Neon Oligarch

Chapter 14: Chapter 14 The Enticement and the Snare

The metallic glint resolved itself into a wickedly curved blade, held by a figure cloaked in shadows.

"So predictable,Voss," the figure hissed, the voice distorted and unsettling.

"Did you really think you could sneak around unnoticed?"

Lucas chuckled,a sound devoid of humor.

"Honey,I practically invented sneaking around unnoticed. You just haven't met anyone rich enough to do it right."

He subtly adjusted his cufflinks,a barely perceptible shimmer emanating from beneath his impeccably tailored suit.

Before the cloaked figure could respond,Lucas's phone buzzed.

A cryptic message from Isabella Frost, the information broker with a penchant for riddles and exorbitant fees:Golden Goose sings at midnight.

Deck Seven.

"Well, duty calls," Lucas drawled,a smirk playing on his lips.

He glanced at the figure.

"Unless you'd care to join me for a cruise?"

He didn't wait for a reply, turning on his heel and disappearing back into the bustling city streets,Athena, his Valkyrie bodyguard, shadowing him closely.

The Golden Goose.

A ludicrous name for a ludicrously luxurious yacht, currently moored in the city's harbor.

Lucas suspected a trap, his gut churning with a mixture of annoyance and anticipation.

Still,Frost's information was rarely wrong, albeit always delivered with theatrical flair.

He boarded the yacht with Athena, the opulence almost suffocating.

Chandeliers dripped with crystals, the air thick with the scent of expensive perfume and even more expensive desperation.

As they moved through the throng of champagne-sipping socialites,Lucas felt Athena tense beside him.

"Something's not right," she murmured, her hand instinctively reaching for the ornate dagger strapped to her thigh.

"My thoughts exactly," Lucas replied, his eyes scanning the crowd.

They found what they were looking for in a secluded lounge–a discarded data chip, tucked beneath a velvet cushion.

The chip contained encrypted files detailing Shadow organization transactions, confirming Lucas's suspicions about their involvement in the city's recent string of high-profile heists.

But the victory was short-lived.

As Lucas pocketed the chip, the lights flickered, plunging the yacht into momentary darkness.

When the lights returned, the lounge was swarming with Shadow operatives, their faces masked, their weapons drawn.

"Well, well,Voss," a smooth voice echoed from the shadows.

It was Nathaniel Shadow himself, the elusive leader of the organization Lucas had been hunting.

"You walked right into our little snare."

Athena moved with lightning speed, intercepting a blow aimed at Lucas's head.

The clash of steel echoed through the lounge as she engaged the Shadow operatives, her movements a blur of controlled fury.

Lucas watched,a flicker of admiration, and something else, warming his chest.

She moved with the grace of a predator, the lethal efficiency of a seasoned warrior.

Meanwhile,Grace and Daisy,Lucas's tech-savvy twin sidekicks, were trying to provide support remotely.

"Boss,we're jammed!"

Grace's frantic voice crackled through Lucas's earpiece.

"They've got some kind of advanced scrambling tech. We can't get through their firewalls!"

"Plan B,Daisy. Get me eyes on the deck,"

Lucas instructed,dodging a stray bullet.

He pulled out a pair of sleek, customized pistols and joined the fray, covering Athena's flank.

They fought back to back,a seamless dance of attack and defense.

Lucas, despite his playful demeanor, was a force to be reckoned with.

He moved with an almost preternatural awareness, anticipating his opponents'moves before they made them.

"There's an escape route on the starboard side!"

Daisy's voice finally broke through the static.

"But it's heavily guarded."

Lucas exchanged a look with Athena.

A silent understanding passed between them.

He could feel the heat of her body against his as they moved in perfect synchronization, taking down opponents with a combination of brutal efficiency and almost balletic grace.

He smirked.

"Sounds like fun."

They fought their way through the swarming operatives, the air thick with the smell of gunpowder and sweat.

Athena took a glancing blow to the arm,but she didn't flinch, her eyes locked on their target.

They reached the starboard deck, the escape route just a few feet away.

But standing between them and freedom was a hulking figure, wielding a weapon that glowed with an unnatural energy…

"Going somewhere?" the figure rumbled,a cruel smile twisting his lips.

The weapon hummed,a wave of oppressive energy washing over them.

Lucas met Athena's gaze, his expression hardening.

"Not if I can help it."

The metallic glint resolved itself into a wickedly curved blade, held by a figure clad in black from head to toe.

Lucas,unfazed,merely raised an eyebrow.

"And why not?" he drawled, his voice laced with amusement.

He subtly signaled to Sera, who melted into the shadows with practiced ease.

"Because," the figure hissed, stepping closer, "Nathaniel Shadow sends his regards."

Lucas chuckled,a low rumble in his chest.

"Nathaniel? Such a dramatic fellow. Tell him I'll be sure to return the sentiment…personally."

With a speed that belied his casual demeanor,Lucas disarmed the assailant, the blade clattering harmlessly on the cobblestones.

Before the stunned figure could react,Lucas had him pinned against the wall,a hand casually resting on the man's throat.

"Now,be a good lad and tell me where your master is hiding."

The assailant,teeth gritted,spat a curse.

Loyalty to Shadow ran deep, fueled by fear and fanaticism.

Lucas sighed,releasing his grip.

He had expected as much.

Violence wouldn't yield the information he needed.

Subtlety and strategy were required.

Meanwhile,Sera had returned,slipping a data chip into Lucas's hand.

"Grace intercepted a coded message, sir. It mentions a meeting at the Obsidian Club tonight."

Lucas's lips curved into a predatory smile.

"The Obsidian Club…how fitting. Looks like Nathaniel is finally showing himself."

He turned his attention back to the now trembling assailant.

"You're free to go," Lucas said, his voice smooth as silk.

"Tell Nathaniel I'll be joining him for a drink."

Across town,in a dimly lit room,Grace and Daisy were huddled over a computer screen,a flurry of code flashing before their eyes.

"Got it!" Grace exclaimed, punching the air.

"I bypassed their firewall and accessed their internal network.Looks like Shadow is planning something big."

"What kind of big?" Daisy asked, peering at the screen.

"Big enough to level a small city," Grace muttered, her face paling.

She quickly forwarded the information to Lucas.

At the Obsidian Club,Lucas, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, entered the opulent, shadowy space.

Athena, resplendent in a crimson gown, was by his side, her hand lightly resting on his arm.

Beneath the surface of their seemingly casual appearance, both were acutely aware of the danger lurking within the club's velvet-draped walls.

As they moved through the crowd,Lucas felt a prickling sensation on the back of his neck.

He knew they were being watched.

He caught Athena's eye and subtly nodded.

She responded with an almost imperceptible tightening of her grip on his arm,a silent acknowledgment of the shared threat.

In a private booth overlooking the club,Nathaniel Shadow observed Lucas and Athena.

A cruel smile played on his lips.

"The bait has been taken," he murmured to Isabella Frost,a mysterious woman with piercing blue eyes who sat across from him.

Isabella, shrouded in an aura of enigmatic allure, simply smiled, her eyes never leaving Lucas.

"He seems…different," Isabella observed, her voice low and husky.

Nathaniel chuckled.

"He'll learn soon enough that playing with the Shadow organization is a dangerous game." His eyes gleamed with malicious intent.

"Tonight,the hunter becomes the hunted."

As Lucas and Athena were led to a secluded table,Lucas paused, sensing a shift in the atmosphere.

The air crackled with tension.

He knew, with chilling certainty, that he had walked into a trap.

But Lucas Voss never played by anyone's rules.

He was the master of the game, and tonight,he would play it his way.
