NBA: Built to Dominate

Chapter 31: Chapter 30: Ejection Starts, Flying Hat! Jamison’s Heart is Bitter!

The tension in Verizon Center was electric as Georgetown and North Carolina squared off in a Sweet 16 matchup packed with intrigue. Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison arrived with vengeance on their minds, determined to redeem themselves after their preseason drubbing at the hands of Georgetown. On the other side, Allen Iverson and Alex Mo, Georgetown's twin engines, were eager to maintain their perfect season.

Opening Exchanges: A Show of Strength

The game tipped off with Alex Mo dominating the jump ball, as expected. Georgetown immediately executed their signature play—"Giant Fast Break"—with Iverson launching a perfect quarterback pass to Alex Mo. The towering center sprinted ahead of everyone, catching the pass in stride and slamming it home with authority.

The crowd erupted, setting the tone for what was expected to be a Georgetown showcase.

North Carolina didn't back down, though. Vince Carter calmly responded with a smooth mid-range jumper, and on the next possession, he drilled a deep two-pointer. His confidence was palpable, and his movements carried a message: "We won't go down easily."

Iverson answered in kind, dazzling the defense with a wicked crossover before gliding in for a finger roll. His pace was relentless, leaving the defense scrambling to keep up.

Jamison's Struggles Begin

Eager to make his mark, Jamison found himself isolated beyond the arc. With a quick pump fake and a step-back, he pulled up for a three-pointer.

Big mistake.

Alex Mo, ever-alert, launched himself into the air like a missile. His hand met the ball mid-flight, sending it flying into the stands.

"What a block by Alex Mo!" the commentator shouted. "He's a one-man defensive fortress!"

Jamison stared at the ball's trajectory in disbelief. He'd thought his release was quick enough to evade the towering center's reach, but Alex Mo's timing was perfect.

The crowd roared as Alex Mo wagged his finger Mutombo-style, eliciting laughter and cheers from the home fans.

North Carolina's Defensive Plan Falters

Dean Smith had meticulously prepared for this game, tasking Kevin Salvadori, a 2.13-meter center, to clog the paint and disrupt Alex Mo. Salvadori's size was meant to slow Georgetown's inside dominance.

However, Alex Mo's agility and versatility rendered this strategy useless. He danced around Salvadori on offense, using his speed and footwork to dominate the boards and finish with emphatic dunks. On defense, Salvadori couldn't handle Alex Mo's explosive athleticism, getting outplayed at every turn.

Carter's Lone Heroics

With Jamison struggling, Carter took it upon himself to keep North Carolina in the game. He attacked the rim with reckless abandon, punctuating one drive with a vicious tomahawk dunk over Jerome Williams.

The crowd gasped, and Carter let out a roar, his confidence surging.

But Georgetown adjusted quickly. Iverson funneled Carter into Alex Mo's territory on the next possession. Carter tried to rise above the towering center, hoping to add another highlight dunk to his reel.

Another mistake.

Alex Mo met Carter at the summit, swatting the ball out of bounds with a thunderous block. Carter crashed to the floor, and Alex Mo stood over him briefly, wagging his finger again.

Georgetown Pulls Ahead

By halftime, Georgetown led by 12 points. Iverson orchestrated the offense masterfully, while Alex Mo dominated both ends of the court.

Halftime Score: Georgetown 45, North Carolina 33.

In the North Carolina locker room, Dean Smith rallied his team. "We're not done yet," he said. "Carter, keep attacking. Jamison, I need more from you. Salvadori, hold your ground. Let's fight back."

The Second Half: Jamison's Bitter Reality

North Carolina came out aggressive in the second half, with Carter knocking down a quick three-pointer to cut the deficit. Jamison, however, continued to struggle.

Every attempt to drive or post up was thwarted by Alex Mo's presence. A spin move in the post ended with another thunderous rejection, the ball bouncing off the backboard and into Iverson's hands for a fast-break alley-oop.

By the time Jamison fouled out late in the second half, he had only 8 points on 3-of-13 shooting, along with 3 turnovers and 2 blocks suffered at the hands of Alex Mo.

Walking off the court, Jamison couldn't hide his frustration. He glanced at Carter, who was still fighting valiantly, and shook his head.

The Inevitable Victory

Georgetown cruised to victory, with Alex Mo finishing with 36 points, 22 rebounds, and 9 blocks. His defensive dominance and Iverson's offensive brilliance were too much for North Carolina to handle.

Final Score: Georgetown 81, North Carolina 62.

As Alex Mo and Iverson celebrated with their teammates, the crowd chanted their names. For Mo, this was another step closer to the championship—and another statement to the NBA scouts watching his every move.
