Chapter 33: Ch -33 : Hanzo attack
Originally, the team was to include Kato Dan and an elite jounin named Mumu Gadao. Known for his strength and loyalty to Hiruzen Sarutobi, Mumu was a powerful ally. However, both he and Dan had been sent on a secret mission with another jounin, leaving their team slightly undermanned.
"Let's discuss our next steps. The troops sent to attack Yugakure's rear forces have likely been almost wiped out," Mito Kadoyan sighed heavily, addressing the three ninjas before him.
"Master Yan, it might not have been wise to provoke Hanzo at this stage," Tsunade replied, shaking her head. "Judging by the situation, it seems our forces ran straight into Hanzo himself."
As one of the foremost experts in medical ninjutsu, Tsunade was well aware of the dangers posed by Hanzo's poison. Known for its highly corrosive nature, it was nearly impossible to counteract quickly. Even Tsunade herself had yet to develop a rapid antidote, and could only rely on advanced chakra control to expel the toxin from her own system. While she had trained a few medical ninjas since arriving in the Land of Rain, only a handful had managed to learn this technique.
Hanzo's poison was as deadly as it was widespread, able to cover large portions of the battlefield. Given his skill, quantity was meaningless against him; his poison rendered most of Konoha's numerical advantages useless. Tsunade couldn't help but fear that few, if any, of the raiding team members would make it back alive.
"If we'd followed Orochimaru's strategy from the start," Jiraiya spoke up, "and struck at Sunagakure while trying to ally with Amegakure, Chiyo of Sunagakure would be the one feeling the pressure now."
Jiraiya shook his head, casting a look at Orochimaru, whom he considered the smartest and most talented among them. However, Orochimaru sat quietly, his expression shadowed as if lost in thought.
"My choice may have been a mistake," Mito Kadoyan admitted, glancing at Orochimaru. "When deciding to go after Yugakure first, I thought attacking a smaller, neighboring power would be safer. But hindsight..."
Interrupting, Orochimaru finally broke his silence. "Now is not the time to discuss past decisions."
"What concerns me now," Orochimaru continued, his voice low, "is how Yuyin Village managed to detect our movements so accurately."
The room fell silent. Each shinobi turned to look at Orochimaru, awaiting his insights.
"Do you mean there's a spy?" Mito Kadoyan asked with a frown, already mentally reviewing a list of potential suspects.
"That's not the main concern," Orochimaru replied, shaking his head. "If Yuyin Village has been tracking our movements, then it's likely they know about Kato Dan and Mumu Gadao as well."
Tsunade's face paled as she realized what he was implying. "Are you saying Hanzo might target them?"
Everyone in the room understood Hanzo's strength. Kato Dan's power lay primarily in his Spirit Transformation Technique, but even he, an elite jounin, would struggle against Hanzo in direct combat. Surviving a battle with Hanzo was almost impossible.
"No," Orochimaru said, his tone sharper. "If I were Hanzo, I'd take advantage of Konoha's temporary weakness and launch a full-scale assault on our camp. Eliminating our base would be the best way to secure victory."
His words sent a shockwave through the room, as each person realized the gravity of the situation. If Hanzo attacked Konoha's camp directly, it would mark a disastrous defeat on the battlefield in the Land of Rain.
"I'll get the camp defenses set immediately," Mito Kadoyan declared, standing up. But Tsunade, her gaze troubled, shook her head.
"It may already be too late," she murmured.
Just then, a breathless ninja burst into the command room. "Master Yan, everyone! Our sentries have detected the main forces of Yuyin Village approaching the camp. They're only a few kilometers away!"
The weight of the situation hung heavy in the air. After a moment of tense silence, Mito Kadoyan spoke again. "You all take the remaining troops and retreat. I'll stay behind to delay Hanzo's forces and cover your escape."
"Your bravery is admirable, Elder Yan," Orochimaru said without hesitation, "but Hanzo's strength is far beyond what a single jounin can hold off alone."
"The three of us will stay," he continued, exchanging a look with Jiraiya and Tsunade. "Elder Yan, gather the rest of the forces and retreat to a safe distance. Then, gather elite reinforcements and rendezvous with Dan and Gadao."
"We'll need our forces to target Hanzo's home base while he's occupied here. It's our only chance to draw him out."
Mito Kadoyan looked conflicted, but he couldn't deny the soundness of Orochimaru's plan. Tsunade and Jiraiya stood up as well, prepared to face the danger ahead.
Tsunade added, "I'm the only one here who can detoxify during a battle. If I don't stay, there's no way we can withstand Hanzo for long."
Jiraiya nodded firmly. "I'm with you all the way."
Tsunade looked at Mito Kadoyan and said, "Elder Yan, I can only protect myself and two others from the poison. Let us handle this."
With a solemn nod, Mito Kadoyan acknowledged their decision. "The three of you are indeed our best hope," he said, his voice laced with pride. "Return alive, for the village depends on you."
He left the command room to organize the retreat, leaving Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru to prepare themselves mentally for the coming battle.
---
Meanwhile, the three of them knew how grave this fight would be. Hanzo of the Salamander wasn't just any enemy. His lethal combination of poison techniques, unparalleled combat skills, and commanding presence would be a challenge unlike any they'd ever faced.
As Konoha's brightest hopes, each carried the weight of their village on their shoulders. Tsunade, the best medical-nin of her generation, would fight not only with her strength but also with her invaluable ability to counteract Hanzo's poison. Jiraiya's skill and tenacity, paired with Orochimaru's cold, calculating brilliance, made them a formidable trio. If anyone could stand a chance against Hanzo, it was these three.
The dark, rainy skies of the Land of Rain mirrored the uncertainty they faced. Every step they took toward the approaching forces carried with it the silent question of whether they'd return. Yet, their resolve was unwavering, each one silently vowing to protect their village or fall trying.
With renewed determination, Tsunade gripped her weapon tightly, Orochimaru's face remained impassive, and Jiraiya's jaw set in a hardened line. They were ready for whatever was to come, be it victory or sacrifice.
