Chapter 148: Chapter 146: Nono Yakushi and Kabuto Yakushi
The next day, Ryu reached the medical training centre. He entered the class assigned to him. However, they were surprised to see a kid there.
One of the future medical officers recognised Ryu and exclaimed, "Hey, isn't he the top scorer of the first-year midterm assessment at the Ninja Academy? My younger brother was in his class, so I remember him."
Just then, before anyone could ask anything further, one familiar face entered the room.
"Hello everyone. I am Nono Yakushi, and I will introduce you to the medical course."
"Oh, Ryu... how are you? Dr. Yuki informed me that you would be here." Nono said.
Everyone looked at him. Someone from the last bench said, "The new teacher knows this kid."
Everyone had various thoughts running through their minds, but one individual voiced out, "Just another case of nepotism."
When Nono Yakushi listened to the gossip, she turned serious and said, "All of you rest assured, people not talented in medical ninjutsu will not get past the orientation classes and have to opt for subjects other than medical ninjutsu as their main subject."
She then looked at Ryu and said, "Even him.".
She continued, "He is recommended by another doctor. I admit that he is too young compared to you all. He was recommended because he had shown talent in medical ninjutsu. And one more thing: unlike what you all think, he is not a nepotism baby. Actually, he is an orphan."
She said all that with a harsh tone in her voice. As the head of an orphanage, she understood the plight of someone who had no family to look after. So she defended Ryu from a misunderstanding she had unintentionally created.
"If I saw anyone pestering this kid just because they are young, that person would find themselves outside this programme. Is that clear?" Nono warned.
Everyone in the room nodded. Ryu thought., "Damn... she is even scarier than Mother Yuki when angered."
Ryu expressed his gratitude with a nod, "Thank you, Dr. Nono."
"You can call me Nono-sensei from now on. And its all right, this is the least I could do for all the help Dr. Yuki has provided to my orphanage. We will talk after the orientation class." Nono replied.
Nono glanced at the class and asked, "I assume everyone here is already aware of the critical role medical units play, correct?"
Everyone nodded, and Dr. Nono explained, "The main unit that supports ninja teams is the one that can perform [Healing Hand Jutsu]. If a ninja can execute this jutsu on the battlefield, they can serve as a combat medic, even without full medical expertise."
In the back, some could be heard talking. "So this kid must be aiming for the combat medic title. He is top of his class; I am sure he is very skilled in ninja arts, as he is in the S-class."
"He is from S-Class!" one exclaimed.
S-Class produces the top cream of ninjas every year. Most of them become at least special Jonins, and some become elite Jonins. So expectations from this class were high from everyone, and anyone from this class commanded respect. They were surprised to find the top of this class among them.
Dr. Nono continued with her orientation, ignoring the chatter, "But basis in [Healing Hand Jutsu] is not everything. Most of the time on the battlefield, it can only buy time or just patch up the wounded for them to be delivered to proper medical units. That's where we come in. The actual experts with extensive knowledge and training."
"Even if one is not skilled in healing hand jutsu, there are many other fields in medical units like toxicology, herbology, and many more. Those in here who do not pass the required chakra control test will be shifted to such other units. But under no circumstances underestimate those who do not pass this test and are shifted. In totality, these other units save more lives than the combat medic units and non-combat healing units combined, especially in peacetime."
Everyone nodded again, finally relaxing hearing that everyone here will become part of something significant even if they fail.
Dr. Nono continued, "Many here are actually seniors from such other units that are here to test their chakra control to finally enter the healing unit, so for this reason also you shouldn't worry, as you can try again. If you have a good head on your shoulders, you will be fine in other units as well. Most of the work is intellectual rather than physical, unlike ninja training. So just study hard."
Everyone nodded, and Dr. Nono smiled and added, "At least this batch is motivated. Everyone is attentive."
"Let's start," she said and took a scroll. Ryu was more attentive than others, but when she took out the scroll, he became more attentive.
When she opened the scroll on her table, Ryu captured the scroll in his memory in a few seconds.
Recording scroll
30%... 60%... 80%... 100%
It was fast and easy, as he was sitting right in front of her.
- Decoding the captured seal
- Similarities found with storage scroll
- Complete decoding failed
- Not enough information
Realising he needed more information, Ryu decided to enquire about the scroll later. Dr. Nono then performed some hand seals and summoned a dead fish.
"I will first demonstrate healing hand jutsu. Look carefully."
- [Temporary Enhance] running [Improved Eyesight] and [Peripheral Awareness]
- [Super Observation] activated
She proceeded to heal the deaf fish, which came alive in half a minute.
Ryu said, "Dead fish came alive."
Dr. Nono replied, "No, the fish is still dead and will remain dead. No medical ninjutsu can bring the dead to life. I hope you all remember that. This fish's internal system is temporarily pushed into action using [Healing Hand Jutsu]. It not only heals wounds but also reactivates nerves, and that is the reason for this activity."
"You all must know about chakra natures." Nono then asked.
Everyone nodded, and Dr. Nono continued, "Even if someone is not using chakra-nature manipulation, their chakra contains a bit of their chakra nature. If I take fire from nature, for example, it will burn the subject. We need pure or non-elemental chakras for healing purposes. Those found with exceptional chakra control will be trained to invoke this pure or non-elemental chakra to stimulate healing in the subject."
"Let us proceed with the test. You all need to stick a leaf on your forehead for at least two hours. Everyone get your leaf from me and start. Observers sitting in here will be recording everything. I will come back in two hours."
She came back in two hours; by then, many had failed and were let go.
Nono said, "Everyone here is welcome to the healing unit. You all will be trained in [Healing Hand Jutsu] for the next semester. All those new here must have had their electives chosen, right?"
Everyone nodded. "Good. Collect the books as per your electives, and we will continue in the next class. Ryu, you stay behind."
Everyone stood up and left, but Ryu stayed behind. Nono started talking, "How are you? Last time I met you, you were half the weight you are now."
Ryu replied, "When I was discharged and started training to become a ninja, I started gaining muscle mass."
Nono replied, "Yes, that cure worked. It really changed the medical world. Due to Dr. Yuki's efforts, much has changed. Civilians specifically are most benefitted from that medicine. The money that is coming to Dr. Yuki, she is selflessly sharing with other orphanages. Even my orphanage received so much help."
She became sad and added, "My only complaint is that this cure was not discovered sooner."
Ryu thought to himself, 'So Kabuto is already in Danzo's grasp.'
""So, what electives have you chosen?" Nono asked, trying to shift the mood. Ryu replied, "Immunology and oncology."
"Both the difficult ones. You are trying to follow Dr. Yuki's footsteps."
Ryu replied, "Yes, I am; that cure saved me. I must at least try and contribute my part and help others as I was helped."
"You remind me of my son Kabuto," Nono replied, drawing a parallel between Ryu and her own child, who is also talented in medical ninjutsu."
Ryu was not surprised to hear that name, as he already knew, but he still asked, "Your son?"
"Yeha. You remind me of him. He is 2 years older than you, and just like you, he is also talented in medical ninjutsu." Dr. Nono replied, trying to look cheerful.
"Where is he now?" Ryu asked about Kabuto.
Nono said, "He is in another kind of ninja academy and training to become a ninja just like you."
Ryu noticed the sadness in her voice and thought, 'I want to save both of them, but it will not be an easy task, as the timeline will be at stake, and also... Danzo is involved.'
"Let's try to guess what will happen," Ryu thought, preparing to activate his powers to think ahead and predict what may happen through the thought process.
