Chapter 11: chapter 11
After explaining the follow-up training methods and his experiences with fire-natured chakra, Uchiha Retsu had given Haruto a solid understanding of the Uchiha clan's Fire Release techniques and the direction for his future training.
Retsu had shared more than usual because he saw great potential in Haruto, believing that this young Uchiha could become a valuable asset to the clan in the future. By the end of the lesson, Retsu even invited Haruto to stay for dinner.
"Grandpa Retsu, it's too much trouble for you. Please, let me help clean up the dishes," Haruto said, eager to show his appreciation.
Retsu sat at the table, a smile on his face as he watched Haruto, who still had a youthful innocence in his expression. The evening had brought the two closer.
"My wife passed away long ago, and my son, who lacked talent, died on the battlefield twenty years ago. I live alone now, so it's not a bother at all. Having you here makes the house feel lively," Retsu said.
Haruto, suddenly realizing the sensitive nature of the topic, stood up quickly and apologized, "I'm so sorry, Grandpa Retsu! I didn't mean to—"
Retsu waved his hand to stop him, interrupting gently. "There's no need to apologize, Haruto. I brought it up myself. You remind me of your father. When he graduated from the ninja academy, the First Hokage had just passed away, and the Ninja World War hadn't yet begun. Your father and I served together in the police force, and his mentor was your great-uncle. Our families have always been close, so calling me Grandpa is more than appropriate."
Haruto blinked, surprised at the mention of his great-uncle. His parents had mentioned that his great-uncle had been a powerful Uchiha, but he had passed away shortly after Haruto was born.
"My great-uncle?"
"Yes," Retsu nodded, "His name was Uchiha Kagami. Like the current Hokage, he was a student of the Second Hokage, Senju Tobirama. Kagami was the strongest Uchiha of his generation, and if it weren't for the fact that he was Tobirama's disciple—Tobirama being the one responsible for killing Uchiha Madara's brother—he might have led the Uchiha clan."
Retsu sighed, lost in memories of the past. "Kagami's son, Uchiha Tatsu, didn't have much talent as a shinobi, but his family just welcomed a new member last month—a boy named Shisui."
Haruto froze, realizing what Retsu had just revealed. He was related to Uchiha Kagami, and the famous Shisui of the Body Flicker, who would later become legendary, had just been born. This revelation added another layer to Haruto's perception of his own place in the Uchiha clan.
"Ah, old age brings nostalgia," Retsu chuckled, shaking off the memories. "It's almost time. The clan meeting is tonight, and you'll join me. We can clean up the table when we return."
Retsu stood up, patted his stomach, and headed for the door as if taking a leisurely stroll. Haruto followed closely behind, feeling the weight of the evening ahead.
Nightfall. Nanga Shrine.
The Uchiha clan meeting was about to begin. As one of the highest-ranking Jonin with his Three Tomoe Sharingan, Uchiha Retsu sat in the front row, along with other elders and elite members of the clan. The first and second rows were filled with prominent figures like him—elders and experienced Jonin.
Newcomers like Haruto, on the other hand, sat in the back rows. If he hadn't awakened his Sharingan, he wouldn't have even been allowed to attend the meeting.
At the front of the room stood Uchiha Fugaku, bearing replicas of the Uchiha clan's most famous weapons—the Gunbai and the scythe. The originals had been taken by Uchiha Madara when he left Konoha decades ago. These replicas were created to symbolize the authority of the clan leader. Though they looked impressive, their power was but a fraction of the originals.
During his meal with Retsu, Haruto had learned that these monthly clan meetings were usually uneventful. Most discussions revolved around routine matters: the clan's finances, reports on businesses owned by the Uchiha, and updates on clan members who had awakened the Sharingan or advanced in rank. Most of the time, these topics were dull enough to put people to sleep.
But tonight felt different.
As Retsu had predicted, the first half of the meeting was mundane, filled with reports about finances and routine clan matters. But the mood shifted when Fugaku began summarizing the recent casualties from the battlefield.
Among the fallen were Haruto's parents, Chiji and Rina.
"These fallen clan members are heroes, both to the village and to the Uchiha. They have proven Uchiha's courage and honor with their lives!" Fugaku declared.
Every Uchiha present stood tall and straight, filled with a sense of pride. For the Uchiha, anything related to their reputation, honor, or strength stirred deep emotions. The clan's long history instilled a sense of duty and pride in all of its members, much like how learning about a nation's long history can fill one with a profound sense of belonging.
"But…" Fugaku's tone darkened. "Some people would tarnish the honor our ancestors worked for thousands of years to build—all for their own selfish gain!"
Murmurs erupted through the audience. Uchiha members exchanged puzzled and worried glances.
"Clan leader, what happened?" one asked.
"Who would dare tarnish Uchiha's honor?"
Fugaku stood confidently at the center, satisfied by the uproar. The more agitated the clan members became, the more it served his purpose.
But before Fugaku could continue, an elder spoke up. The elder was Uchiha Setsuna, a man in his fifties who had seized significant power in the clan after the previous leader's death. Setsuna and a group of senior elders had used Fugaku's inexperience to control much of the clan's affairs.
"Fugaku, be careful with your words," Setsuna warned. "Everyone here is an elite of the Uchiha clan. I don't believe any of us would do anything to shame our ancestors."
(End of the Chapter).
