Naruto: Uchiha's Resolve

Chapter 29: Chapter:29

Ever since the Hidden Cloud Village negotiations concluded and the body of Senju Tobirama was returned to Konoha, the village had been drenched in unrelenting rain. It was as if the heavens themselves mourned the passing of the Second Hokage.

The Senju family spared no expense in honoring Tobirama's memory. They commissioned a luxurious coffin made of golden nanmu wood, imported at great cost from the Land of Fire. Crafted by a renowned artisan whose family had served the Fire Daimyo for generations, such a coffin was usually reserved for royalty.

Tragically, by the time Tobirama could receive this honor, his body bore the unmistakable marks of decay, emitting a faint stench of death.

Under the meticulous organization of Uzumaki Mito, preparations for the funeral proceeded smoothly. News of Tobirama's death soon reached the Land of Fire Daimyo, prompting a dramatic display of grief. The daimyo wept openly, declaring his sorrow so profound that he had to halt court proceedings for three days to mourn.

"The bond between Konoha and the Land of Fire is unbreakable," he proclaimed, earning praise for his magnanimity. As a gesture of respect, he sent his eldest son to attend the funeral, accompanied by a generous offering of condolences.

The dignitaries who received Konoha's invitations also made appearances, each bringing substantial gifts to honor the fallen hero.

The funeral itself was a grand affair, as befitted a Hokage.

At the center of the mourning hall rested Tobirama's ornate golden coffin. A portrait of the Second Hokage was displayed on the altar, surrounded by an incense burner, candles, and his favorite foods as offerings.

White wreaths encircled the room, adding to the somber atmosphere.

The ceremony began with a traditional ritual.

"Break the jar!"

Senju Haruto, standing solemnly before the coffin, shattered a ceremonial vessel with a loud crack. Then, kneeling, he let out a piercing wail of grief.

As Tobirama had no children of his own, Haruto, as his closest living relative, fulfilled the traditional role of leading the mourning rites. After the symbolic gesture of burning paper money, the next step was to open the coffin.

Four strong members of the Senju clan lifted Tobirama's coffin and carried it toward the Konoha cemetery. Each of them had been personally close to the Second Hokage, and their faces reflected their profound sorrow.

Behind the procession, drums and gongs sounded a mournful rhythm. As the coffin passed through Konoha's streets, villagers lined both sides to pay their final respects.

Tobirama was widely respected in Konoha. Though his demeanor had been cold and unyielding, his contributions to the village were undeniable. From shaping its institutions to fortifying its defenses, his legacy was woven into the fabric of Konoha.

Crowds gathered despite the rain, their faces wet with tears as they bade farewell to the man who had given his all for their safety and prosperity.

"Teacher, may you rest in peace," whispered Sarutobi Hiruzen, standing among the mourners. Tears streamed down his face as he recalled the sacrifices Tobirama had made, including saving his life.

"Teacher…" Danzo Shimura's voice choked with regret. "I wish I could have seen you off properly."

The pair had initially volunteered to carry Tobirama's coffin, even offering to perform the ceremonial jar-breaking. However, Haruto, acting on behalf of the Senju clan, had dismissed their requests outright.

"You two are lucky to even attend," Haruto had said coldly. "You've done enough harm already."

While Sarutobi and Danzo accepted their exclusion with some semblance of grace, the sting of rejection was undeniable.

The funeral procession finally reached the cemetery, where a pre-dug grave awaited.

Amid fresh cries of grief, Tobirama's coffin was lowered into the ground. One by one, members of the Senju clan knelt to offer their final respects, their foreheads pressing against the cold earth.

After the formal rites, other attendees stepped forward. Carrying white flowers, they placed them in front of Tobirama's grave as a final tribute.

The solemnity of the burial gave way to a different kind of gathering: the funeral banquet.

In a tradition as old as Konoha itself, the Senju clan hosted a grand feast, setting up over a hundred tables to accommodate the guests. Despite the occasion, the mood at the banquet was lively. For many, it was an opportunity to network and strengthen alliances.

Uchiha Hirito attended the feast with relish. He sat at one of the central tables, his plate piled high with delicacies prepared by the best chefs in Konoha.

"The food here is excellent," he remarked to no one in particular, savoring a bite. His status ensured that no one dared interrupt his meal, even as he overheard whispers of political intrigue around him.

One of his most notable conversations that day was with the eldest son of the Fire Daimyo. The young noble had sought Hirito out, eager to establish rapport with the powerful head of the Uchiha clan.

Their exchange, though cordial, was laced with political subtext. Both understood the importance of fostering alliances in a village that was rapidly shifting toward its next chapter.

Meanwhile, Haruto kept a watchful eye on the interactions at the banquet. While the funeral itself was a success, he couldn't shake the unease creeping into his thoughts.

Konoha's future lay in selecting a new Hokage—a decision that loomed larger with each passing day.

"The era of Tobirama is over," Haruto muttered to himself. "Now we must prepare for what comes next."

A few days later, Konoha convened a council to determine its Third Hokage.

As the village gathered to make this critical decision, the air was thick with anticipation. Alliances would be tested, rivalries reignited, and the fate of Konoha would hang in the balance once more.
