NOVEL NEXT Chapter 11: 11
Tensions were high but as any good con man would tell you that there are no rewards without risk. Which is exactly what I was doing I needed to play the long game and paint myself as a good guy. To get the maximum possible return from the bat family I couldn't be cowed by Batman although this put me at odds with Batman to some extent.
This didn't mean that I was going to be hostile to the league as a whole I just don't want to be close to Batman. As I said before Batman is a paranoid man with many trust issues who believes he knows better than everyone. What this meant is that when he says he trusts you he doesn't. Unless Batman can control something completely he wouldn't trust it which is why he made countermeasures against everyone in the league should they go against him.
Batman stared at me for a few seconds before turning away with a grunt waiting for the GCPD to collect the criminals. The whole time he was glaring at the ball of fear toxin floating over my shoulder. In all honesty, if I could I would have kept some of this fear toxin for myself. Unfortunately, I did not doubt that Batman and Fury were keeping a close eye on the ball of fear toxin I had and I wasn't sure if they would notice if some disappeared into my inventory.
It wasn't long before the GCPD arrived with Commissioner Gordon along with a few shield agents. Much to Batman's Growing displeasure although he said nothing the way his glare intensified said it all. The men of the Bat-family became tenser due to Shields's presence. Batgirl and Bluebird were less tense because I pointed out that we worked for the government. It made perfect sense that Shield was here considering the number of high-profile individuals that were present for the event. Not to men two official Avengers plus myself and several shield agents were already present.
To say that Jim Gordon wasn't pleased with Shield's presence would be an understatement. Although he cooperated he didn't like the idea of deferring to someone about how to handle the situation. Rather than do nothing and let Shield handle everything Jim decided to first speak with Batman while Natasha went to speak with Fury over the phone. This left me with a lot of time on my hands and nothing to do as no one wanted to approach me.
It was understandable I had a ball of fear toxin in a ball floating by my head and no one was sure if I would lose control of said ball of toxins. Surprisingly a spunky redhead from the Bat family was the only one that came up to me.
Batgirl: Although what you said was correct it doesn't mean we aren't held to a standard to work for the league means that we don't accept compensation we fight for what is right, unlike the Avengers and Shield. I'm not saying that you and your team are wrong for doing your job but it should be more than a job when lives are on the line.
"I don't disagree with you as you said lives mean more than checks but going by that same logic are lives more important than your ethical code of conduct? I looked into Gotham's history a lot of lives are lost to individuals like the Joker had he been sentenced to death many would still have lived. I won't pretend I know better than anyone else that would be egotistical. I'm just awaiting the rise of a god emperor of mankind to guide humanity"
That seemed to catch the attention of others in the room that were pretending not to listen. Some like Batman didn't bother to hide the fact they were listening to what I was talking about.
Batgirl: Who is this god emperor of mankind?
"In my universe, before I was brought here he is a literal human turned god with knowledge far surpassing any individual. He guided humanity beyond our home star and defended us against the chaos gods of the warp. His empire spanned over a million worlds as he lead humanity into a golden age"
Batgirl: And you believe that a new god emperor will be born to lead Earth in this world?
"Hopefully but I'm not certain"
