Chapter 113: Chapter 113: A Sister, a Home
Chapter 113: A Sister, a Home
By the time the details were settled, it was already evening.
After bidding farewell to the others, Uchiha Kagami headed home.
As he approached the clan compound, a boy walked toward him.
...
Not hiding, but actually coming out to meet me?
Heh, Shisui, you must be feeling bold if you think I won't call you out for the Zoro incident.
But before Kagami could bring it up, Shisui quickened his pace and drew a short blade, swinging it at Kagami.
Clang!
Kagami caught the blade with one finger, his gaze falling on Shisui's three-tomoe Sharingan.
"I've told you before, don't overuse the Sharingan if your body can't keep up.
I hope you haven't been slacking on your taijutsu training during this time."
Without saying a word, Shisui slashed again, the short blade leaving afterimages.
Passing Uchiha clan members glanced at the scene and then went on their way, as if it were nothing unusual.
Noticing the anger in Shisui's strikes, Kagami frowned slightly.
You're almost ten, and yet you're this upset after I've been gone for just a short while?
You're too reliant on me, Shisui.
"You jerk of a brother!!"
Shisui shouted, breaking his silence.
"I'm still in the Academy! It's bad enough that you assigned me to look after a girl, but now you've dumped Sasuke on me too!"
"Do you even know how exhausting these past few months have been for me?"
"Idiot! Bastard! Irresponsible, evil black-haired natural wavy-head!"
...
Kagami caught the blade between two fingers, finally recalling what he had arranged before leaving.
Thud.
He sent Shisui flying with a single kick and continued toward the house, unfazed.
"Natural wavy hair doesn't mean you're bad. Besides, you've got a bit of a wave yourself.
Anyway, why all the anger at your age? Didn't I leave you some money?
Couldn't you hire someone to take care of Sasuke?"
Shisui climbed back to his feet, brushed the dirt off his pants, and naturally fell into step beside Kagami.
"I wouldn't trust anyone else to look after him.
Sasuke is so adorable…"
"What about the girl, Ryūzetsu? How are you two getting along?"
Shisui was silent for a moment.
"She seems to have been through something painful. She doesn't talk much.
I tried to arrange for her to attend the Academy, but she refused."
Thwack!
Shisui rubbed his head in pain.
"What was that for?"
"Since when do you have the authority to enroll someone in the Academy?"
Rustle.
Shisui pulled a badge out from his pocket.
"I'm the Student Council President, of course I have that authority!
Honestly, you really don't know anything, dumb brother."
Student Council? The Academy has that now?
Kagami took the badge and examined it.
Previously, the Hokage had always served as the Academy's principal.
But with his expanded responsibilities, Minato no longer had the time.
Given the Academy's importance, it needed a trusted leader.
After some discussion, Minato had summoned Shinka back from Kyoto to take over as principal, leaving Kyoto under the care of a few Jōnin.
As the former head of the Uchiha radicals, Shinka was well-suited for the job.
His teaching methods were, admittedly, a bit intense.
The Academy now had a ranking system. Each semester, a tournament determined the rankings.
The top-ranked student became Student Council President, and the next four students joined the council.
These positions came with certain ninja privileges.
Consistently ranking first for three consecutive terms would even grant the privileges of a special Jōnin.
Since entering the Academy, Shisui had been undefeated from the first to sixth years, holding the presidency seven times in a row.
In the Academy, he had unrivaled authority.
Even when he went to the restroom, a dozen or more classmates followed him.
Handing the badge back, Kagami began to ponder.
Shisui's combat ability was already at Jōnin level, but he lacked real combat experience and battlefield instincts.
In the original timeline, he completed his transformation during the Third Ninja War.
Now, there was no suitable battlefield.
Kagami himself had developed many skills through battle, but such experience couldn't be taught through words alone.
Sending him against the Akatsuki would be pointless—it would only lead to unnecessary deaths.
Training him personally would still leave Shisui subconsciously aware that he wasn't in real danger…
Perhaps a small-scale war could provide the training he needed?
With a plan forming in his mind, Kagami and Shisui reached the house.
In the courtyard, Ryūzetsu held little Sasuke, gazing absently at the garden's flowing stream.
"Ryūzetsu, let's have dinner out tonight. My brother will treat us."
Shisui approached her naturally, while Kagami, for some reason, was reminded of an old saying:
"A younger sister, a house, and no parents."
And this kid even had an older brother giving him spending money…
How annoying.
...
Ryūzetsu came out of her thoughts and, still holding Sasuke, gave a small bow.
"Welcome back, Lord Kagami."
Only after spending some time in Konoha had she realized just what kind of person she had encountered.
The man who had driven out or killed all the malevolent forces in the Land of Fire,
the man who had kept rogue ninja from setting foot in the land,
the man who single-handedly held the Four Great Nations in check.
The Land of Fire's strongest shinobi.
The leader of the most powerful clan in the ninja world.
Had it not been for the months she'd had to adjust, she wouldn't have been able to maintain her composure.
"Are you settling in well? Shisui hasn't been bothering you, has he?"
Ryūzetsu shook her head.
Her white hair brushed against Sasuke's sleeping face, causing the baby to wave his little hand in response.
"Shisui has been very kind to me."
"Good. Anything you'd like to eat? Consider it a formal welcome dinner."
Ryūzetsu hesitated. If she said "whatever," she'd just be passing the decision back to Kagami, which didn't seem polite.
"I'd like Ichiraku Ramen, if that's alright."
...
I just ate that.
"Sure. Take your time getting ready; Shisui and I will wait at the door."
While they waited at the entrance, Shisui hesitated, then finally spoke up.
"Brother…"
"I know. You're thinking about Uchiha Itachi, aren't you?"
Kagami's voice was calm.
"That's my decision. If you want to change it, you'll have to defeat me."
Shisui took a deep breath.
"And what about Sasuke when he grows up? Are you planning to adopt him, to have his father and brother nearby but unable to live freely?"
"What will Sasuke think…"
Kagami chuckled softly.
"What he thinks doesn't matter. As I said before, if you want things your way, then surpass me.
I'm the strongest now, so everything goes according to my will."
"Shisui, remember this:
'Doing as you please is the privilege of the strong.'"
"You're my brother. I won't interfere with any of your choices, but don't stop getting stronger."
Kagami gently ruffled Shisui's hair, his voice soft.
"Grandmother is gone. You're the most important person to me.
I don't want you to ever feel powerless.
If there's something you want to protect, it starts with your own strength.
If I'm gone someday, you'll have only yourself to rely on."
...
Shisui brushed Kagami's hand away, pouting.
"Liar.
You're never going to die."
