Chapter 23: Chapter 23
"It seems I don't need to agree just yet, but you can tell me your request. If you're asking us to help collect your body and give you a burial, that may be difficult. Tobita Yuichi's mission for Konoha is clear: eliminate all bandits, collect your head and any stolen wealth, and return it to Tobita Yuichi," Haruto said, his expression blank.
Okamoto Ichiro sighed, his darkened face reflecting helplessness.
"We considered resisting, but the ones who released us from the mines were ninjas from the Sand Village. I know all too well that we can't stand against ninja strength. You could raise an entire mining area just by working together. If we try to fight, few of us will survive."
Raise an entire mine? Haruto's face remained calm, but he felt slightly awkward.
They lacked that kind of power; Kato Dan might have managed it, though. If he guessed right, it was earth-style ninjutsu, an Earthquake Core technique. Stones in the mine were much harder than the surface soil, requiring multiple ninja to execute the jutsu. The lead ninja had to be someone skilled in manipulating earth chakra.
Okamoto Ichiro continued.
"The treasure we took from Yuichi Tobita was too much. My men only managed to take a small portion when we left; the rest is stashed in the basement of the third room, east to west, in the village."
"My request is that after taking my head, you ninja leave the rest of the villagers in peace. No need to worry about Yuichi Tobita; I've already told my men to change their names and scatter across the Land of Fire. It'd be difficult to catch them all."
Haruto didn't respond immediately. Instead, he looked to his two teammates for their opinions.
"Haruto, you usually have the best ideas, so go ahead and decide," Inuzuka Ryo said, straightforwardly.
Aburame Nami nodded silently.
"In that case, I agree. After the task is done, I'll burn this mountain stronghold down and tell Yuichi Tobita that you all perished in the fire."
Haruto nodded at Okamoto Ichiro, then handed the wakizashi in his hand to Inuzuka Ryo.
"Ryo, I'll leave things here to you. Nami and I will go check on the hidden treasure."
Inuzuka Ryo took the wakizashi, giving Okamoto Ichiro, who still sat resolutely, a conflicted look.
"Uncle Okamoto, I'm sorry. If I ever gain the strength, I'll never let this happen to others."
With that, Inuzuka Ryo raised the blade high.
Ichiro Okamoto smiled and closed his eyes.
…
…
At the basement entrance, insects crawled out and quickly flew into Aburame Nami's wide sleeves.
"Are there any traps inside?" Haruto asked.
Nami shook her head lightly.
"We'll count the loot separately once inside."
"Understood."
Nami remained as terse as ever.
After the two finished counting, Inuzuka Ryo entered the treasure-filled basement, carrying the blood-stained wakizashi and Tiewan.
"Is it done?" Haruto asked, turning from the antiques in his hand to look at Inuzuka Ryo.
"Yes." Inuzuka Ryo lifted a box and handed the wakizashi back to Haruto.
"How did you count the treasure?"
"Excluding antiques and hard-to-value items, I calculated 1,723,000 taels," Haruto replied, then turned to Aburame Nami.
"One million, one hundred and eighty thousand taels," Nami responded in her usual brief manner.
"That makes 3,003,000 taels—330,000 taels less than Tobita Yuichi expected," Haruto noted.
"So, should we just tell Tobita Yuichi that 330,000 taels were used up by the bandits?" Inuzuka Ryo scratched his head.
"No. More accurately, 1,130,000 taels were consumed by the bandits, but the antiques, paintings, pearls, and agates are still intact."
"Haruto, you're thinking of..."
Inuzuka Ryo's eyes widened before he gave a sheepish grin. "Maybe we should report 1,830,000 taels. Then the remaining 1,500,000 taels would be perfect for the three of us to split."
Haruto flashed a thumbs-up, his face showing a look of approval. "Ryo, you're on point!"
"Hehe, Haruto, you're pretty cunning too!"
…
At the Lord's Mansion in Tieshi Town, Tobita Yuichi took the box from Ryo Inuzuka, inspected its contents, then handed it to a servant. He looked at the other treasures with a big smile—until he finished counting.
"Excuse me, but do you think the recovered amount seems... a bit low?"
"Low?" Before Haruto could respond, Inuzuka Ryo stepped up.
"That's everything we found in the village, right, Tiewan?"
"Woof! Woof!" Tiewan happily wagged his tail, tongue out as he swayed from side to side.
"What a pity, but I'm afraid the bandits used some of it, and we just couldn't get it back," Inuzuka Ryo said with a regretful expression.
"Is that so? But I still have one concern: the mission required a full extermination, so why do I only have Ichiro Okamoto's head? Where are the others?"
Tobita Yuichi eyed Inuzuka Ryo suspiciously.
Haruto placed a hand on Ryo's shoulder and stepped forward to answer Tobita.
"Your mission requirements included submitting this head and the recovered treasures. While it did call for extermination, there was no mention of needing evidence. I feared leaving the bodies could cause a plague, so I burned them along with the stronghold."
"Oh, is that right? But even if burned, surely something remains as proof. I'm adding a new request: bring back those remains as evidence."
"Lord Tobita," Haruto's face darkened.
"Are you suggesting that something would remain? I am an Uchiha! Uchiha's Fire Style is the most powerful in the ninja world. Burned by our flames, and you think anything would be left?"
