---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shisui left the Land of Water with a heavy heart. A part of him was glad to finally return to the village, having no idea what was transpiring there during his extended mission. He worried about the growing resentment between the village higher-ups and the Uchiha clan. But another part of him, the part that had found a brother in Naruto, was scared and saddened by what awaited Naruto in the civil war.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naruto snuck his way back to the caves where Jinin and Pakura were hiding. As soon as he reached back, Jinin asked, "So, what's your decision?"
Naruto replied that he would follow Jinin to the rebel camp. There was an unreadable expression on Jinin's face that vanished into a good-natured smile. Naruto continued to share what he had learned about the new bounty and Jinin's status. In the following days, as they waited for the patrols to decrease, Naruto got to know Pakura well. Beneath her stern and harsh demeanor was a gentle soul who shied away from the depravity of the shinobi world.
After a week in hiding, they slowly emerged and met with one of Jinin's acquaintances, who helped them establish contact with the rebels. They later met the rebel leader, Terumi Mei, who was initially wary of them, suspecting an elaborate ruse to lure them out. However, the offer was too good to pass up: gaining one of the most celebrated shinobi of the Mist, Jinin Akebino, the last of the original order of the legendary swordsmen of the Mist, and an S-rank shinobi, Shakuton no Pakura, who would be a powerhouse on the battlefield. It was no secret to both camps that Jinin did not support the bloodline genocide, yet he hadn't abandoned the Mist either. What convinced Terumi Mei was Pakura's presence, as Yagura would never employ a known bloodline user to 'purge them,' as he called it. That was the extent of his hatred.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Days passed monotonously in the camp, and Naruto saw firsthand what it was like to be oppressed with hardly a glimmer of hope. He understood the luxury that a walled village provided. He wasn't brought into the immediate fighting as Jinin was insistent that it wasn't time for him to enter the war. Despite Naruto arguing that he was more than capable, Jinin always said it wasn't time. For a month, Naruto was made to do menial tasks like cleaning, managing logistics, and distributing weapon loot and rations.
Naruto stood in front of Jinin, his fists clenched and frustration evident in his eyes. "I'm ready, Jinin-sensei! I've trained hard, and I can handle myself in a fight. Why won't you let me prove it?"
Jinin, calm and composed, looked at Naruto with a steady gaze. "Naruto, you're talented, no doubt about it. But there's more to war than just fighting. You need to understand the bigger picture, the strategies, and the importance of every small task."
"But cleaning and carrying supplies?" Naruto's voice rose with exasperation. "How is that going to help me get stronger?"
Jinin's expression softened slightly. "You think it's pointless, but these tasks are the backbone of our operations. Without supplies, without proper logistics, our fighters wouldn't last a day. Everyone has a role, and right now, this is yours."
Naruto's shoulders slumped, his anger giving way to a sense of helplessness. "I just... I want to make a difference. I want to help."
"And you are helping," Jinin reassured him. "By doing these tasks, you're supporting the entire camp. You're ensuring that everyone has what they need to keep fighting. It's not glorious, but it's necessary."
Naruto looked down, his mind racing with conflicting thoughts. He knew Jinin was right, but it didn't make the situation any easier to accept. "I understand, but it feels like I'm not doing enough."
Jinin placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder. "Your time will come, Naruto. For now, learn from these experiences. See how the camp operates, understand the struggles of everyone here. It will make you a better leader, a better shinobi."
Naruto nodded reluctantly, his determination not completely dimmed. "Okay, Jinin-sensei. I'll do my best."
As the days went by, Naruto threw himself into his assigned tasks, learning the intricacies of camp life. He saw the importance of every job, no matter how small, and began to appreciate the strength it took to keep the camp running.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naruto learned a lot from these tasks. He saw how, despite being hungry and famished, shinobi were only given limited portions of food. They couldn't afford to fill everyone's stomachs, and it was especially hard to decline small children asking for second servings. Discipline had to be maintained; otherwise, the whole system would collapse. Naruto saw older shinobi skipping meals to feed the children when food stores were low. The sight of grizzled warriors handing over their meager portions to wide-eyed youngsters left a deep impression on him. It was a stark reminder of the harsh reality they all faced, and the immense sacrifice that went beyond just fighting on the battlefield.
The reality of war was brutal—small things like food, ration, and weapons were just as important as ambushes and battles. Naruto observed the intricate balance required to keep the camp functioning. The importance of maintaining anonymity for the vendors who sold them food was critical; if discovered, those vendors would face severe consequences. Funding was a constant issue, with resources stretched thin. Naruto learned that the rebels had to be resourceful and creative, often resorting to bartering and scavenging to make ends meet. He saw firsthand how the lack of basic supplies could demoralize even the most seasoned fighters and how crucial it was to ensure a steady flow of necessities.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During these months, Naruto made many friends in the camp. He became a favorite among the children, despite being one himself. One of the families he grew particularly close to was the family he had saved from the ambush months ago: a mother named Hizuki Yuki and her two children. They were from the Yuki clan, which now had only 16 surviving members.
Naruto also met three Kaguya clan members, infamous for their bloodthirstiness, who were the heavy hitters of the rebels. Despite their harsh demeanor, even among Mist shinobi, they respected strength. Naruto, being a child prodigy who had beaten some of their young members, earned their begrudging respect. The Kaguyas, with their distinctive bone manipulation abilities, were formidable warriors, and their respect was not easily earned. Naruto's interactions with them were a testament to his growing prowess and adaptability in the harsh environment of the rebel camp.
Naruto became fast friends with Mangetsu Hozuki and his younger brother, Suigetsu Hozuki. Mangetsu, initially resentful and disliking Naruto, was a 22-year-old with purple eyes, shoulder-length white hair, and shark-like teeth, a trait common among the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. He wore a black, sleeveless shirt, light-purple pants, and striped leg-warmers, with a water bottle attached to a belt around his waist and bandages around his neck. Mangetsu and Suigetsu bore a great resemblance to each other.
Mangetsu had a complex history with Jinin. As a young boy, Mangetsu had sought an apprenticeship with Jinin, who had declined. Jinin was the first of the swordsmen who could use all the seven blades. Jinin taught Mangetsu to wield all the blades, making him exceptional, but never gave him the honor of being called his apprentice. Mangetsu had great respect for Jinin, to the extent where he wouldn't sit in the same room unless asked by Jinin. This respect was instilled in the new members of the Seven Swordsmen.
Until Jinin joined the rebel camp, Mangetsu was the de facto leader of the rebel Seven Swordsmen, wielding the Nuibari. The group included Chojuro with the Hiramekarei, Ameyuri Ringo with the Kiba blades, and now Jinin Akebino with the Kabutowari, making four of the Seven Swordsmen loyal to the rebel cause. Only Jinpachi Munashi, wielding Shibuki, remained a loyalist. Jinin's defection turned the balance from 3-2 to 4-1. The last two remaining swords were wielded by Zabuza and Kisame.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later, when Jinin made Naruto spar with Mangetsu, it was clear that Naruto was outmatched in kenjutsu (swordsmanship). However, Naruto didn't make it easy for Mangetsu. He made the older shinobi sweat and work for his victory, earning Mangetsu's begrudging respect. But when it came to water manipulation, Naruto even gave the feared Hozuki clan a run for their money. This prowess in water techniques won Mangetsu's admiration. What began as respect slowly turned into friendship. Despite their age gap, they became as thick as thieves, sparring together and treating each other as equals.
Mangetsu, now 22, looked at Naruto with a mix of envy and respect. His younger brother, Suigetsu, was a year younger than Naruto but displayed a maturity beyond his years. However, Naruto, despite being only 12, had the appearance of a 14 to 15-year-old and a maturity that rivaled Mangetsu's own.
Mangetsu could not contain his excitement when he heard that his long-time idol, Lord Jinin Akebino, was joining the rebel cause. He was no fool; he knew there was a possibility of this being a ruse. But Jinin, infamous across the shinobi world for his honor and ruthlessness, was respected by the Seven Swordsmen of all three generations. In the Mist, honor was often seen as a weakness, but Jinin Akebino, the "Wraith of the Mist" (霧の亡霊, Kiri no Bōrei), was known for his disdain for underhanded tactics and his formidable reputation as a ruthless shinobi.
Without hesitation, Mangetsu relinquished his post as the head of the Seven Swordsmen of the rebel camp to Lord Akebino. When the rebel war council suggested that Jinin could not be trusted, Mangetsu argued passionately, stating that it would be an insult to the order if Jinin was under his command. It wasn't just about rank; it was about the greatness of the man.
Mangetsu felt a pang of jealousy towards Naruto. How could a mere 12-year-old become the apprentice of such a legendary figure when he, the most talented swordsman of his generation, was overlooked? Driven by this jealousy, Mangetsu challenged Naruto. The boy was good—he would have been equal to Mangetsu at that age in kenjutsu. But when it came to water manipulation, Naruto was head and shoulders above even the Hozukis. The boy was a true asset in every sense, and he was also trained in the art of seals by Lord Jinin.
Jinin, one of the foremost seal specialists of the Mist, claimed that Naruto might even surpass him. Naruto had created numerous perimeter seals undetectable by the rebels, greatly improving their chances of survival. He also made various seals for trading and other uses, proving invaluable to the camp. Ray, as Naruto was now called, became one of Mangetsu's closest friends, demonstrating his worth in gold.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naruto also picked up a lot from his training. He learned the importance of scouting, sensing traps, and observing water jutsu while acting as a scout in battles. He developed a way to sense water jutsu and then break them down to their fundamental components in his mind, allowing him to replicate or incorporate various elements of the techniques to his own or understand them better. The seamless use of water manipulation by the Hozukis fascinated him, and he learned much from observing them. His first original jutsu, the Water Needle, was inspired by the Mizukage's Water Gun technique. Seeing the technique in action was awe-inspiring, and Naruto realized that mere descriptions did not do justice to the genius behind such simple jutsu.
From his conversations with Jinin, Naruto discovered that his natural sensing ability was called the "Mind's Eye of the Kagura" (神楽心眼, Kagura Shingan). Jinin explained that, from his understanding, it wasn't fully developed yet. This ability allowed Naruto to learn the mechanics of jutsu rather than just copying them. The potential of this ability in the Uzumaki clan was astounding. Lady Mito, for instance, could sense emotions and detect lies. Naruto himself could sense someone's chakra nature and elemental affinity. Some of the greatest sensors could detect seals from kilometers away and understand them mentally without even seeing them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, what truly progressed during his time in the rebel camp was his foray into mastering Storm Release. Initially, Naruto struggled to believe he had this bloodline ability since he had never seen its full manifestation during his training. His attempts to replicate Storm Release jutsu ended in failure. It was Pakura who corrected his approach, explaining the difference between simply combining two elements and truly amalgamating them. She demonstrated her Scorch Release repeatedly, testing her patience as Naruto observed and experimented countless times.
Flashback Begins
One evening, as they sat around the campfire, Naruto shared his frustrations. "I don't get it. I'm combining water and lightning, but nothing seems to work. What am I missing?"
Pakura looked at him with understanding eyes. "Combining elements isn't just about putting them together. You need to feel how they blend, how they become one. It's not just a mix—it's a true amalgamation."
Naruto started realizing this when he attempted to form a water dragon charged with lightning during a mission. His inadvertent mixing of hand seals caused the elements to fuse due to the balance of yin-yang and an additional chakra that he could reach because of his inherited bloodline.
"Think about it, Naruto," Pakura continued. "When you saw the Yuki clan using Ice Release, what did you notice?"
Naruto thought back to the countless times he observed the Yuki clan. "There was something subtle... a balance of yin and yang. And when you use your Scorch Release, I sense an additional chakra that blends with the elements and yin-yang."
"Exactly," Pakura nodded. "That's the key to mastering your Storm Release. You need to find your unique balance and promotion of elements and chakra."
Naruto decided to seek advice from the Yuki clan elders. He approached Hinara Yuki, one of the senior members, and asked for guidance.
"Elder Hinara," Naruto began respectfully, "I've been struggling to understand how to properly combine my elements for Storm Release. Could you help me?"
Hinara, a woman with kind eyes and a weathered face, looked at Naruto thoughtfully. "Child, the key lies in understanding the flow of your chakra. You must allow your elements to blend naturally, without forcing them. Meditation can help you find this balance."
He tried and tried, but failed every time. He started meditation a long while ago when Kosuke advised him, it would help him with Genjutsu and yin-related techniques.
One evening, Naruto sat by the river, meditating as the scroll advised. He let his chakra flow freely, allowing his bloodline to guide the process. Suddenly, he felt a spark—an electric plasmic pulse that resonated deep within him. The first spark of his plasmic Storm Release brought him untold joy and excitement.
"I did it!" Naruto exclaimed, his eyes shining with excitement as he showed Pakura the small storm energy cloud forming in his hand.
Pakura smiled, pride evident in her eyes. "Well done, Naruto. Now, keep refining it. This is just the beginning."
With the guidance of the Yuki clan elders, Naruto learned the basics of combining elements using hand seals, adapting their techniques for his own Storm Release. He was immensely grateful for their assistance.
On the last day before Shisui left the hideout, he shared three jutsu he had copied from a now-deceased Kumo shinobi who had a bastardized version of Storm Release, which Kumo taught to its shinobi. Many Kumo shinobi used this formidable version, similar to how the people from the Land of Snow used Snow Release instead of true Ice Release. One of the jutsu Shisui shared was Storm Release: Laser Circus. This A-rank technique created several beams of energy that shot towards the enemy.
Flashback Ends
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naruto began training on Laser Circus, while also creating lower-rank Storm Release techniques. The process was arduous, but each successful step fueled his determination.
Naruto often found himself reflecting on his journey, the weight of his heritage, and the bonds he had formed. He realized that his path was not just about survival but about making a difference, no matter how small.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the sun set on another day, Naruto sat by the fire, the flickering flames casting shadows on his face. He sensed someone approaching and instinctively knew who it was. Jinin stepped into the light, his expression serious.
"Naruto," Jinin began, "from tomorrow, you are entering the battlefield."
Naruto's heart raced with a mix of anticipation and dread. The next months were a blur of slaughter and bloodshed, each day filled with battles that became bloodier and bloodier as the days progressed.
The civil war was brutal, and Naruto quickly realized the gravity of his new reality. One of the most significant battles he participated in was the capture of a loyalist stronghold—a fortress that was key to their strategic advantage on the island. The fortress was heavily fortified, with high walls and well-armed guards. Jinin, Manjutsu, Naruto, and other strategists gathered to plan their assault.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jinin stood before a map, his eyes scanning the layout of the fortress. "We need to approach this from multiple angles," he said, pointing to various entry points. "Naruto, you and Manjutsu will lead the main assault on the front gate. I'll take a smaller team to infiltrate from the side and create a distraction."
Naruto nodded, absorbing every detail of the plan. Manjutsu, standing beside him, cracked his knuckles, ready for the fight ahead. "Let's do this," he said with a bloodthirsty grin.
As dawn broke, the rebel forces moved into position. Naruto felt the tension in the air, the anticipation of the battle to come. He exchanged a glance with Manjutsu, who gave him a reassuring nod. "Stick to the plan, and we'll make it through," Manjutsu said.
Naruto focused on the task at hand, his mind running through the strategies Jinin had taught him. He recalled Jinin's words: "Always think several steps ahead. Anticipate your enemy's moves and adapt."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The battle began with an explosive start. Naruto and Manjutsu led the charge, their combined strength tearing through the front gate's defenses. Naruto unleashed a barrage of water and lightning jutsu, cutting through the enemy ranks. Manjutsu's swordsmanship was unparalleled, each swing of his blade precise and deadly.
"Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet!" Naruto shouted, summoning a massive dragon-shaped torrent of water that crashed into the loyalist defenses, scattering their formation. Manjutsu followed up with a swift, deadly assault, his blade flashing in the morning light.
"Naruto, on your left!" Manjutsu shouted, and Naruto quickly turned, unleashing a torrent of water to knock back a group of advancing enemies. "Storm Release: Lightning Needle Barrage!" he called out, sending a flurry of lightning-infused water needles at the approaching guards, striking with pinpoint accuracy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As they fought their way through the fortress, Naruto saw Jinin's team creating chaos on the other side. Explosions rocked the walls, and smoke filled the air, adding to the confusion. Naruto and Manjutsu pressed on, their focus unwavering.
In the heat of battle, Naruto's mind raced with strategies. He used his Storm Release to create a storm of lightning-infused water needles, targeting the loyalist guards with pinpoint accuracy. Manjutsu covered him, slicing through any enemy that got too close.
"Earth Release: Mud Wall!" a loyalist shinobi cried, erecting a barrier to block their advance. Naruto countered with "Storm Release: Force Palm," a powerful water-lightning-infused strike that shattered the mud wall, allowing Manjutsu to rush in and finish off the defenders.
They fought their way to the heart of the fortress, where the loyalist leader awaited. The ensuing battle was fierce, with powerful jutsu clashing and the ground shaking from the force of their attacks. Naruto felt the strain of his chakra, but he pushed through, knowing they couldn't afford to lose.
"Manjutsu, now!" Naruto yelled, creating a massive water vortex with "Water Release: Great Waterfall Technique." Manjutsu leapt into the air, his blade glowing with chakra as he brought it down with devastating force, shattering the enemy's defenses.
With a final, coordinated attack, Naruto and Manjutsu managed to overpower the loyalist leader. The fortress was theirs.
As they explored the stronghold, they found evidence of the loyalists' plans and resources. Naruto discovered maps detailing other strategic locations and supply routes. Jinin, ever the strategist, analyzed the information with a keen eye.
"Good work, everyone," Jinin said. "This will give us the upper hand."
Naruto didn't feel a sense of accomplishment but only a deep weariness. The battle had been hard-fought, and the reality of war weighed heavily on him. But he knew that each victory brought them closer to their goal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the following weeks, Jinin continued to teach Naruto the art of strategy, he also brought other strategists who were very experienced to brainstorm ideas. They spent hours discussing battle tactics, analyzing past battles, and planning future operations. Jinin's experience and wisdom were invaluable, and Naruto absorbed every lesson like a sponge.
"Always remember, Naruto," Jinin said one evening as they sat by the fire, "a true shinobi is not just strong in battle but also wise in strategy. Use your mind as well as your strength."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two months passed in a flurry of battles. Naruto's life became a constant cycle of combat and survival. Some fights were fought in the dense mist and trees, using guerrilla tactics to ambush and outmaneuver the enemy. Other battles took place on open grounds, where reinforcement and active engagement were necessary to evacuate people from hideouts. He fought alongside most of the notable names in the rebel army, witnessing firsthand the brutal reality of war.
One of the most terrifying moments was seeing the Mizukage in battle, transforming into the three-tailed turtle and unleashing a dance of destruction. The sheer power and devastation were awe-inspiring, yet horrifying. Naruto was so immersed in the war that he often forgot he was a spy. Without Shisui there to remind him, the Leaf felt distant and almost forgotten.
As the last month of his mission approached, Naruto dreaded what would become of his bond with the people here. Could he abandon them to this fate? He knew both Pakura and Jinin were aware of his true allegiance, but they never spoke of it.
He had particularly grown close to Mei, who insisted he call her by her first name instead of Terumi-sama. Over the past month, Naruto began to notice the curves of women as his hormones kicked in, and Mei seemed to take a mischievous delight in his reactions.
She took every opportunity to tease him, bending forward to show her cleavage while pretending to adjust her boots or leaning in too close during conversations, allowing him a tantalizing view down her blouse. Her every move seemed calculated to draw his attention, from the deliberate sway of her hips as she walked away to the playful flick of her hair over her shoulder. Each time she caught him staring, she giggled, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
Sometimes, when Naruto didn't react as expected, Mei took her teasing to another level. She would slowly caress his chest, her fingers lingering just a bit too long. The light touch sent shivers down his spine, causing his breath to hitch and goosebumps to rise on his skin. "You're so tense, Naruto," she would whisper, her breath warm against his ear. "You need to learn to relax."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flashback Begins
One evening, as the camp settled down after a particularly grueling battle, Naruto found himself sitting alone by the fire, lost in thought. The flames danced before him, casting flickering shadows on his face. He sensed someone approaching and looked up to see Mei, her footsteps light and graceful. She sat down beside him, a playful smile on her lips.
"You seem deep in thought," Mei said, her voice soft and teasing.
Naruto looked up, trying to hide the blush creeping up his cheeks. "Just thinking about the mission," he replied, attempting to sound casual.
Mei leaned closer, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Is that all you're thinking about?"
Naruto gulped, his heart pounding in his chest. "Well, it's... a lot to process."
Mei chuckled, her laughter like a melodic bell. She reached out and gently traced her fingers along his chest, sending shivers down his spine. "You're so serious, Naruto. Sometimes, you need to relax a little."
Naruto's breath hitched as he felt her touch. "I... I try to."
Mei's smile widened as she leaned in even closer, her lips almost brushing his ear. "You know, you don't always have to be the strong, silent type. It's okay to be a bit naughty."
Naruto could feel the heat radiating from her body, her scent intoxicating. "I... it's just... difficult."
Mei pulled back slightly, her eyes searching his. "Why is it difficult? Are you afraid of something?"
Naruto met her gaze, his mind racing. "I'm not afraid. It's just..."
Mei's expression softened, and she cupped his cheek with her hand. "We all have responsibilities, Naruto. But that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the little moments in between."
Naruto's eyes flickered to her lips, then back to her eyes. "I guess... you're right."
Mei smiled warmly and leaned in, planting a soft kiss on his cheek. "That's a good start."
Naruto felt his heart skip a beat as her lips touched his skin. He looked at her, his eyes wide with surprise. "Mei, I..."
Mei placed a finger on his lips, silencing him. "Shh, Naruto. Just relax and enjoy the moment."
She caught him by the collar and pulled him closer to her face, whispering, "I've noticed you undressing me with your eyes. Do you really like little old me?"
Naruto stammered, "I... um..."
Then, with a saddened voice, Mei asked, "Or do you think your Mei-chan is too old?"
Naruto exclaimed, "No, you're not! You're really beautiful."
She smiled and brushed her lips against his, her hands squeezing his back and pulling him towards her. The kiss was soft but electrifying, leaving Naruto breathless.
Mei pulled back, her eyes sparkling with mischief and satisfaction. "Good answer," she murmured, her voice low and seductive.
With a tantalizing smile, Mei stood up and walked away, swaying her hips deliberately. Naruto watched her go, his mind in a daze, his body still tingling from her touch.
Flashback Ends
The fire crackled as Naruto returned to the present, his thoughts filled with the memory of Mei's teasing and the lingering warmth of her kiss.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few days later, Naruto was meeting a contact in a secret pass to hand over his report to the higher-ups. The dense mist provided some cover, but his nerves were on edge. The narrow pass was a secluded spot, flanked by tall, jagged rocks and thick vegetation. It was a perfect hiding place, or so he thought.
As Naruto approached the designated meeting point, his eyes scanned the area. His contact, a man cloaked in dark robes, stood waiting by a large boulder. Just as Naruto was about to make the exchange, he sensed a sudden shift in the air. His heightened senses picked up on the presence of multiple chakra signatures. Seven figures materialized around him, led by the unmistakable figure of Ao.
"Never thought it would be you of all people," Ao said, his voice laced with both amusement and contempt. "Is Jinin also involved in this?"
Naruto's heart raced, but he kept his composure, forcing a smirk to his lips. "Finally caught me, have you? Before you kill me, can you enlighten me on how you did it?"
Ao's smirk widened. "Only a fool reveals his cards."
Naruto's mind was working frantically. He was sensing for danger, particularly to his left where Ao had been standing. Oddly, Ao hadn't turned his head or used any noticeable chakra to sense his surroundings, which piqued Naruto's curiosity. His eyes narrowed as he focused intently on Ao's right eye. With a subtle application of his own sensing abilities, he bypassed the seal matrix. What he found shocked him—a Byakugan.
The realization hit him like a ton of bricks. The chances of escaping the sight of a Byakugan were next to zero. He gulped, his mind racing with strategies and possibilities, but knowing that any misstep could be fatal.
As Naruto scanned the area, he noticed more shadows moving in the mist—at least eight more figures hiding among the rocks and foliage. His thoughts raced. Had the informant been compromised? Was this a setup from the start?
"What's the matter, Naruto?" Ao taunted, noticing the change in Naruto's expression. "Cat got your tongue?"
Naruto felt a cold sweat trickle down his spine. His thoughts raced as he considered his options. He knew that any sudden move could trigger an attack. He needed to buy time and gather more information.
