"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to flight UA5022 of United Airlines, a member of Star Alliance, bound for Indianapolis. The doors of the plane are now closed. Please turn off your mobile phones and other electronic devices and fasten your seat belts. We will now play the safety video for you. Please watch it carefully. Our crew is here to serve you wholeheartedly. We wish you a pleasant journey. Thank you." A soft female voice announced over the intercom to Liam and Curry.
Today was the day after Christmas. The two were flying back to Indiana. On December 30th, the Bulldogs would be going on the road to challenge Milwaukee State University, and the team would have training sessions upon their return.
The two chatted quietly in their seats, discussing the upcoming schedule after Christmas.
"Coach, when are we going to play Purdue again?" Curry asked.
"It depends. They're in the Big Ten Conference. If they make it to March Madness, we might meet them. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until next season," Liam replied, carefully fastening his seat belt.
The Horizon League doesn't have as many teams, so Butler had to play against teams from other conferences to meet the required number of games in a season.
While they were chatting, Liam noticed a white boy in the front row who kept looking back at them, opening and closing his mouth as if he wanted to say something.
"Excuse me, is there something I can help you with?" Liam asked curiously when the boy turned his head again.
The boy seemed surprised that Liam had spoken to him directly. He leaned back, clearly startled.
Curry also turned sideways, looking at him with interest.
"Hi, Coach L, Stephen, I… I'm also a student at Butler. I noticed you as soon as you got on the plane. Can we take a photo together? Just one will do!" the boy stammered.
Liam burst out laughing. He hadn't expected to meet a fan on the plane. He responded warmly, "Just one? That's not enough. How about one with each of us? Or do you only want a photo with one of us?"
"No, no, no, I'm just worried that I might bother you. Thank you so much!" The boy waved his hands excitedly.
After that, Liam and Curry took a few photos with him. This drew the attention of several other passengers around them. However, since they weren't in Indiana or on the Butler campus, no one else recognized Liam or Curry. After a few curious glances, people returned to their own business.
"Thank you so much. I've watched every Bulldogs game... Coach L, our record this year is fantastic. Do you think we can make it to March Madness? I'm about to graduate, and for the past four years, my biggest wish has been to see the Bulldogs play in the tournament," the boy said with a hopeful look on his face.
Liam was silent for a moment, then nodded slowly, "I promise you, we can make it to March Madness!"
"Awesome! I'll definitely be there to cheer for the team!" The boy clenched his fist slightly, his face turning a bit red with excitement, and turned away contentedly.
Curry leaned his head closer to Liam's ear and whispered with a smile, "Coach, this is the first time I've been recognized outside of school!"
"Do you like this feeling?" Liam asked with a grin.
"Of course! I just felt like a star. Being liked by others... it feels amazing," Curry replied, unable to hide the smile on his face.
"Then keep practicing hard. As long as we keep winning, make it to March Madness, advance to the Round of 32, the Sweet 16... and win the championship, people all over the United States will know you. You'll gain a lot of fans," Liam said slowly.
As he spoke, Curry's eyes filled with hope. "Like Kobe and Wade?"
"Kobe? That's a long way off," Liam chuckled and shook his head. "They're superstars with fans all over the world. NCAA stars are mainly known in the United States. Foreigners don't really watch the NCAA. For example, in Colombia, very few people know about the NCAA."
He paused and looked out the window. "If you want to become a superstar that everyone knows about, you need to go to the NBA. There, you'll face the toughest opponents, the most reliable teammates, and the most intense competition. If you stand out there, you'll become famous all over the world, and your name will be chanted wherever there is a basketball court."
When he finished speaking, Liam smiled.
"So, do you like this feeling, Coach?" Curry asked in return.
"Of course. Who doesn't like being the center of attention?" Liam said with a smile.
"But the NCAA isn't well-known in Colombia. Don't you want people in your hometown to know about it?" Curry asked curiously.
"The plane is about to take off. Passengers, please fasten your seat belts and do not walk in the aisle..." Liam was about to answer when the soft female voice sounded again.
"Buzz——"
The plane started moving and gradually accelerated on the runway. The roar of the engines grew louder and louder until it filled everyone's ears.
After a while, the plane finally climbed smoothly into the sky, and the deafening noise gradually diminished until it disappeared.
Liam looked out the window and said calmly, "That's why I plan to go to the NBA too."
At this moment, the plane rose to the troposphere and flew steadily. The dazzling sunlight shone through the portholes unobstructed, casting a bright light.
More than two hours later, the plane landed at Indianapolis International Airport, and Liam and Curry took a taxi back to the school.
After entering the campus, the two parted ways, and Liam returned to his apartment.
The room, which hadn't been used for three days, had gathered a bit of dust. Liam quickly cleaned it up and went to the supermarket to buy some food to put in the fridge. Only then did he finally have some time to relax.
He collapsed on the sofa, turned on the TV, and flipped through the channels, not knowing what to watch.
In 2006, mobile phones were still basic, and the most popular game was "Warcraft," which wasn't Liam's thing—he only ever played "League of Legends." He had no interest in American TV series, and a deep sense of boredom began to settle in.
"Beep..."
Just as Liam was daydreaming with the TV as background noise, his phone suddenly rang.
He picked it up and saw that it was Mark Baum calling.
"Hello, Mark, how's everything?" he answered.
"Not bad. I just paid last month's premium to Deutsche Bank a few days ago," Mark Baum replied.
Liam smiled and said, "This is the last dark night before dawn. By March next year, or April at the latest, the subprime mortgage market will experience a shock. By then, we won't have to pay out any more money."
"I'm prepared for that… Are you doing anything tomorrow?" Mark asked casually.
"No, to be honest, I'm bored right now."
"Well, do you want to watch an NBA game? I've got two tickets."
