Chapter 11: Chapter 11: White Fang's Invitation
After the written exam, it was time for the practical assessment.
For first-year students, this part was straightforward, consisting of only one test: shuriken throwing.
The training field was already set up with a row of targets, waiting for the students to test their skills one by one.
The scoring rules were simple:
Each student had ten shuriken to throw.
One point for hitting the first ring, two points for the second, and so on, up to ten points for a bullseye.
The maximum score was 100 points.
"Hatake Kakashi, 100 points."
"Might Guy, 69 points."
"Nohara Rin, 67 points."
"Nagano, 83 points."
Nagano strutted back to the line with a smug look, throwing a middle finger in Obito's direction.
"Tch."
Obito clicked his tongue, muttering a few choice curses under his breath.
"Next, Uchiha Obito!"
Hearing his name, Obito perked up, striding confidently to the target.
The supervising teacher chuckled upon seeing him.
"Oh, it's you again."
While it wasn't uncommon for students to miss their mark, Obito was infamous for being the only one who managed to miss every single shot—truly one of a kind.
The teacher, clearly wary, offered a reminder.
"Kid, aim properly this time, alright? And please, no more aiming at my face!"
Obito smirked, tilting his head slightly with a playful grin.
"Sensei, you underestimate me."
He straightened his back dramatically.
"Three days apart, and you should treat me like a new man. My goal today is—perfection!"
With his proclamation made, Obito unleashed his throws with a flurry of "whoosh" sounds.
Having achieved the level of a Genin in taijutsu and putting in diligent practice recently, his accuracy had improved significantly.
When he finished, the teacher glanced at the target and announced in surprise:
"Uchiha Obito, 90 points. You've made significant progress, kid."
"Uh…"
Obito scratched his head sheepishly. He'd been boasting about a perfect score, but two of his throws had gone slightly astray.
Oh well, as long as I don't feel embarrassed, it's fine, even if I messed up my moment to shine!
In truth, 90 points was an impressive score.
Aside from Kakashi, that was among the top scores of the day.
Once everyone had finished, a teacher announced loudly:
"The results of the annual exam will be released in a week. In the meantime, there will be no assignments. Take this week to relax!"
The students erupted into cheers before the teacher could finish.
"Woohoo!"
"Yatta!"
…
Rin sidled up to Obito, her large eyes sparkling.
"Obito, do you have any plans for the break?"
Obito thought for a moment before shaking his head.
"Not really. Maybe we could—"
(Why not come over to my place? It's pretty spacious.)
Just as he was about to invite her to hang out at his house, an unexpected figure approached them.
Rin blinked in surprise before beaming.
"Kakashi, we were just talking about plans for the break. Want to join us?"
Kakashi ignored Rin completely, turning to Obito.
"My father wants to invite you to dinner at our house. Tonight at 7."
As soon as Kakashi finished speaking, a system prompt appeared before Obito:
[Option 1: Who needs an old man when I have a cute girl? Decline the invitation. Reward: +1 Cool Point.]
[Option 2: Women only slow down my sword-drawing speed. Accept and learn kenjutsu from White Fang! Reward: Unlock a follow-up mission.]
Huh?
This was the first time Obito had seen a reward for unlocking a follow-up mission.
After a brief moment of hesitation, he chose Option 2.
"Alright. Please thank your father for the invitation."
Kakashi nodded.
He turned slightly toward Rin, giving her a brief nod as a greeting, before walking away without another word.
Obito glanced at the somewhat deflated Rin and pretended to grumble.
"That Kakashi guy is as cold as ever. How could he treat our adorable Rin like that?"
Rin blushed, her cheeks turning pink.
"Obito, stop teasing me!"
"I'm not teasing," Obito replied earnestly. "Rin is the cutest in my eyes."
After successfully cheering her up, Obito headed home.
Since he'd be out for dinner, he needed to inform his grandma.
…
At 6:30 in the evening, Obito left his house, humming as he walked.
"The moon hangs high, and a meeting awaits…"
"Too bad it's not with a beautiful big sister, but a middle-aged man instead."
Still, he couldn't help but wonder.
Why had White Fang invited him over?
The most likely explanation was that Sakumo had heard about Obito supporting him in that recent debate.
Maybe he thought Obito was a promising junior, hence the dinner invitation.
Lost in thought, Obito soon arrived at Kakashi's house.
Outside the modest yet cozy home, a figure stood waiting.
Obito waved as he approached.
"I'm here, Kakashi!"
"Mm."
Kakashi gave a curt response and turned, heading inside without a backward glance.
"Follow me."
Curious, Obito followed, glancing around at the simple yet warm furnishings.
A quick glance at the wall revealed a photo of a young Kakashi—an adorably fluffy silver-haired kid.
The sound of footsteps interrupted his thoughts.
A silver-haired man emerged from the house.
Although his face bore traces of fatigue, his demeanor was dignified, with an unshakable air of charisma.
Hatake Sakumo!
He smiled warmly at Obito.
"You must be Obito. I've heard quite a bit about you from Kakashi."
Obito nodded, slightly bashful.
"Good evening, White Fang-senpai. I'm Obito. I bet Kakashi's told you all about my embarrassing moments, hasn't he?"
Kakashi's cheeks flushed slightly under his mask, while Sakumo chuckled, ruffling his son's hair.
"Not embarrassing, exactly. Just a few amusing anecdotes."
"Come, let's eat while we chat," Sakumo said, gesturing toward the dining table.
"I've prepared a few of my specialty dishes. Let me know if they suit your taste."
Obito nodded eagerly—he was starving!
As they settled at the table, Obito stole a glance at Sakumo.
It was hard to reconcile this gentle, smiling man with the legendary warrior feared across the battlefield.
Sakumo noticed his unease and smiled.
"Don't just sit there staring. Try the food and let me know how it is."
Obito didn't need any more encouragement. He picked up a piece of sweet-and-sour pork and took a bite. His eyes lit up as the rich flavors exploded in his mouth.
"Delicious!"
Sakumo's smile widened.
"Eat as much as you like. There's plenty more in the kitchen. No need to hold back here."
"Yosh!" Obito grinned, digging in with gusto.
