Chapter 268: | 268 | A What?
Within the apex of the Citadel Crown, Echidna found herself facing the ruler of the United World Government, the Authority. He was a handsome, middle-aged man, whose hair was pitch-black. There was no doubt, the one in front of her was a big figure.
Smirking at her, the Authority began the questioning.
"Monster Monarch Echidna... Where do you come from?"
It was a straightforward question, asking for her origins. Echidna thought about it for a moment and calmly answered to the handsome, middle-aged man.
"I am from the Continent of Europa, someone who resides within the Continental Region of Typhon, the land of monsters."
Hearing the answer of Echidna, the Authority scrutinizingly gazed upon the daemoness as if seeking to peer through her mental defenses. However, Echidna was already used to dealing with beings much stronger than her. She was experienced in calming herself down amidst a tense situation.
"I see... Continent of Europa, huh? I previously thought that humanity ruled over that continent, but I guess this make sense. No wonder the Sovereigns rarely leave their domains. Other than their neighboring Sovereigns, they would also have to worry about powerful foreigners."
The Authority's words resounded throughout the office as Echidna instinctively straightened her back. Laplace stood behind the daemoness, maintaining a respectful stance while examining every bit of movement that Echidna made.
"Let's continue, shall we, Echidna? How about you expound to me your identity? Your strength isn't to be underestimated, and don't bother lying to me. I already see through your measures in pretending to be week through lowering the density of your mana."
He smirked while staring at the daemoness. He wasn't interested in games as what he wanted from her was nothing more but answers. Echidna was a treasure throve of information since she came from the Continent of Europa and was perhaps a higher ranking individual over there.
"Apologize, it was an instinct of mine to do so." Echidna slightly bowed, realizing her mistake for trying to make herself seem weaker. It might have been considered as a threat to others, but fortunately, the one before he didn't appear to mind. Taking a deep breath, she explained.
"I am the monarch of the kingdom, Monstra. It was a kingdom I built a couple of years ago to have a peaceful place for myself. Others followed me in my journey, and they became my trusted retinues whom I consider to be my friends."
The Authority looked at Echidna and tap the wooden deck of his table. "A monarch, huh? The kingdom of Monstra, a nation from the Continental Region of Typhon. It is also a newly-created kingdom with powerful monsters or individuals as its foundation." His lips slowly curled up.
"I must say, this is the first I have seen a ruler from that continent, aside from the Sovereigns, of course. I have previously heard that monsters were creatures of mana. Their bodies are considered to be metaphysical, and would break down into mana once killed."
"From your behavior, I can assume that Monstra isn't the only kingdom within the Typhon. Most importantly, your neighbors must be crude and barbaric. It is strange for someone to be in a warlike environment to seek for peace. That continental region shouldn't have the word peace, right?"
"Did you introduce it to your fellow monster species, and did they understand it?" The Authority's question were long and intricate, yet Echidna fully understood them word by word. Time was running out for her as the man in front of her was beginning to dig deeper into her identity.
After some thought, she decided to mix truth with lies. "Yes, I was the one that introduced it to them. At first, they didn't understand the concept of peace. But through time and after following me, they became adept of its concept."
"I learned of peace from a human. She was stubborn, kind, and a pacifist through and through. She was a pacifist to a fault, a glaring problem of herself. When the two of us met, it was difficult to understand each other. Monsters were savages to humans, and humans were food to them."
"This human must have been your best friend." The Authority softly smiled, making Echidna somewhat relieved in her heart. However, his following words made her heart slightly pound out of her chest. "May I hear of her name?"
Echidna was confused at first, but promptly answered his question. "Her name was Shirayuri, an ordinary human village girl." Although she responded, her eyes instinctively avoided his gaze. It was suspicious, but he didn't pay it any heed. After all, the truth would be unfolded sooner or later.
"Hm... Thank you for answering my questions, Echidna-san." Using his vast knowledge of the former world, the Authority conjectured that Shirayuri must have been a Japanese. While it was difficult to believe that other reincarnators existed aside from him, it wasn't an impossibility.
"W-what?" Echidna was dumbfounded, unable to believe the word that had escaped the mouth of the Authority. She didn't think it would be easily seen through, unless... Her eyes immediately widened as she gazed upon the middle-aged man who was smirking at her.
"Echidna, or should I say, Shirayuri-san? Someone from the island country of Japan."
As his words resounded in his office, Laplace was also a bit astounded by the revelation. The existence of other countries within the former modern world wasn't hidden from the public. These countries were often represented by their medias.
With the animation industry in the rise, Anime was soared high within the populace as a desired media. The ever-more curious Laplace watched these Animes and understood that they originated from a country called Japan.
Even the formal remarked of her husband reminded her of those medias.
Wait? Did her husband also watched those animations? Thoughts flooded into Laplace's mind as her interest regarding the animation media was supposed to be a secret. But to think that her husband would have the same interest as her.
"Y-you! Are you also a reincarnator, like me? No wonder your nation was filled with technologies of our former world." Echidna finally understood the identity of the middle-aged man in front of her. The ruler of the United World Government was a reincarnator, a modern human just like her.
"Where did you come from? Are you also a Japanese like me?" She was excited as it was difficult to hide knowledge that wasn't supposed to be kept inside. Her identity as a Japanese wasn't something she could abandon, so she couldn't throw it away with ease.
No matter how much she shackled her identity of the past. It remained, constantly echoing throughout her mind and reminding her of who she really was. Perhaps, it may be for this reason why she managed to keep her sanity after becoming a monster.
"I am not a Japanese, Shirayuri-san. I'm Abraham Shepherd, an American." Abraham properly introduced himself to the seemingly excited Echidna. Her excitement was understandable as even though they were an ocean apart. There was no doubt they were humans of the modern world.
"An American, huh? The Hamburger Country?" Echidna tilted her head while Abraham's smile broke apart in mere seconds. To think that the US of A would be nothing more but the hamburger country in the eyes of others. How much have they fallen?
"Well, yeah... You aren't wrong about that." Abraham wryly smiled at the daemoness while barely maintaining his dignity. Echidna's eyes weren't even bothering to hide her enthusiasm anymore as it was pretty pronounced to the middle-aged man.
"I worked for a company as an office lady before a truck hit me out of nowhere. How about you? How did you die, Abraham-san?" Echidna questioned with anticipation, wanting to know what brought Abraham into the primordial world.
Abraham, on the other hand, felt complicated as his death in the former world was a heavy secret he kept within himself. The only other person who knew of it was none other than his wife, Laplace. Although a long time had passed since his reincarnation, it remained a heavy memory of his life.
Noticing the hesitation of the middle-aged man, Echidna shook her head and remarked. "Scratch that! It's good to see you, Abraham-san. I thought that I would be alone in the primordial world. Even though, I was fortunate to have made friends with the monsters who followed me."
"I am content to have another reincarnator in this primordial world." Echidna stood up from her chair with her eyes blazing with determination. Before Abraham could respond, an intelligence officer arrived into the office of the Authority with an important report at hand.
The intelligence officer straightened their backs and saluted before reporting to Abraham.
"Sir, several foreign objects are heading towards the Citadel in the same velocity as the former incursion. Shall we deploy the military once again to make contact with the foreigners?" The intelligence officer calmly questioned after giving the report.
"T-Those must be my subordinates. They might be worried when I didn't immediately return to the kingdom." Echidna muttered to herself, which were heard by both Laplace and Abraham. Nodding at his wife, Abraham made a decision. "No need for another deployment of the military."
"We would be wasting too much resources for false deployments."
"Me and my wife will be meeting the foreigners and handling them. Just prepare yourselves for the worst, but no deployment shall come unless ordered." Abraham instructed the intelligence officer, who nodded in understanding before leaving the office.
Turning his attention to Echidna, Abraham stated. "I'll be expecting you to keep your subordinates in line, Echidna-san." Discover exclusive tales on My Virtual Library Empire
"I shall do my best, Abraham-san." Echidna's eyes remained ablaze with resolve, which made the middle-aged man feel somewhat complicated. Meanwhile, Laplace merely lightly chuckled in the background. It seemed that there were people that his husband found difficult to handle.
