Happy reading!
The first month in the Land of Water was a challenging adjustment for Team Agis. Naruto, Shisui, and Anko faced numerous obstacles as they settled into their new roles. Naruto couldn't help but worry about Shinku, Unagi, and Rayuma, since they had no information about their well-being.
Naruto and Shisui started doing odd jobs around the village. The Mist Village, known for its militaristic nature, restricted civilian access to the shinobi sector. Only a select few civilians who provided essential services, such as food, were allowed in. As newcomers, Naruto and Shisui had no access to these areas. The village's brutality was evident; might was right, and violence was a common occurrence. A shinobi could murder a civilian or even another shinobi without anyone batting an eye. This harsh environment was a stark contrast to what they were used to.
Despite these challenges, Naruto found himself bonding with Shisui and Anko in ways he hadn't anticipated. This bond was deeper than any he had hoped to form with anyone. Shisui, who had lost his father at the age of eleven and his mother two years later, had always considered the Uchiha clan and the village as his extended family. Working with Danzo had instilled in him the belief that his true worth lay in the shadows he protected, not in the accolades he received. However, in just one month, Naruto had given him a glimpse of what it was like to have a real family, something akin to what Itachi saw in Sasuke. Shisui now understood the profound connection that family bonds could create.
Anko, too, had become part of this makeshift family, though her bond with Shisui and Naruto was slightly different. While she enjoyed their camaraderie, the connection between Naruto and Shisui was something unique and profound. They started working as storytellers and bards, doing deliveries for a commission, and taking on various odd jobs to sustain themselves. Despite the challenging circumstances, Naruto found unexpected joy in these simple tasks. He had never imagined that he would return to a life of poverty, even for the sake of a mission. Yet, this time, he had people to share it with, making the experience enjoyable.
Naruto's bond with Shisui evolved into something he didn't know how to name. They worked together, escaped from angry customers together, and lived in a small one-bedroom apartment. They were practically joined at the hip, sharing laughter and hardships alike. The simple act of surviving and thriving in the harsh environment of the Mist Village brought them closer than Naruto had ever imagined.
One evening, as they returned from a long day of delivering goods, Naruto and Shisui found themselves sprinting through the narrow streets, trying to evade an irate customer who was unhappy with their late delivery.
"Shin, I told you we should've taken the shorter route!" Naruto panted, glancing over his shoulder at the burly man chasing them.
Shisui laughed, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Where's the fun in that, Ray? Consider it extra training!"
They ducked into an alley, pressing themselves against the walls to hide. Naruto could feel his heart pounding in his chest, but he couldn't help but grin. "You call this training? More like running for our lives!"
Shisui peeked around the corner, ensuring the coast was clear. "All clear. Let's head back before he catches on."
When they finally made it back to their apartment, both were out of breath but laughing uncontrollably. Anko was already there, lounging on the floor with a book in hand. She raised an eyebrow as they stumbled in.
"What's with you two? Late again?"
Shisui collapsed onto the couch, still chuckling. "Just another adventure, Aiko. Nothing we can't handle."
Naruto flopped down beside him, a wide smile on his face. "Yeah, just another day in the life of storytellers and bards."
Anko set her book aside and joined them, a smirk playing on her lips. "You guys are hopeless. But I have to admit, it's never boring around here."
Despite her own busy schedule, Anko always found time to unwind with them. On nights when the bar was closed, they would gather in their tiny apartment, sharing stories and dreams. One such night, they sat around a small table, eating a simple dinner Naruto had prepared.
"Anko," Naruto asked between bites, "how do you handle working at the bar? Must be tough dealing with all those drunk shinobi."
Anko shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eye. "You'd be surprised how much you can earn from a drunk ninja. They let their guard down, pay hefty tips," she said knowingly, "and spill secrets. Plus, it's kind of fun messing with them."
Shisui chuckled, shaking his head. "Only you, Aiko. Only you."
As the night wore on, they fell into comfortable silence, each lost in their thoughts. For Naruto, these moments were precious. He had never experienced such camaraderie and belonging before. The bond he shared with Shisui was deep and unspoken, a connection forged through shared experiences and mutual respect.
One morning, as they were preparing to head out for another day of work, Naruto hesitated. "Shin, do you ever miss being back in Lian Islands?"
Shisui paused, looking thoughtful. "Sometimes. But then I remember why we're here. Every day we're getting closer to completing what we need to and becoming rich. Besides, I have you and Aiko. That's more than enough for me."
Naruto nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude. "Yeah, you're right. I guess I just never expected to find a family here."
Shisui's smile was warm and genuine. "Family isn't always about blood, Ray. And you're my blood now," he said, chastisingly. Seeing Naruto's apologetic look for the slip-up, Shisui continued more gently, "It's about the people who stand by you, who share your burdens and joys. You, Aiko, and I—we're family."
Anko, overhearing their conversation, joined them with a smirk. "Well said, Shin. Now, enough of this sappy talk. We've got a job to do."
Naruto found himself looking forward to each new day. The bond he shared with Shisui and Anko was a source of comfort and strength. Their little apartment, though cramped and modest, felt more like home than any place Naruto had known. The simple act of sharing meals, laughing at silly jokes, and navigating the challenges of their mission together solidified their connection.
One rainy afternoon, after a particularly grueling day, they sat around the small table, drying off and sipping hot tea. Shisui looked at Naruto, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Ray, remember when we had to convince that merchant we were legitimate traders? You handled that brilliantly."
Naruto grinned, recalling the incident. "Thanks, Shin. I just thought about what you would say and went with it."
Shisui chuckled. "Well, you did a great job. We make a good team."
Anko chimed in, "You both did well. And let's not forget the time we had to deal with that group of rowdy shinobi at the bar. Shin, you handled them like a pro."
Shisui shrugged modestly. "Just doing my job. But I couldn't have done it without you two backing me up."
The three of them sat in companionable silence for a while, the rain pattering against the window. In those quiet moments, Naruto felt a profound sense of belonging. He had found a family in Shisui and Anko, a bond forged in the fires of hardship and shared purpose.
By the second month, it was a great relief when Shinku and Unagi came to visit as part of a merchant caravan. Shisui and Naruto went to purchase some goods, using the opportunity to talk critically about their well-being and mission progress.
As they browsed the wares, Shinku leaned in, speaking in a hushed tone, "The harvest has been bountiful this season, hasn't it? The fields are thriving."
Naruto nodded, catching the hidden meaning. "Yes, the fields are thriving, but there are whispers of droughts elsewhere. Have you heard anything about that?"
Unagi chimed in, her voice low but steady, "Indeed. Some villages are struggling. It seems there's a plague affecting the crops in those areas."
Shisui's eyes narrowed slightly, the seriousness of their conversation hidden behind a casual demeanor. "A plague, you say? I wonder if it's natural or... otherwise."
Their coded conversation continued as they finalized their purchases. Hidden among the grains Shinku handed over was a small scroll, which Shisui discreetly pocketed. In a second, Shisui's Sharingan flared so briefly that even Naruto, who was specifically watching for it, barely noticed. He knew what had happened—Shisui had just placed Shinku in a genjutsu, giving him further instructions.
Later that night, Shisui and Naruto gathered in a small underground room beneath their apartment. Shisui carefully unrolled the scroll, reading its contents under the flickering light of a single candle.
The scroll corroborated much of the information they had gathered and added some critical new details. Naruto, reading over Shisui's shoulder, felt a chill run down his spine. "The Mist has gone crazy. What possessed them to kill all their bloodline users? Has the Mizukage gone mad?"
Shisui's expression was grave. "Initially, when we saw the hatred towards bloodline users, we thought it was jealousy. Then we noticed the subtle propaganda and brainwashing of the populace. It didn't make sense at first."
Naruto nodded, his brow furrowed in thought. "When Anko mentioned an all-out bloodline purge, we couldn't believe it. We thought it was misinformation to throw off spies. But then we started seeing the confirmed murders of people with bloodlines. Now, with this information corroborated by the other half of our team, it's undeniable."
Anko, who had joined them, added, "What's even more shocking is the extermination of the Kaguya clan by the Mizukage's forces. They attempted a coup because they were being marginalized, and this was used as a rallying cry to kill the rest of the clan."
Shisui's face took on a peculiar look as he pondered the implications. "The Kaguya clan was one of the most powerful clans in Kiri. If they were exterminated, it means the Mizukage's grip on power is both ruthless and precarious."
Naruto's eyes widened in realization. "This isn't just about power; it's about fear. The Mizukage is terrified of losing control, and he's willing to do anything to maintain it."
Shisui nodded, his expression serious. "We need to be extremely careful. This place is more dangerous than we thought. Our priority now is to send this information to Konoha. In two days, one of Lord Jiraiya's agents will take the scroll we prepare and deliver it to the Hokage. The agent doesn't know who we are, nor does the scroll contain our identities. This will help ensure our safety while getting the critical intel back to the village."
Three more weeks passed since they sent the scroll back to Konoha. One evening, Naruto asked Shisui why he didn't use the summoning jutsu to send back the information. Shisui replied, "The use of chakra, especially for something as complex as a summoning, would be detected. We can't risk it, especially here in the Mist."
During these three weeks, Naruto started accompanying Anko to the bar and doing odd jobs there since Shisui was occupied with more dangerous reconnaissance and scouting missions. These weeks were transformative for Naruto; the strict and brooding side of him began to fade. He and Anko got into all sorts of fun. The rigid Naruto from two months ago was now more relaxed and vibrant.
One night, they even went to a casino. Anko watched in awe as Naruto seemed to have the devil's luck, winning hand after hand. "You've got the luck of the devil," she teased. However, Shisui put an end to their gambling escapades that same night. "We need to keep a low profile," he reminded them sternly.
Despite the relaxed atmosphere, they maintained a strict routine. Every day, they dedicated an hour to physical exercise to stay in shape in one form or another, incorporating it into their day-to-day work. Whether it was morning calisthenics or running errands through the bustling streets, they made sure to keep themselves fit and alert.
Finally, after three weeks, new orders came. Shisui gathered them in their small apartment, his expression serious. "The higher-ups have ordered Naruto to join the academy," he announced.
Anko looked concerned. "The academy? Why? That's a huge risk."
Naruto also looked a bit unsettled. "And you, Anko, you're to go back to the village."
Anko was shocked. "Why? What's going on?"
Shisui explained, "There's been a development. They've found one of Orochimaru's old labs, and they need you there. Also, on your way back, you're to call back the rest of the team to village for a debriefing."
Before Anko could explode in protest, Shisui added, "Me and Naruto are staying here. Even though the mission was initially for a year, we've uncovered the cause of the turmoil in three months. Naruto and I will dig a bit deeper."
Anko's eyes widened with concern. "But why send Naruto to the academy? Why the entire team? That's a direct risk!"
Shisui sighed, running a hand through his darkened hair. "It's important for Naruto to blend in and gather information from within. The academy is a hub of information. Plus, there have been increased sightings of shinobi in the capital, and our cover might be at risk. There's also the civil war and the rumor of the Mizukage attacking the capital. We can't be implicated in this issue whatsoever."
Naruto, seeing Anko's distress, tried to reassure her. "Don't worry, we'll be fine. We've got each other's backs."
Anko's face softened, but worry still lingered in her eyes. "Just... be careful, both of you." She then leaned down and gave Naruto a quick kiss on the cheek, causing him to blush furiously. Anko grinned, enjoying his reaction. "You're too cute, Ray."
Shisui nodded. "We will. Now, let's make sure everything is in place before you leave. We don't want to attract any unwanted attention."
The night passed with a mix of preparation and quiet reflection. The bonds they had formed in these months made their parting bittersweet, but they all knew the importance of their mission. As they packed up Anko's belongings, they shared stories and laughter, trying to keep the mood light.
Anko looked around the small apartment, a hint of sadness in her eyes. "I'll miss this place. It's been our home, weirdly enough."
Shisui smiled softly. "It has. But we have to stay focused on the mission. Once we're done, we can look back on this time fondly."
Naruto nodded, trying to keep his spirits high. "Yeah, and who knows? Maybe we'll have another adventure like this in the future."
Anko chuckled, ruffling Naruto's hair. "You're incorrigible. Just stay safe, both of you."
As the dawn approached, Anko prepared to leave. Shisui handed her a small, sealed scroll. "This contains all the information we've gathered so far. Make sure it gets to the Hokage."
Anko took the scroll, her expression determined. "I will. And you two, don't do anything reckless."
Shisui and Naruto watched as Anko disappeared into the early morning mist, heading towards the capital with a few traveling merchants in a ship. From there, she would travel to Hi no Kuni along with the rest of the team. The weight of their mission pressed heavily on their shoulders. The coming days would be challenging, but they were ready to face whatever lay ahead, driven by the bonds they had forged and the trust they had in each other.
Shisui turned to Naruto, a serious expression on his face. "Alright, Ray, let's get you ready for the academy."
Naruto nodded, determination in his eyes. "I'm ready, Shin. Let's do this."
