Chapter 4: Vacation

.

A whole night and day have passed since Katashiki's offensive. Sakura spent all this time working to heal the injured. She was so determined to save her friends' vacation break that she gave all she had to completely heal even Hinata's arms. The only remaining person to heal is Sasuke, who's now laying on a bed in an unknown place. When he wakes up, for the first time since his latest fight, he slowly bends over to sit. "Finally awake!" he hears Sakura say, who's sitting on the bed next to him, looking very tired.

"How long have I been there?" asks Sasuke with a confused voice.

"For a bit more than a day." answers Sakura. "How are you feeling?"

"… Not so bad." he simply says, before they both go quiet.

As they're just both sitting there, calmly looking each other in the eyes, Naruto gets in the room.

"Oh, You woke up!" he says, full of life and joy.

"Naruto,…" Sakura says. "… shouldn't you be out there with Hinata and the others?"

"I am. I just came by fast to check on him, and to ask some things."

"Don't worry, I'm taking care of him, I just need some time to recover myself." adds Sakura.

"What is it?" asks Sasuke. "You want to ask about this guy, is it?"

"… Yeah…" answers Naruto. "Who was he, what were this Bijus and all?"

"You must have noticed their chakra was really different from the beasts you know." says Sasuke, ready to explain. "I think them looking like tailed-beasts is just Katashiki trying to trick us into thinking they are related to them."

"Katashiki? So that's the guy's name!" notes Naruto.

"And he's real bad news." adds Sasuke. "I met him in person 2 or 3 days ago. He seems to be linked in some way to Kaguya. He has his own pair of rinnegan with its own abilities, a chakra reserve maybe on pair with yours and Kyubi together and a chakra control far better than mine. The things we fought, I think they are souls that he harvested from living people and put into artificial bodies. He can see through their eyes and control all their movements at once… He's after Minamoto Tsubai, to turn him into another of his pawns. He seems to know something about him that we don't know. Even Tsubai himself doesn't know anything about it."

"Okay that's it, you summed it up." says Naruto, satisfied. "It's a lot of information to take at once but I'll go with it… Oh, the other day, I used Sage Mode to find his location. He's on an island in the middle of the western ocean, very far away from there."

"I'll go there as soon as I can." suggests Sasuke. "One last thing, Naruto. What happened to all the power you had during the war?"

"Oh, you mean Rikudo Senjutsu? I've used up all of the old man's and the other tailed beasts' chakra back then. So I can't use them anymore. But don't worry, It doesn't mean I'm weaker. I got stronger besides this. It isn't really a problem to me."

"It is to me." promptly says Sasuke. "If you still were able to levitate, I wouldn't have needed Susanoo. You could have kept the two-tailed thing busy enough to prevent it from fleeing or even beat it right there… Seriously, if you and me were to fight anytime soon, you would definitely die in your current state."

"Don't say that!" says Sakura to Sasuke. "Naruto still saved the world from an extremely dangerous person just 2 weeks ago with nothing more than now."

"And then? Just means if I had been around, this guy wouldn't even have been a threat. Naruto, being strong and fast doesn't make you powerful. Abilities, alternatives, ways to win, is what saves the world."

"You're right." says Naruto. "I don't feel weak, but if you still have your left eye, there's no reason for me to not recover my new sage mode. I'll do my best to get it back on my own without the other Biju or the old man's help. This time, you had to waste all your chakra and Hinata got injured. Next time, I won't let anything happen to anyone, believe it!"

"… You'd better stay true to your ninja way then." quietly says Sasuke.

"How much time until he can get out of here?" Naruto asks to Sakura.

"Umh… Until we both completely recover I'd say 2 or 3 days."

"Ok, good luck see ya!"

Naruto leaves. As soon he closes the door, Sakura lets go and stops hiding her tireness. She falls down on Sasuke in the bed. Sasuke looks at her, and notices her Byakugo seal is missing.

"What happened to you?" he asks.

"Oh nothing! I just gave it all to fix Hinata's broken arms. At least she's fine now."

"You're really capable of fixing a limb shattered to the bone?"

"Yes… After the war, Lady Tsunade and I spent a lot of time working on different uses for the Byakugo seal. What I did is regenerate Hinata's body with the seal's chakra the same way I'd do on my body."

"Quite impressive! But did it really cost all the chakra you saved up for the last 2 years?"

"What? No! 2 weeks ago, Naruto got caught in one of Otsutsuki Toneri's jutsu and lost all of his chakra at once. I had to give all I had to him."

"I see… What would he do without you around honestly?" thinks Sasuke aloud.

"… At this rate, Sasuke, you'll probably have to recover on your own." quietly says Sakura, resting her head on his lap.

Looking at her lying there, Sasuke thinks about everything they've lived through for the last 10 years: Them being put on the same team, the forest of Death, his desertion, the Kage summit, and finally the war ending with his last fight with Naruto.

"Sakura… I'm sorry…" he says quietly.

"What for?" asks Sakura who obviously knows what he's speaking about.

"… No, nothing."

"… You already apologized, didn't you? Idiot…" she says, before expressing her feeling about Sasuke's life, after two years to think of it. "Naruto's right, nobody ever does something wrong without a real motive. If I went through the same things as you, I would probably have done the same."

"It still wasn't a reason for me to make you go through all this too. In the village, everyone at some point must have admitted that I had to be killed, that I went too far in darkness to ever come back, but neither you or Naruto gave up on me, not until you saved me."

"I didn't have to go through this with Naruto, I chose to." answers Sakura. "It's not your fault, it's mine. You shouldn't be sorry, but grateful. If it wasn't for me, Lady Tsunade would have wanted you dead as soon as you left the village. I should be grateful too. In the end, it was your choice to come back. You could have killed Naruto in the valley of the end before Kakashi and I arrived. But you chose to admit your defeat. So I'm thankful to you."

"… Still, if I'm not in a jail right now, it's only thanks to you again. People in Konoha, and anywhere else, would prefer me in a cage or dead, and I perfectly understand. I don't deserve their forgiveness yet. I don't deserve to be in Konoha. This travel, I'm just seeking forgiveness but have no idea where to find it."

"I know where. Just do as you're doing now. You're helping this guy, Minamoto Tsubai. Judging by who's after him, nobody else than you could do it. People like Katashiki or Toneri, we don't know how many of them are threatening lives around the world. A lot of people will need your help, and you'll have to give your best to do so. If forgiveness is what you need to, maybe one day, earn to live a normal life, then I'll be home, waiting for you as long as I'll have to."

Sasuke doesn't say anything. He just looks right in her eyes and starts to smile. He reaches out to her hand and invites her to come closer.

.

Naruto who left the room just five minutes ago goes back to the hostel's restaurant to meet with his friends.

"So how's she doing?" asks Shikamaru.

"We should just let them alone." he answers. "They're finally getting some time together after all these years."

"And about the monsters? Did Sasuke say anything?"

"Ah yes! All you got to know is next time I see one of those, I'll beat it up so fast you won't even get to see what kind of animal or thing it was."

"Hey, noodle-boy!" says Tsubai. "You seem to forget the damn enemy isn't the monsters, but the summoner."

"Hey you, could you stop calling me noodle-something, and just call me by my name."

"No problem, noodle-head." he answers with a blank face.

"Sigh, you're not afraid of getting your ass beaten as I see." says Shikamaru.

"Oh, actually, I am. It's just that this guy looks like a nice person who would never do something such as beating me up for giving him an annoying nickname. That's why I keep doing it. On the contrary, I won't give any nickname to Sasuke because he would definitely send me to the damn hospital if I annoy him too much."

"Fair enough I guess." answers Shikamaru. "In this case, could you not give any name to Choji, especially not anything related to fat. He doesn't take these kind of things well."

"No problem… I'll just call him by his name"

"Also..." adds Shikamaru "… could we know why you're calling Naruto this way? I don't remember him mention his love for ramen."

"Noodle-guy? Isn't it obvious?" says Tsubai. "To me, a narutomaki is just this small decoration you put in a ramen bowl."

"Seriously?" yells Naruto in a loud surprised voice. "You'll never believe it's actually how I was named. My parents took the name from my master's book. And he thought of this name while eating ramen."

"A book with a hero called Naruto?" wonders Tsubai. "Is your master Jiraya, the toad sage?"

"Yes it's him! How do you know about him."

"Himari, who's sitting right there, got me this old book as a gift a few years ago. It wasn't that interesting but at least I got to learn about the author and discovered his other kind of books,… who are way more entertaining in my opinion." he answers with a smug face.

"So you're called like the hero of the Tales of a Gutsy Ninja and were even trained by the author?" says Himari. "That's great! And you also have a lot in common with this hero. You also believe in a peaceful future for our nations and work to make it happen."

"Oh, If only you could know how much this book, and its story actually mean to me…" says Naruto. "The story, the philosophy, the meaning of this book, is what Pervy Sage wanted to pass on to the next generations, to all his students. He entrusted us with the future, through this book. And my motivation during the war, and before that, in Konoha, were essentially fueled by this energy."

"I could totally stay sitting my ass here and listen to you explain all of this for ages." says Himari, looking at Naruto with sparkly eyes. "Maybe you should try to write books too."

"Me? No way. I'd probably be better at writing Icha Icha novels than actual tales of war and peace. I didn't travel much in my life so I don't have much inspiration. Maybe Sasuke should try it."

"Right! Sasuke then." she says, confidently. "We gotta make this happen!"

"This girl has so much positive energy! I love it."

"Did the one and only Naruto Uzumaki just give me a compliment? Can't believe it. Thank you. But my positive attitude must just be easier to feel with these two in the room." she says while looking at Tsubai and Shikamaru, both with blank faces.

"Are you talking about positive energy?" says Choji who comes at the table with his arms full of plates. "Because I'm here to bring some more to this table… This is not for you." he says to Naruto as he was trying to take one of the plates.

"… This wasn't really positive energy of you, ya know."

"Ok, you can have one then." answers Choji handing a plate to Naruto. "Where's Hinata?"

"She's in our room, taking a nap. She's still having some trouble moving her fixed arms. I've checked on her just before checking on Sasuke."

"Could we be serious for a moment?" asks Shikamaru. "I know we're on a break, but we happen to have something serious to deal with. The enemy is quite mysterious, but so are you, Minamoto Tsubai. Sakura told me about some black chakra you used to beat the bear. What do you know about it?"

"Do we really have to talk about this now?" says Himari. "We were having a good time there, I'd like it to stay this way."

"No problem big brain guy." Tsubai says. "I don't know a lot about it, but I can still give you the few I have, so there I go. It seems like something called a Tengu is living in my body. It's some kind of spirit that awakened recently in me and grants me access to many jutsus it made me use unconsciously until now. Among these jutsus there is Kioku Kyuin (Memory Absorption) that allows me to absorb memories out of someone's mind and make them my own. There's also the Meiton (Darkness Release) that I used to absorb these red beast."

"… Okay" says Shikamaru. "What else can this Meiton do? What is it exactly?"

"I don't really know… Meiton is actually the manipulation of black chakra that can go against the laws of this universe, including those of physics and spirits. This way, It can completely stop things from evolving in space, just like I did with the mud that was swallowing the village. But it can also stop souls from thinking, and create dark matter. Just like any other chakra nature or Kekkei Genkai, a complete control of it also makes it useful for other things like Space-Time Ninjutsu and Fuinjutsu. Due to its specific nature, it is apparently impossible for a human to be born with this chakra nature as a Kekkei Genkai. It is considered to be a power belonging to the gods but my stupid ass won't be able to use it at full capacity. This Meiton is actually the source of all the other abilities of my Tengu, including one in particular, the most powerful I have, that makes the best possible use of both the tengu's chakra and the darkness release…"

Everyone at the table just stopped doing what they were doing to look awkwardly at Tsubai and listen.

"… Yeah, I just spoke what sounds like complete non-sense to my own self as if some damn voice in my head was dictating to me… Oh damn, A voice is dictating to me, he says with a confused look on his face…"

Tsubai completely stops talking, and gets lost in his thoughts, or mind. Before anyone else says anything about it, the hostel's receptionist, Natsuri Yokawa, comes to their table.

"Hi Mister Tsubai!" she says in a happy voice. "It's been a while, I wasn't expecting to see you anytime soon. How did your travel go?…"

"Uh, we came back for complicated reasons but we're fine miss Yokawa." answers Himari as Tsubai seems to be stuck there unable to speak or move.

"Ok… I can see you became friends with the Konoha-nin that are on vacation here. That's a good thing, as you're technically the village's leader as long as your family's not here." she says still talking to Tsubai.

Naruto looks at the receptionist. Average size and brown hairs. She's not a tall black haired woman so she can't be Tsubai's girlfriend. She's probably just a girl from the village that knows him for professional reasons but still acts as a friend because they're around the same age. He then turns to Tsubai and thinks about everything he just said, before Natsuri came in.

"So he has something that lives rent-free in his body" says Kurama. "Except for him the thing never was outside. A creature with a very specific chakra that can be sealed inside a human body. Sounds a lot like a Biju. We probably could teach them some things about control and communication, to this guy and this Tengu."

"You think?" answers Naruto. "It's true, we should try. For now, I don't feel any negative emotions emanating from him. So this Tengu isn't a threat. It's probably the thing we have to defend from Katashiki."

Naruto stands up and turns around to leave.

"I'm going to my room with Hinata." he says. "We'll get deeper in the subject tomorrow."

"Bye! Good Night, Mister Uzumaki!" says Himari to Naruto as he's going.

"Mmh, I wanted to speak with him a bit too…" says Natsuri. "Never mind. What's up with Lord Tsubai? Why is he there on stand-by?"

"Nothing's wrong miss Yokawa." answers Shikamaru. "He's just going through some stuff currently and that's the reason we're talking with him. You'd better not get involved."

"… Ok, if you say it. I'll come back later then. If anyone needs anything, now or later, I'll be at the hostel's reception."

"No problem. Thank you!" says Choji as she leaves already.

"Must be great to be friend with Naruto Uzumaki every day." says Himari to Shikamaru and Choji.

"If you say so…" says Shikamaru. "On the contrary, it must be a drag to be friends with Tsubai Minamoto every day."

"Oh, he's usually normal. It's just now that things are weird. I'm just looking forward to when things will get back to normal and no white horned super human will be after him."

"Well, we'll do our best to make this happen quick." says Shikamaru as he stands up to go and pay for the meal.

Meanwhile, Tsubai is sitting, trying to find the source of the voice that just told him everything he repeated. Finally managing to see inside himself, he perceives nothing but emptiness. He searches for something or someone that could be the Tengu's real form. The same voice suddenly speaks to him again.

"It was about time. It took the previous Yamabushi only around 10 years to meet with their Tengu. But here you are, barely able to hear my voice after 20 years."

"What? 20 years? What do you mean? You're there since I was born?" wonders Tsubai.

"I'm just a part of you. A spirit brought to life by your family's curse." answers the voice.

"A part of me? Tell more! What do you know? How do I meet you? What should I do?"

"You already know everything you have to know. But judging by what has been happening to us lately, I'll have to tell more very soon."

"I'm not letting you leave. I need answers!"

"I can't and won't leave anyway." answers the voice before fading away for now.

Tsubai turns to Himari still with the same confused look on his face. She looks at him happy that he came back to his senses.

"So, what happened to you?"

"I have to go to the mansion right now. You can come to stay over if you want. My sister isn't there so you can have her room."

"Thanks but I'll just go home instead." she answers. "Also, miss Yokawa wanted to talk with you."

"Miss Yokawa? Cut it out with the politesse. She's only 21, you don't need to address her with that much respect. I'll see her tomorrow."

"Oh, don't worry. It didn't sound important."

"Still, just to chat, maybe. Right now I gotta go home. There's someone I have to speak with more."

"Wait?" shouts Himari to Tsubai who's leaving too. "There's really a voice in your mind?"

"I'll explain all this to you later, but I'm starting to see why my old man suddenly started to act differently."

"Mister Minamoto,…" says Shikamaru who just paid for the food they had, "I'll be at your mansion tomorrow morning. We'll continue this conversation. I know Naruto said he'll do it, but I'd prefer to have him do something different with you while I take the information gathering part."

"Ok, See ya then." answers Tsubai hurrying to leave for his mansion.

"Good Night Mister Nara! Good Night Mister Choji!" yells Himari before leaving with Tsubai.

Choji stands up and gives the empty plates back and then joins Shikamaru outside. Everyone goes back to their places after deciding to come together tomorrow again. Himari goes to her home, Shikamaru and Choji go back to their hostel room. Naruto already joined Hinata in their room, and Tsubai goes to his family's mansion. He simply heads to his father's office to spend the night trying to communicate more with the Tengu inside of him.

.

Many hours later, As everyone was finally having a calm and peaceful night, Shikamaru stands up early in the morning to go to the Minamoto mansion. He just wants to make sure he gets to talk with Tsubai today before Naruto does. When he arrives at the gate, nobody is there to open it.

"Do you need help?" asks Himari who stands behind him. Shikamaru turns around and looks at her with a surprised face.

"What are you doing, already awake so early in the middle of your winter break?" he asks.

"I don't have a job! I'm always on vacation. So I don't really need a break. The thing is simply put that I felt like Tsubai was struggling with something so I came to check on him."

.

"In the middle of the night? To check on a friend? Are these two really just friends?" thinks Shikamaru. Now that she's here, at least she'll may be able to help him get in.

"Nobody will open the gate." he says. "Do you know how to get in?"

"Yeah it's simple, you just have to use the keys." she says as she pulls keys out of a small pocket on her shirt.

Himari opens the door and gets in. Shikamaru follows and looks around to see that the mansion is totally empty. There's no maid or servant taking care of such a big place. He starts to wonder what kind of people this family is. A clan leading a village and having its own mansion don't have any one to keep the place safe and clean. This means either that they are humble or that they are extremely suspicious. He remembers Tsubai mentioned that his clan was founded by an ex Yamanaka clan member, and decides to ask Ino about the Minamoto clan when he gets back to Konoha. She probably knows about her lineage's story.

"TSUBAI!"

Shikamaru hears Himari upstairs and hurries to join her. There he finds her helping her friend up.

"Guys…" says Tsubai. "It's fine! I only fainted like a damn dumb ass trying to put an all nighter. But what I was trying to do is damn exhausting. I didn't realize that."

"What were you trying to do?" asks Himari. "Does it have something to do with the thing in your head."

"Yeah… I spent the whole night trying to speak with him but I couldn't even see his face once."

"Good morning." says Shikamaru. "That's what I wanted to talk about with you, Mister Minamoto, but if you need more sleep, I can still come back later."

"Oh no. It's fine." answers Tsubai while slapping his own face. "I'm there, we can talk."

"… Good… This place looks comfy but a bit too grandiose. How do you keep it good- looking by yourself?"

"I don't. My old-man has maids taking care of the thing for him. It's just that I asked them all to leave when I came yesterday. I just don't want all these people to be around, and don't really need them."

"He already has me!" says Himari.

"Not at all! You're my best friend. These girls are barely seen as people by him…"

Shikamaru is starting to see what kind of person Tsubai's father is. Riku Minamoto must be the kind of clan leader that acts and feels like a Daimyo. But these people always have a superiority complex or a real power that makes them above others. He needs to find out what it is for this man.

"Did it say anything you didn't know?" he asks to Tsubai about his tengu.

"He didn't say much. He's really acting like a damn teenage girl upset because senpai didn't notice her sooner."

"Seriously? What a drag… There's someone after the both of you. Being cooperative would be as much helpful for him than for us."

Tsubai turns to Himari and points his finger to his father's desk, before going on:

"I still said some things since yesterday at the restaurant, including one thing that tickled my mind. The black mist jar is gone."

"What's that?" asks Shikamaru.

"It's a jar with black mist leaking from it that's usually posed there on the desk. Himari, me or even my sister couldn't figure out what it is. Don't know why he noticed it missing, but it seems important to him."

"Curious… Could we go to a better place, so you can to tell more about what it said."

"I know!" says Himari. "We could go to the hostel's restaurant like yesterday. Nobody's working this early in the morning so they won't serve anything, but it's still open and there's a water fountain at least."

So, Shikamaru, Tsubai and Himari left the mansion for the restaurant. There Tsubai and Shikamaru spent hours discussing about the tengu and the Minamoto clan while Himari kept bringing water to the table even when not needed until the whole table is covered with plastic cups full of water.

At the end of the morning, the village had waken up. The restaurant opened, Natsuri opened the hostel's reception, and villagers and tourists are already crowding the beach as if nothing happened these last days and as if it wasn't another day of winter. Further from the crowded people, Naruto and Hinata are calmly walking down the beach, holding each other's hand.

"You know, you don't have to feel bad about what happened to me." says Hinata. "It's my own fault. Nobody asked for me to get involved, I just wanted to help."

"Don't think like that. You did your best. You saved Shikamaru and Tsubai. It's really my fault. I can make 2000 clones at once but can't be there for you when you need me. Plus it wasn't only you."

"I'm fine now! Sakura healed me. There's nothing wrong anymore. And you may be the strongest shinobi in the world right now, you can't be everywhere at once. It's natural to need help even for you. You can't expect to always help everyone."

"No… Sasuke's right about me. I could be way stronger than I am. And in our current situation, I need more power. Problem is I have no idea how to awake my own Six Paths abilities."

"You could try something else. You spoke about your 2000 clones earlier. What about getting better at this jutsu. You use it a lot but never tried to actually become better at it."

"… Hey you're right. I should probably work on making a better version of it. Guess I'll go back to training when we get home, even though I'll be busy with all the studying I need to become Jonin."

"What is that? Is lord Sixth making you study to take on the mantle of Hokage?"

"Yes. That's it. He and the council of Konoha think I can't simply become Hokage because I'm strong enough. Else, I would have been the sixth already."

"This knowledge and exercises could also help you become stronger."

"Yeah… You're right again. I'll do it and become stronger. From now on, I won't let anyone hurt you. And the next time one of this Katashiki's monsters show up, I swear I'll beat it up in seconds." Naruto says in a serious tone while holding Hinata's shoulder in front of him.

"It's good…" says Hinata blushing. "I feel safe with you, no matter what happens. I believe in you!"

The day passed and they spent it walking down the beach and stopped occasionally to check some stores near the beach. They were finally having the break every of their friend were trying to get them. Meanwhile, Shikamaru and Tsubai are still speaking together at the restaurant. They were joined by Choji and Natsuri and changed the subject of their discussion many times. But Shikamaru was satisfied. Tsubai told him everything he could about his father and his clan. He now thinks that Mister Riku Minamoto must have a tengu as well, and it must be the power that makes him so confident. But are all the tengus really as powerful as Tsubai's one? This seems and likely is impossible. If a clan that powerful was real and was descending from the Yamanaka clan, Konoha should know about it. And why would such a powerful clan step away from the shinobi history. Everyone was talking together at the table except Choji who was focused on eating.

"Well, I'll go out for a smoke a moment."

"Good move!" says Natsuri. "Smoking is forbidden inside the hostel and its surrounding buildings. But it is indeed authorized outside."

"I'm used to this kind of instructions, miss Yokawa. I never smoke when I'm inside."

"That's kind of you. And please call me Natsuri. We basically know each other now. Don't you think, Shikamaru?"

"Hey!" says Tsubai. "Even Himari always calls you Miss Yokawa and you never mentioned it. Why is it big brain guy can call you by your first name and she can't?"

"Could it be that you have a crush on mister Nara, miss Yokawa?" asks Himari.

"I'm already with someone." answers Shikamaru. "And unless there's a new great ninja war, this won't change."

"That was a quite romantic statement." says Himari. "Why didn't you bring miss Nara with you to this village?"

"Would have been a drag! She doesn't even live in the land of Fire,… yet. And she's not miss Nara… yet."

"You hear that, brownie?" says Tsubai to Natsuri. "You just got rejected."

"Mister Tsubai, I don't have a crush on this man at all. It's just that we're two people around the same age. Himari is only 17, that's why her calling me by my last name doesn't bother me. A sign of respect from a younger person is logic, but from a shinobi that's about my age, and who's also a clan leader… That's disturbing to me."

"Whatever." says Shikamaru. "I'll go for a smoke."

He goes alone for a small walk.

As he goes through the village, walking along the beach, he lights a cigarette and raises his head to the night sky. Suddenly, a weird black spiral form appears over the sea. This black spiral expands until it completely covers the sky. A deafening growl comes from inside the spiral, drawing all the villager's attention. A monster's head then gushes out of it. Choji runs to the place and joins Shikamaru who was alone on the beach. The monster pulls his enormous long body out of the portal. Tsubai, Natsuri and Himari also join Shikamaru's sides to see the beast expose its full body in front of the village. The gigantic portal closes, only letting the beast flying free above the sea. The five people still standing on the beach, all look, terrified, at the 500 meters long monster, raising his claws in the air as he flies over them. It turns his giant dog-like face and horned head to the ground as blue flames are leaking from between his gigantic fangs and his red rinnegans glow in the dark sky.
