking its way.
Suddenly, several iron lumps fell from the sky and landed on the ground beside the zombie warrior.
One zombie standing next to the warrior inexplicably caught one of the iron lumps with its outstretched hand.
It looked at the iron lump in confusion, its blood-red eyes revealing a hint of bewilderment.
“???”
The next second!
Boom!
A series of explosions erupted!
Thick blood and limbs flew in all directions.
When the explosions ended, groups of zombies lay sprawled on the ground. However, the zombie warrior still stood firm, one hand shielding its face, while its armor was charred black from the blast.
“Damn, it’s still not dead?”
Huang Chuan and the others were wide-eyed in disbelief.
Shen Qiu’s heart suddenly trembled; this was beyond his usual understanding.
At this moment, Amu pulled out another grenade, removed the safety pin, and threw it.
The zombie warrior reacted quickly, turning around with a roar and swinging its large knife, striking the thrown grenade with deadly precision.
Boom!
The grenade exploded in mid-air but didn’t harm it in the slightest.
“What do we do, Captain? That monster has such strong life force; we can’t kill it!”
Huang Chuan asked in panic.
Provoked, the zombie warrior’s anger surged, and it charged at Shen Qiu and the others, holding its large knife.
“No way, we can’t beat it. I’ll draw it away; you all handle things here!”
Amu immediately made the decision.
At this moment, Shen Qiu hurriedly grabbed Amu and said, “I’ll lead it away; we need your command here!”
Without waiting for Amu to refute, Shen Qiu ran toward the right side. He had observed that there weren’t many monsters on that side, making it the best route to draw it away.
Then, Shen Qiu began to fire at the zombie warrior’s face, taking quick shots.
Bang! Bang!
Two shots hit its face accurately.
The bullets lodged in its already grotesque face, making it even more terrifying.
Instantly, the zombie warrior exploded in rage, its hatred shifting to Shen Qiu, who was now being pursued.
Amu glanced at Shen Qiu’s retreating figure, gritting his teeth. “Let’s go!”
On the other side, Shen Qiu continued to accelerate, quickly bursting out of the building.
After running for over ten meters, Shen Qiu turned to look back.
“Roar!”
At that moment, the enraged zombie warrior charged out, its crimson eyes seeming ready to devour him.
Shen Qiu glanced around before running toward the right door of the welfare center.
He had considered fleeing toward Wei Feng’s side, but in the end, he decided against it. This monster seemed different from ordinary zombies; its life force was too resilient.
If Wei Feng and the others couldn’t deal with it immediately, letting it rush into a crowd would be a nightmare.
So Shen Qiu planned to draw it away himself and then find a way to shake it off.
Roar!
With a beast-like roar, the zombie warrior relentlessly pursued Shen Qiu.
Despite its large and bulky size, it was surprisingly fast. An ordinary person might not be able to outrun it. Unfortunately for the monster, it was chasing Shen Qiu, whose physical abilities were exceptional.
Before long, Shen Qiu spotted the right door of the welfare center.
At that moment, he saw a large wrought-iron gate with a massive iron lock on it.
He immediately raised his gun and shot at the lock!
Bang! Bang!
After several shots, sparks flew.
The iron lock remained intact.
“Damn it!”
Seeing this, Shen Qiu was at a loss for words.
At this point, the zombie warrior was quickly closing in, and it looked like it would catch up any moment.
Shen Qiu’s mouth twitched slightly as he strapped his gun on his back and accelerated toward the iron gate, jumping just before he reached it.
He stepped on the door and grabbed the railing of the gate, climbing up!
As Shen Qiu reached the top of the gate, the zombie warrior had already chased up.
Seeing this, Shen Qiu immediately jumped down.
“Roar!”
The zombie warrior swung its knife down hard onto the iron gate.
Clang!
The old iron gate crashed down in response.
Shen Qiu’s heart suddenly sank as he bent down and rushed out.
Bang!
The iron gate slammed heavily onto the ground, nearly crushing Shen Qiu.
Shen Qiu was drenched in cold sweat, having narrowly escaped disaster. He didn’t dare to underestimate the situation any longer and fled down the street at full speed.
As he ran, Shen Qiu noticed the gray mist in the air; visibility was getting lower and lower, now less than eight meters.
Looking at the mist, Shen Qiu’s brow furrowed tightly.
