Chapter 37: 37. Path
"Why is he taking this long?" Yumi said for the nth time.
"Well, he did say he was supposed to be busy today, so he probably had to make some shadow clones or some other clones to delegate the tasks and remove the tasks that are not important," Miyuki also said this for the nth time.
They were like a broken record; whenever Yumi said this statement, Miyuki said this.
Itachi wondered if he was stuck in a time loop or something seeing how many times they had repeated their words.
He would have even believed that if the stones he was throwing hadn't changed their position.
They were currently by a riverside, with Itachi throwing stones, skipping them on the river.
Miyuki was sitting on a stone and Yumi was in the water, floating in it.
She likes the water and coolness, so she won't mind being there.
After a near life and death experience.
"Are you really not worried that somebody would come from beneath the water and attack you?" Itachi asked this.
He wanted to see if she could say anything other than the previous lines she said every few minutes.
To Itachi's surprise, she did answer him.
"Nah, I can tell when somebody would attack me by feeling the water's vibrations," Yumi confidently said.
She had been taught by Yukio about this exercise a while ago, to sense things properly in water, as a big water body like a lake, river, or even sea would be her strongest domain.
"I see," Itachi hummed and continued with his stone skipping.
If she was that confident, then what could he say other than just be alert in case such thing happened.
The first rule of being a ninja was being paranoid.
Plus, he could also see with his Sharingan that despite saying all that, Yumi was paranoid and had both her palms near her, ready in position to directly weave one or two seals and escape if such a thing really happened.
Truly a person taught by Yukio.
"Sensei, who was that guy?" Itachi asked Miyuki as she hadn't said anything other than an old friend.
Maybe he was an ex-ninja of Konoha who had gone rogue, but why isn't he hunted? The guy was definitely dangerous with his ability to appear anywhere.
Itachi wasn't able to see Tobi's mangekyo due to the latter intentionally positioning himself throughout the battle.
Even Yumi didn't see this.
They haven't even noticed that fact until now.
They have a long way to go before they become proper ninjas.
"As I said, he was an old friend, the one who took the wrong path and is stubborn to leave it," Miyuki said while looking at the sky.
It would have been a better view if it was currently night, but it was almost evening, so the orange hue was also good.
"Hmm, so do you want to bring him to the right path?" Itachi continued.
"Hmm, maybe. It is his choice after all. I could show him a better path; it's his call to choose it or not," Miyuki said while stretching her hands.
"Why not bring him to that path?" Itachi tilted his head.
If you cared about a person, like your friend, then isn't it better to bring them to a path that is better for them than their current one?
"Well, he is an adult and has the freedom to choose his own choices. It's his decision in the end. Maybe I might be wrong to think that his path is not the best one," Miyuki shrugged.
"Then, is it bad to forcefully change one person's path?" Itachi was deeply thinking at the moment.
He thinks he is onto something.
Yumi, who had heard the conversation since the beginning, was confused; she didn't even know what a person's path meant.
'Are they still talking about future decisions or is it something else?' Yumi was not even sure if they were talking about this topic, or if it was something else from the beginning.
"Hmm, Yes and No," Miyuki chuckled.
"So, it depends on the situation. How do we decide that then?"
"Well, it would all boil down to the result, and hope that this path would get them the result they wanted and you wanted; if not..." Miyuki shook her head.
"They will resent you for the rest of their lives," Itachi completed it for her.
"Maybe they will, maybe not. A person can't hate something for this long, can they?" Miyuki asked Itachi with a grin.
"Why not? If they can love a person for this long, then why not hate them for that long?" This conversation was going beyond the understanding of Yumi.
Or it was becoming more abstract to Yumi who doesn't even know how exactly human interactions and emotions work.
So, she stopped listening and looked at the sky.
She was floating on the water with a kind of advanced application of water walking exercise.
Her back was in the water, some part was, some wasn't, such that she was half submerged, and half not.
It was relaxing at least.
Yumi's eyes widened as she felt a hand pull her into the water.
She quickly joined her hands and weaved hand seals for a jutsu which would make ice come out from her body, such that the person's hands would get hurt.
But, to her horror, she realized that she couldn't control her chakra.
It was sealed by a seal probably.
Itachi had started moving already when seeing that and threw a shuriken at the spot where he thought the attacker should be.
He still hasn't trained properly to do Uchiha-like shuriken manoeuvres when throwing shuriken in water.
It seems after this mission, he would definitely learn this as it was very inefficient otherwise.
The shuriken missed and Yumi disappeared.
"Sensei, what now?" Itachi said but paused and looked back.
Miyuki was nowhere to be seen.
'Did somebody attack her, or did the masked man attack again? No, sensei was on her full guard, so it should be something else,' Itachi's brain was running very fast.
'Why did they capture Yumi, instead of not killing her directly... they are after their kekkei genkai,' Itachi's face turned grim.
That was the worst scenario in his mind.
'But, where did sensei go? I should have heard the water splashing or something if she went into the water, or did she do that silently? But that person should probably know that sensei is an Elite jounin or High-level Jounin, so they should at least be jounin level or have good escaping abilities.'
Itachi jumped out of the water, in case he was attacked too.
He decided to wait here as he couldn't do anything other than that.
"Sensei, come out, I know it's just a test. That person should have been Yukio, right?" Itachi said after a few seconds.
That was the only conclusion he came up with as Miyuki could have just electrified the water; she had the capability to do that without hurting Yumi.
He had picked up on this fact from one of the conversations between his mother and Miyuki.
Also, even if Miyuki wasn't a good sensor compared to Yukio, she was considered a decent sensor in Konoha.
Plus, she was on full guard, so he concluded that.
"See, I told you that he would reach this conclusion in less than 15 seconds. I won the bet," Yukio's voice could be heard.
"Tch, I shouldn't have made that bet with you in the first place," Miyuki rarely wins in a bet with Yukio.
Yet, she likes to gamble anyway; it was just so much fun.
Plus, the winning condition was really tempting to not do it.
"I need compensation for the emotional damage I was caused," Yumi deadpanned.
She didn't like it one bit that she was used in a test for other people without knowing.
And that person was Itachi of all people. She didn't like it one bit.
"Well, you were supposed to not be in water in the first place. What if it was one of the seven ninja swordsmen of the mist? I definitely think that you wouldn't be able to feel their presence like mine," Yukio retorted.
"But why would a seven ninja swordsman even attack me, here of all places, even sneak attack? What is the probability of that?" Yumi was ready to fight this losing battle.
"Well, you have to expect the unexpected. I don't think Miyuki would have saved you if that person decided to kill you."
"Well, he shouldn't be that dumb to attack me when we have an Elite Jounin specializing in lightning with us."
"What if they are dumb? Or would have used you as hostage? Then what?" Yukio was having none of that.
"How can a dumb person become an Elite Jounin? They would die before they became one."
"That's what you think. Heck, most of the people in high powers are dumb," Yukio said from his observations.
"Hmm, wait what?" Yumi did a double take.
"Well, why do you think wars happen? That's because we are having dumb people as superiors," Yukio's words left everyone speechless.
He technically was not wrong but wasn't right either.
After so much training on her paranoia, she does this.
"But," Yumi didn't have anything to say to retort.
"Tch, after all this training, can't even be paranoid," Yukio shook his head.
He now understood how Asian parents look at their children.
