Night of the Apocalypse

Chapter 27 - Waiting

“I understand. As time goes by and more people are eliminated, our target will become increasingly obvious. The longer we stay in this world, the higher the level of danger will rise.”
Tang Kexin responded softly after hearing Shen Qiu’s words.

“Uh, that’s basically the idea.”

Shen Qiu was taken aback; he didn’t expect her to be so sharp. He then gently pushed open the cabinet door and carefully crawled out.

He looked around the room where they were hiding; everything was fairly well-preserved, and there were many items on display.

From the style and color of the decorations, it seemed like a children’s room.

Shen Qiu walked over to the desk against the wall and began searching through the items, planning to use this hiding time to explore the house.

Tang Kexin didn’t just sit idly by; she helped him look for things as well.

After searching for a while, Shen Qiu hadn’t found anything useful when his gaze caught a large sealed box in the corner.
He walked over, squatted down, and tried to lift the lid!

Crack!

The box opened smoothly, revealing a cool-looking, pitch-black firearm in front of Shen Qiu’s eyes.

His eyes lit up, and he quickly reached out to grab it.

However, at the moment it was in his hands, a hint of disappointment flashed in his eyes. After checking it, he set it aside.

Seeing this, Tang Kexin asked, “Is it a toy gun?”

“Yeah, and it’s not even the spring-loaded kind; it’s just a sound toy gun, so it’s not worth much.”
As Shen Qiu was explaining, he suddenly stopped.

He noticed that inside the box, there was a metal spring slingshot and a large box of glass marbles.

Shen Qiu picked it up and tugged at it, discovering that the elasticity of the metal spring was quite good and that it wasn’t broken. He then put the slingshot and the marbles into his backpack and continued searching the box.

Seeing Shen Qiu diligently searching, Tang Kexin’s lips curled into a faint, unhealthy smile.

After more than an hour, Shen Qiu and Tang Kexin left the house and cautiously made their way back to the place they had initially arrived at.

Since the cleaners nearby had been misled and diverted, Shen Qiu and Tang Kexin made their progress quite smoothly.

After a while, they emerged from around the corner of a building onto the street. They carefully looked ahead.

In front of them was a small circular plaza that was very quiet; not a single cleaner could be seen. Hundreds of broken bodies lay on the ground, and the pavement was stained red with blood.

A strong smell of blood filled the air.

After carefully observing and confirming that there were no issues, Shen Qiu said to Tang Kexin,

“Keep an eye out for me; if you notice anything unusual, alert me immediately!”

“Okay!”

Tang Kexin replied without hesitation.

Shen Qiu then made his way toward the bodies. As he got closer, he crouched down beside one of the corpses and reached into its pockets.

He ended up pulling out a cell phone and a wallet.

Without even looking at them, he tossed them aside and moved on to the next body.

One body, two bodies, three bodies.

After checking twenty-three corpses in a row, he found nothing of value.

Shen Qiu furrowed his brow. Suddenly, he spotted a corpse around the corner that had been shot in the head and was wearing a floral dress.

She had a small red crossbody bag slung over her shoulder.

Shen Qiu immediately ran over, yanked the bag off her, and opened the zipper to dump the contents out.

A pile of lipsticks, cosmetics, and random items tumbled onto the ground.

As Shen Qiu rummaged through the pile, excitement flickered in his eyes. Among the items, he saw chewing gum, two pieces of chocolate, and a box of wafers.
He quickly stuffed the food into his backpack and began to withdraw slowly.

Shen Qiu decisively decided to take the opportunity and turned his head to survey the surrounding buildings, looking for a hiding place.

Soon, his gaze was drawn to a steel structure building directly below. This three-story building had a third of its roof collapsed, and from its charred exterior, it appeared to have been attacked by artillery. Nonetheless, it had not fallen down, indicating that the quality was quite good.

Shen Qiu then signaled to Tang Kexin, who was hiding at a distance, before running towards the precarious building.

Seeing this, Tang Kexin immediately followed him.

The staircase was blocked by the collapse, preventing normal access.

However, it was precisely because of this blockage that Shen Qiu chose this place.

He accelerated sharply and leaped, grabbing onto the protruding steel frame of the wall and skillfully climbing up.

Standing on the protruding steel frame, he extended his hand towards Tang Kexin.

Tang Kexin jumped up and reached for Shen Qiu’s hand.

Shen Qiu pulled her up and then grabbed onto the second-floor window ledge. As it was an unfinished building, there were no windows installed, allowing Shen Qiu to climb in with ease.

He took a quick glance around the room; it was completely open from front to back, filled with construction materials, and in disarray, with nothing useful inside.

At that moment, Tang Kexin climbed in and asked Shen Qiu,

“Are we going to hide here?”

“Yeah, we’ll stay here until it gets dark. When we arrived in this world, I saw two moons. If nothing unexpected happens, we will need to see two moons again to go back. The moon only appears at night, which is why we need to come here just before it gets dark.”

Shen Qiu pulled out a piece of chocolate, unwrapped it, and began to chew.

“Yeah, that makes sense,” Tang Kexin replied after pondering for a few seconds.

“Here!”

Shen Qiu pulled out another piece of chocolate and handed it to Tang Kexin.

“It’s for you.”

Tang Kexin shook her head and took out some roasted meat from her bag, popping it into her mouth.

Taking her time, she bit off a small piece and chewed it slowly, swallowing it as if savoring a delicacy, eating very elegantly.

Shen Qiu watched this scene, the corners of his mouth twitching slightly, but he didn’t say anything.

In just a few seconds, Shen Qiu swallowed a piece of chocolate. Although he was still quite hungry, he clearly felt much better.

He didn’t continue eating; instead, he crouched by the window and stared outside.

At that moment, Tang Kexin also moved closer, squatting next to Shen Qiu as they both gazed out together.

The two were nearly side by side, and Shen Qiu instinctively pulled back a bit of distance, as he didn’t dare let Tang Kexin get too close.

Tang Kexin naturally noticed this; she turned to Shen Qiu and flashed a charming smile.

Shen Qiu, of course, didn’t see it, completely focused on the street outside.

Time continued to pass, and soon more than an hour had gone by.

At this point, Tang Kexin lowered her voice and reminded Shen Qiu, “Look under the seventh building on the right across the street.”

Following her suggestion, Shen Qiu carefully glanced over.

He saw a group of people sneaking out from inside; at the front were two men and one woman dressed in casual clothing, all with expressions of fear on their faces.

Behind them were five men dressed in dark green outfits, looking very capable. The leader held an automatic pistol in his hand, which resembled the P41 automatic pistol produced by the Gray Alliance.
