Chapter 27: 27. Thin Ice
(Powerstones please, we are 40/100, if you guys can get some within 24 hours, you will have a double release tomorrow)
Yukio woke up and looked around. He was still in the same room as the last time he woke up.
"Was that a dream or not?" Yukio asked aloud, his breathing rough.
He was feeling strong emotions for the first time in a long time.
This was similar to when his memories of his reincarnation returned to him.
He tried to calm himself down.
He couldn't trust the seals in his room to filter the sound.
'Say everything in your mind, don't say it out loud.'
He couldn't pinpoint what type of emotions he was feeling. Most of them were opposite in nature, yet he was feeling them.
Happiness, sadness, disbelief, amusement, and so on.
'I'll have to first confirm if it's true or not.'
Yukio went through every interaction he had with Miyuki.
He was comparing them with the interactions of her supposed previous life.
"Fuck, it should have been obvious. How did I miss that?" Yukio, who had been sitting straight on the bed, let his upper body fall back onto the bed.
Now, his face was looking at the ceiling.
"What should have been obvious?"
The sudden voice made Yukio alert to the maximum.
He riled his chakra, making it flow to his hands.
He also let the chakra flow in front of his heart and head so that if the enemy aimed at them, he might survive.
Some people were arrogant enough not to sneak attack until now, so Yukio still bet on the small chance he would survive if that happened.
It was the only option he had.
This all happened in an instant. Since Yukio heard the first sound, he was already ready before the person completed their first words.
"Chill, it's me. Hehe, didn't expect you of all people to not be self-aware," Yukio looked at Miyuki.
"Jeez, what do you expect of me? This is one of the safest places where I can let my guard down a bit. Didn't expect you to barge in," Yukio deadpanned.
He hadn't been focused on his surroundings due to the 'experience' or dream he had.
He still wasn't sure what exactly had happened.
So, if somebody wanted to assassinate Yukio of all people, it would have been the perfect chance to do so.
Even the day he got his memories back, he was still fine. But at that moment, he had just woken up, and his mind was focused on what he had just witnessed.
So, this was the best chance to assassinate him in his entire shinobi career so far.
Unfortunately, no one was present to take advantage of this opportunity.
It's hard to enter the house of a normal seal master in the first place.
And Yukio was anything but normal.
The guy could react to a Jounin attacking him from point-blank range while sleeping.
Danzo had already tried doing that before, and he had lost a seal master with Jounin-level capabilities because of it.
If Danzo knew today was the chance to put an end to Yukio for good, his blood pressure might have reached unimaginable levels.
Luckily, he didn't know that.
Ignorance is bliss.
Just as knowing too much puts people in danger, the same applies here.
"Well, I came to talk to Yumi a bit, but I sensed a space-time fluctuation here, so I came to check on you. What were you up to?" Miyuki narrowed her eyes at Yukio.
Learning Hiraishin isn't that dangerous, but experimenting with it recklessly is since we're dealing with space-time here.
Yukio isn't the type to be reckless. In fact, he's very cautious and paranoid.
But sometimes, Yukio does something reckless by convincing himself that it will benefit him in the long run.
Miyuki really didn't want to see him die because of that.
"Oh, I was just trying to use Hiraishin alone. I actually fell asleep while trying it. I finally managed to perform it, but it disoriented me a bit, I guess, as I was concentrating for hours without sleeping properly for the past few days." Yukio rubbed his head sheepishly.
He appeared to be telling the truth, while internally thinking, 'So, that wasn't a dream. I actually met future Miyuki.'
"Then why did you say it was a dream or not?" Miyuki wasn't buying his words.
She knew exactly how much of a liar her friend was.
This guy could lie as naturally as breathing.
Heck, sometimes he could even gaslight himself to fool other people.
Like the roaming-in-underwear incident.
Miyuki was still suspicious if he had actually fooled himself or if it was just an accident.
She couldn't tell, and neither could anyone else.
"Well, just as I told you, I was focused on the space itself for hours, so I was in a kind of flow state? I don't know the exact word, but it felt kind of dreamy, so I didn't know if it had happened until you mentioned the space-time fluctuation."
The best kinds of lies are the ones mixed with truths.
"What about your last line about it being obvious?" Miyuki hadn't dropped the topic.
She was still suspicious of Yukio. Something told her he was lying, but she couldn't pinpoint it, as what he said made sense.
"I was just lamenting that it would be hard since, first, I can't confirm if I actually used Hiraishin, and second, even if I did, it took too many hours of intense focus to do it. So, I was just lamenting about my affinity to space-time," Yukio bullshitted as he went on.
Miyuki nodded. "I guess that makes sense. Still, I feel like I'm missing something. Never mind."
"Haha, you think too much. If I wanted to lie to you, how would you be able to tell?" Yukio chuckled.
"Yeah, you're just that good of a liar. I can't tell when you're lying," Miyuki deadpanned.
Her hand twitched and moved toward the handle of her sword.
"Chill, not here! I have too many photo frames here!" Yukio flailed his arms in panic.
This room was very important to him, as it held everything materialistic that he held dear.
Well, it would be a loss if this room got destroyed.
But it was nothing he couldn't recover from.
It would just take some time to recreate all the frames of the pictures in this room.
So, he'd rather not experience that.
"I was just joking. Do you think I would actually do that? Do you think I'm short-tempered or something?" Miyuki chuckled.
She moved her hand away from the handle of the sword.
It was unknown to Yukio whether she was actually joking or not.
"Yeah," so he thought it best to go with the truth.
Miyuki's hand returned to the hilt.
A tick mark appeared on her forehead.
"You!"
"I'm just kidding! You can't even take a joke," Yukio quickly grabbed her sword hilt to stop her from drawing it.
"Hmph," Miyuki let go of the hilt and looked away.
Yukio sweatdropped.
Why is Miyuki sometimes so tough to deal with?
She has too many mood swings, in his opinion.
"What were we talking about?" Yukio stretched a bit, returning to the thought of Miyuki's previous life.
'Okay, I'll assume she is her until explicitly proven otherwise by some other evidence. But how can I know if she's regained memories of her previous life?' Yukio wondered internally.
"Nothing important, let's have breakfast. Cook something for me," Miyuki said as she headed towards the door.
"Right, what do you want to eat?" Yukio rolled his eyes.
He couldn't imagine a future where Miyuki could cook anything other than ramen properly.
*Now that I think about it, even in the future, she was only cooking ramen. How did I not notice that? She probably can't cook anything else decently,* Yukio chuckled internally at the thought of expecting Miyuki to cook something edible.
"What about ramen? It's been a while since I had the ramen you make," Miyuki said as she opened the door. She paused briefly, then narrowed her eyes at Yukio.
"Why do I feel like you're internally making fun of me?"
"What? Your instincts are going haywire like a broken record today—so many false alarms." Yukio cursed his luck internally.
"Really? I wonder about that," Miyuki smirked and closed the door, leaning against the wooden surface.
Her *'Yukio is not innocent'* instincts were finally kicking in.
She could tell that Yukio was lying.
"Let me guess what you were thinking. We were talking about food... ramen, specifically," Miyuki began voicing her thoughts.
Yukio grew alarmed, worried she might actually figure it out.
"Actually, I wanted to talk about where we left off yesterday," he quickly blurted out.
Yukio's eyes widened as soon as he said it.
Miyuki raised an eyebrow. "Reincarnation? What about it?"
